Mine was two double spaced pages. Don't write your life story, but write enough to be a comprehensive yet concise explanation of why you want to become a doctor and why you'd be a GOOD doctor.

Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it.

Hey, Terrance, what are you doing here?

I've been here for a while lol

I forgot to talk to you about this while I was still at NU

I'm home now!

Completely agree with neom3x11.

Keep in mind the qualities that make one a good physician:

(1) Care for others (discuss your service experience)
(2) Eagerness to learn (whatever you learn today in medical school will become obsolete someday; you must demonstrate the ability and desire to learn new things quickly and independently)
(3) Honesty
(4) Friendliness (doctors are not nerds.)
(5) Appreciation for art/humanity (find some ways to show that).
(6) Respect for scientific facts
(7) Reasonable deference to authority ("reasonable" )

Lastly, from Steven Jobs, "Stay Hungry, stay foolish". (Pretty much sums up what you need to be)

goconway, I was wondering if you would be willing to read my essay and answer a few questions I have about the program.

My email is vrchauhan2@yahoo.com, contact me at your earliest convience

Thank you very much for your assistance

do HPME adcoms read the regular app I send to Northwestern?

no they don't

if we want them to see certain letters of rec, can we send it to the hpme office along w/ our hpme app?

so...anybody who wants help can directly IM me at neom3x11

haha, how about some physics help?

haha hey buddy

physics can take a pole and shove it...

^LOL so true :D :D

on a totally different note.....anyone know how a 690 in SATII Chemistry looks to hpme adcoms??? bad?? or acceptable??...they seem to have a thing for that test (and i mean that in the most positive sense possible...:D)...so its worrying me......

might be better to keep studying and try to raise that score...

why does HPME want a English teacher recommendation and not, like, a science/math teacher's? To see if you're well-rounded?

doctors have to write well too, don't they?

also, HPME kids only have to take one freshman seminar instead of two. they're writing-intensive courses that, as the name suggests, you take during your freshman year. with one less writing-intensive course, you gotta come in as a pretty strong writer already.

My school sends transcripts in a packet along with teacher recs, counselor recs, etc. Should I ask them to only include certain things in the packet for the HPME, i.e. secondary school report, teacher rec and any relevant recs?

Also, would sending more than the required english teacher rec be bad?

just do what they tell you to, I don't remember what they require but that's all I sent and it sure didn't hurt me.

since I'm not an adcom I couldn't tell you for sure. Sending one add't recommendation isn't gonna be bad, just don't send them too much extra stuff

Send in whatever you feel will help give the college the best and most complete idea of who you ARE

I sent in an extra rec and it certainly didn't hurt me as well

Just make sure that when you're done this whole process you won't have regrets in the back of your mind of "what if i sent this, or what if i did that"

After all, you only get one shot to apply :)
