if all of those schools require 3 SAT IIs, then I would definitely take a third one and keep your options open. I wouldn't stress too much about getting a 750+. Just study as much as you can, and I'm sure you'll do great. I would only consider not taking the test if you consistently score below 700 on practice exams.

What do you think my chances are of getting into Northwestern's HPME with the following scores:
SAT 1 writing 700 math 780 verbal 740 SAT II Chem, Math and Lit 740 each

OK- I'm sick of these chances post. Galwain440: your scores are fine! No one here is on the admissions committee, our opinion on your chances should hold no weight whatsoever.

Do you want to be a physician? Do you have a passion to help others? If yes, then HPME is an amazing program and you should definitely apply, regardless of your stats. If they think your stats are not up to par, they won't even send you the application (you first send in a card with stats).

If you're sick of those chances posts, don't reply to them. I don't.

do sat/sat II scores play a big part in HPME program....my scores a rly horrible but im 1% in a rl compettive high school and god ecs and stuff but the only downside are my scores...what do you guys think?

and also can i submitt my act scores rather then mysat scores..??

thanks for any replies

The first part of the screening process relies entirely on numerical stats, i.e. SAT/ACT scores, GPA, etc. Therefore, unfortunately, scores do play a big part of the program. But yes, ACT scores are accepted in place of SAT.

hey guys, i sort of have a problem here.
the thing is, i know you have to have a chem sat II but after my sophmore year chem the teacher said we weren't prepared for it until we took chem AP, which i'm taking next year, my senior year. so should i risk taking the SATII early in the year with more than a year since i've taken a chem course and 2 months or so into chem AP? is it possible at all to still get considered without chem?
also i should probably retake a 720 on math IIC right?

First of all, I wasn't accepted to HPME, so take this advice with a grain of salt...

I was in the exact same situation last year -- I'd finished the advanced Chem sophomore level course, but by the end of Junior year I hadn't remembered much and needed to take the Chem SAT 2. I was starting AP Chem, so I had regained some basic knowledge, so I wrote the test in October, and scored a 690. Not astoundingly horrible, considering how much preparation I had, but not too great, considering the competition.

Well, NU/HPME says the last score accepted is the December test, so I started preparing (all the while being in AP Chem, of course). I took advantage of a most important resource -- my AP Chem teacher. I asked if we could sit down about once a week and review the rest of the year, if at the very least on a superficial level, because almost all of AP Chem is covered at some point on the SAT 2. This helped tremendously, especially for equilibrium, which is a pretty big topic on the test and in Chem, and we wouldn't have covered it until 3rd quarter. I was able to raise my score 60 points, to a 750.

Pretty respectable, I'd say -- at least, not too bad. Still didn't get in. Hopefully you (will) have an AP Chem teacher who's as helpful and easy to approach as mine was, and good luck.

yeah thanks that helps a lot
at this point i'd be happy with anything over a 700...

just do lots of practice and most importantly, TRUST yourself when taking the test. that can play a huge role on how well you do.

i just found out that my GPA dropped to a 4.0 weighted 3.6 unweighted and i'm no longer in the top 10%. does this mean i have no shot whatsoever with just ok sats (2100)?

honestly, i doubt that you can get in to one of the ba/md schools due to your academics. but you never know- do lots of ec's and show them you want to be a doctor. but as of now, i don't think so. sry.

is everyone doing the common app online for hpme's undergrad and then mailing in the request card?

I was wondering about an SAT I score of 2200, SAT IIs 760, 790, 790 on chem, bio, and math, respectively...will that be enough to get into HPME?

that is not enough to get you in... but it CERTAINLY won't keep you out of hpme... most of the applicants to hpme have similar scores... the difference bettween the kids who get applications, the ones who get interviews, and the ones who eventually get in is: test scores will get you an application, other achievements and a very very strong interest in medicine (displayed by extracurriculars) will get you an interview, and a nice personality will get you into the program if you make it to an interview...

those scores are great and i got into hpme with similar scores ACT 35, SATii 790, 790, 730... math, chem, physics respectively... (i sent in bio as well which was a 720)... but scores will only show you are a good test taker and they look for much much more... i wish you the best in your college application process 892JCello...

umm also forgot to add that the essay is essential in getting an interview. At this point the essay is the only thing your really have control over, so make it GREAT. If your essay piques their interest and is backed by good test scores, you'll definitely get an interview.

ok thanks for the advice people

i'm taking sat I again anyways, and i do have ecs, but just don't feel like posting them

alright well. i've gone back and read up to pg 35 of these forums and they were amazing, i've gotten some great tips, and a page full of notes and to-dos for my junior year. but the thing is, after that i skipped ahead (a year or so) and now i'm curious as to whether there is anyone still around on this thread that knows a lot about HPME (as in, someone that would have the answers to those panic filled questions, tips for how/when to do things). just curious, because literally within minutes of knowing about HPME, i made it my focus to do everything possible to stand apart and get in (yeah, i know, you've all heard it before) and if there was someone who had been there, done that, it would make me feel a bit less like the world was on my shoulders.

with that said, i was also wondering if anyone had suggestions as to programs similar to HPME, so that if i didn't get into what has now become my dream program, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

thanks!!!!

also, how much impact does the psat have?

unless u'r nat merit......none
