Northwestern HPME Part 1

Any incoming HPME freshmen still reading this? I have a Linear Algebra math book and a Social Psych book I'm willing to sell (for much cheaper than Norris's prices) so if you want a book, just PM me. I believe MENU math (291-1) and regular linear algebra all use the same book. Social Psych is probably not until second quarter, but if you plan on being a psych major, social psych is a relatively easy and enjoyable class to take!!

For the application process, do you send in the HPME card by December 1st and then your application by Jan 1st, or do they both have to be in by Dec 1st?

Don't you need to send in your card first to GET an HPME application? So the earlier the better.

how important is SAT subject tests compared to SAT reasoning? i did horrible on the verbal part of SAT reasoning, but i think i will do good on SAT subject tests (oct 14)

"Don't you need to send in your card first to GET an HPME application? So the earlier the better"

card?

the request card, it's the only way you get the application for HPME(if you are selected from the 1000+ people who request it)

does anyone know how many people actually get request, get the application for HPME, how many accepted for interviews, and how many are actually accepted?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe in my year it was roughly 1000 got the application, 150-200 got interviews, and 50-60 got accepted. The actual class sizes are getting smaller, but it was 46 my year and around 40 this year.

sounds about right.

I don't remember exactly the adcom told me when he did a presentation over here, but I think about 1/2 that request the application get one.

Btw, I have a question: once you get the app, are test scores no longer what is used to evaluate applicants? Put another way, are the test scores simply used as a cut off?

I'm curious because while my SAT and 2 of my SAT IIs are good, my math SAT IIC is only in the upper 600s

Test scores are used as the initial cutoff, but they are still further used to evaluate applicants. Everything is a piece of the puzzle: your test scores, gpa, essays, ECs, and if you get there, your interview. If you can, try to retake Math IIC to get a better score.

hey for the hpme card, if ur putting down ur ACT scores, for the writing section, what do u put: the combined writing/english score (1-36) or the essay score (2-12)?

o yea and on the hpme card, for the blue box on the bottom right-hand corner of the card (the part that says "for more information"), do u fill it out, cuz it asks "Name and email address"?

What kind of ECs do you need? Do you stand no chance if you have no med ECs whatsoever?

question about that HPME application request card:

It asks for highest GPA possible, and our school uses a weighted scale (in APs, an A=5.0) so technically the highest GPA possible is 5.0 if someone took APs for every class...so what do I put for that? Or maybe it's the weighted GPA of whoever is ranked 1st?

Anyway, if anyone knows the answer to this I'd appreciate it because I'm a tad confused.

well, basically it is the highest possible GPA. In my school, one has to take a health class mandatory and therefore the highest possible GPA(if all other classes are AP or honors) would be like a 4.97 and thats what I wrote in the card

you put the highest possible regardless of required classes.

Really? Because when I called the office this summer, they told me to use the highest GPA from my class as the highest "attainable" GPA. Can anyone else call and verify/dispute this?

Hey I already received the app

already received the med program app???

when did you send in the card?
