hey everyone! i'm a high school senior very interested in the HPME. i know that the program used to require SAT II writing, but since they don't anymore, how important is the writing section in SAT reasoning? i got a good score first time taking the SAT (800-Verbal, 780-Math), but my writing section was only 680. Do i need to retake the test? many schools only ask the writing score for survey purposes. would HPME consider the score an important factor?

ya i sent in the card like a month and a half ago and received the app pretty quickly

Care to share the format of the app and its prompts?

(Though I'm sure that one of them will ask "why do you want to be a doctor", lol. I'm just curious about how the app is set up)

Will a 630 in CR, even with excellent GPA, class rank, and scores on Math and Writing, completely kill my chances of getting an application?

I'm not sure if it'll completely kill you, but it sure won't help you. You should retake it only if you know you'll do better, and won't screw up your good math and writing scores.

Hey will a suspension for theft of school property hurt someone's chances of getting into HPME?

Will it hurt you? Yes.

chillaxin...my best friend is applying and when we went to go visit the campus...that's the box she had a question on....admissions lady said it needs to be the highest possible...so if you're on a 4.0 then put 4.0....you know? Highest attainable GPA has a lot of errors when students calc it...there are so many routes to get a GPA...that it screws it up...

acemaster33: after about how many weeks after u sent in ur card did u receive ur app?

o yea, and if we didn't know the school's highest gpa when we sent in our card ( i found out my school's highest gpa yesterday) and put nothing or N/A for that, will they just throw away the card as incomplete?

sakura_girl: 680 writing is fine, especially considering your 800 verbal.
vp989: I agree with Don's advice.
Don: yes. Make sure you are honest about it and give them a good explanation when they ask. They really look for maturity, and stealing school property doesn't sound very mature. But it is funny- care to share the story?
892JCello: putting N/A or nothing is fine, if you're really worried you can contact them. I hadn't taken all of my SAT IIs when I filled out the card so those were blank.

hope that helped

892JCello, I received my application, if i recall correctly, about 2-3 weeks after I sent in my card, the overall application is nothing fancy, just some basic info forms like other colleges with your extracurriculars, community service, honors and awards, then the essay is a 1000 word "personal history" including your experiences and reasons for wanting to be a doctor and stuff like that. And also 892JCello I think if you put your GPA down without a maximum and your other stats such as test scores were good enough, I'm sure its no big deal. With the info cards I think they are just trying to weed out the kids who they know really won't have a shot, but they aren't super selective for just sending the apps out so you should be fine. How long ago did you send yours?

like 2 weeks ago...lol, my stats suck tho so i don't think i'm getting it

thnx ppl (10 chars)

how much do senior year grades count for hpme?

I got the HPME app today after sending in my card about a week and a half ago.

Whoop, whoop. :)

This is a small, but substantial, victory for me. :)

So anyone send in their HPME app yet?

I'm a wee bit stuck on the essay...I'm not sure what they mean by "personal history" at the beginning of the prompt. Do they want a personal history that encompasses more than just why I want to be a doctor? ie hobbies, etc?

yes. spend 2/3 of the time talking about your medically-related hobbies and why you want to become a doctor, and sneak in 1/3 about your other activities and how they've shaped you as well.

well I have 1/2 about why I want to be a doctor (which kinda includes personal history), 1/4 medically-realted hobbies, and 1/4 why hpme. does that seem good?
