unfortunately it apparently is not that unusual for schools not to notify students if they dont move forward or get accepted for awards/programs etc. i know tulane doesnt notify you if you dont receive the “box project” Deans HOnors award, and looks like the one at another school my son applied for doesnt also, …over the years have read on different boards that people were only notified if they won. I know with all the applicants it would be a big job to notify everyone, but i wish schools would remember the work, effort, hopes and dreams of students that apply for these, and just send a nice short note recognizing their efforts and giving the denial decision…jmo.

^

I thought that, too.

Afterall, some of the applicants may have also applied ED or EA to a fav school and may have firmly decided to go there.

Seriously though. I can’t imagine WHY they wouldn’t just send a quick rejection email…i mean…is it that difficult to do a mass email? I feel for everybody waiting for results…waiting is way worse than knowing sometimes

SRO2007-I hope you are right!!! Bama is officially tied as my number one school. I hope this means they really want me…I was reading UFE profiles on their website and WOW…those kids are incredible

a heads up note on cbh… the ufe notification came in sons reg email but …when he applied for cbhp it said that notification would only go to crimson email … i have jotted down on my notes that they notify end of january, so no one worry about that one yet

I’m still curious how many semi finalists they picked…Like did they pick 150? 80?

okay! thanks everyone! that makes sense. private school for me then for certain. i had a feeling my essay wasn’t that good for this. guess i was right. :\ i think i’ll have other scholarship opportunities elsewhere though.

good luck all you semifinalists!

When you said… “It is quite possible to have a better experience being part of a different program rather than UFE and/or CBHP”

Can you tell us anything about other programs within UA that may be along the same lines as UFE? Looking for something that will develop leadership, brainstorming/problem solving in relation to community service.

^^^

Off the top of my head…

Honors Connection as a Peer Mentor

Leadership UA

There’s some kind of Ambassadors (don’t remember the exact name)

hopefully others will chime in with others…

D is in the emerging scholar program:

This program involves first-year students in research and creative activities with University faculty.

She also did the Alabama Action program the week before school started. Loved it. Is in a premed club that always has service opportunities as well as the UA Honors program.

I believe the UA honors took kids on a service project this weekend. They also have service programs over spring break.

There is also the Blount Program, you can find out about that on the housing web page…
It seemed really cool but D opted for the other program!!

Best of luck! It really is what you make of it!!

Alabama Action and Outdoor Action are two programs that I forgot to mention.

Omama tells about AA above. Perhaps someone can say more about OA.

The honors college has a lot of programs like those mentioned above. The Alabama Action program is expanding to breaks and is even planning on going to Costa Rica for a service project this summer. The individual colleges often have student ambassadors and the tour guides you see are university-wide ambassadors under direction of President Witt. I don’t know if many OOS students get nominated as they are looking for people who will affect the state of Alabama in the long run, but there is also the Blackburn Institute.

UFE and CBHP are on the more unique side in that they accept students who are not yet current UA students. I have never heard of them accepting a rising sophomore or something like that. Some people don’t bloom until they get into college and that’s where the other programs come in. If a student has an idea for a service project, the Honors College will consider it. Stephen Black is kind of the coordinator for that and undergrad research. When he spoke at Alabama Action, he mentioned that if a student has a strong interest in a specific topic, chances are there is a faculty member who has the same interest.

Pramirez184 has done Outdoor Action and to my knowledge, would really recommend it. I’m not the type of person who would choose to participate in that type of program, but I really liked Alabama Action.

My son also did Alabama Action, and he just loved. So much so that he will be doing Alabama Action: Costa Rica, putting his love of Spanish as well as his enjoyment of working with kids in a school setting together.

There are other programs including Freshmen Forum and First Year Council (SGA) that offer leadership opportunities. You can join the student publications or radio station. You can be a member of your particular dorm’s council. Various organizations (for example, Circle K) do a lot of volunteer work, and during spring break, there are projects that can take you to Chicago or New Orleans.

Hope this helps.

Tell us more about Chicago during Spring Break.

Here’s a link to the community service office:

The UA calendar features this entry…

Alternative Spring Break 2010 (Domestic trip) (Community Service Center)
A week long service oriented trip working with Chicago Parks Commission, mentoring, children’s art projects, and working with homeless shelters.
@ Chicago, Ill | March 14, 2010 - 08:00 am

Is it possible that there are currently two separate groups for UFE? They already have a firm group of finalists, based on all app info submitted, lets say halve of the total they will inviteto campus, as an example. And the group that has received semi-finalist phone interview requests, are kids that are very “close” to being finalist but there are just to many of them to invite so they have to pare them down somehow - phone interview.

^^^

That’s possible. They might not bother with a phone interview with kids that they know that they are inviting for an interview. That’s possible.

FYI…CBH doesn’t do phone interviews. (Or at least it hasn’t in the past.)

maybe. i’m not getting my hopes up though.

unless i hear word, i will focus on other scholarship opportunities.

I doubt they’d do two groups…the email implied that everyone had to go through the semifinalist stage

^yup. doubt it too.

Tres-you’re actually the only one who makes me think they’d do two groups…i mean…your stats are fantastic…i can’t see how they wouldn’t pick you
