im a current freshman about to end my first year in a couple of months and im thinking about applying to nyu for spring 2009 as a sophomore. i’ve got a lot of thinking to do over the summer to figure out if this is really what i want to do. but first, i have a question: i was accepted into nyu last year for their class of 2011, but obviously turned them down. what do you guys think about my chances as a transfer student being that i’ve previously been accepted? will it harm/help my chances?

It will not hurt unless you had a poor reason to explain why you did not go. If you do not go to college in NYC but live in NYC, say you want to get out of NYC and experience the wonders of not living at home. Then you miss your family and found the NYU has a better fit for your career goals. Considering you got in before, you have great high school stats. However, what are your stats in college? If it is not downward curve GPA then it’s fine. A little downward is okay but not too much.

(sorry I don’t really know how to do quotes, so this will be rather rudimentary)

“DollyHaze: I know for freshman admission it is 50/50 academics and artistic review. However, it is to my understanding that for transfers the individual schools handle all the applications, so that ratio might be different. I know it is very competitive, but that shouldn’t discourage you from applying if it is what you want. Note: If you are still considering it, I would make up your mind quickly. There are a limited number of audition times left in late March. You want to give yourself enough time to prepare for the audition, good luck!”

Thanks for the info. I’m applying to the film school, and from what I understand there is no audition required for that, just an artistic portfolio. I could be wrong about this though, because it is somewhat of a last minute decision to apply to NYU (I was unhappy with being an English major at my current institution, and so I decided to take the semester off to go over other possible options). Anyway, here are some quick stats for the record:

College GPA: 3.0 (this might seem low, but I go to a school that is known for its rigorous academics and harsh grading system). I was an English major/Japanese minor; I took some film classes, but they were generally more geared towards film theory.
High School GPA: Um, something like a 3.6? I also attended an arts magnate school for film which I think might help. I also completed an independent study through my high school gifted program in which I made a series of short films.
SATs: 760V/650M/770W; SATII: 800 for Literature, 740 for Latin

I did a ton of activities in high school and won awards and stuff (including some for film), but my college resume is rather weak which I will really hurt me. My school work and part-time job took up so much time that it was hard to find time for other activities.

Oh, and my grandfather is an NYU alum, but I don’t know if this means anything.

They consider NYU alumni but only if you’re on the border in competition with someone else similar stats to you.

Your high school stats are great.

I think your college GPA will have a negative effect on gaining admission unless your professor writes how tough he or she is and that you’re one of the top students in his or her course. However, Tisch is believed to look less on GPA but they still cannot be taken with a grain of salt since they are the hardest to get in.

I am sure your lack of activities in college is understandable if your work hours are quite long. You can list your work hours on the application. Also, if you working to take care of family and/or pay for college, I am sure they will understand.

bump…

does anyone who got accepted last year mind posting stats? im kind of curious to see how mine fare against those of last year, even though obviously it will differ from year to year. (I’m applying to CAS)

I am transferring to Gallatin
Stats
2.86 H.S GPA
29 ACT
University of Rochester
3.91 First semester GPA (3 A’s 1 A-)

I am working on my application essays as I write this.
I hope that NYU overlooks my High school GPA.

Good luck to everyone applying, I hope we all get in.

I can’t wait to get this application done and over with.

I just noticed that on the teacher recommendation form NYU misspelled “genuinely”. They spelled it “geniunely”. Haha do i get bonus points for catching their mistakes.

I’m supposed to apply but I have no idea what I’m supposed to write my essay on. No Clue. I don’t really want to apply. The only reason I’d apply is because of Stern.

Dont think ill get in, but im sending in my app online sometime tomorrow

and i sent my resume on mail this morning, so they should have it by monday

I have a question.

Since the deadline is on tuesday

I plan on handing the APP online on Saturday before.

DOes NYU need to have the COMPLETE app by tuesday?

Or is it okay to have a few things missing by that date? Because Im not sure if my college and highschool can send in my official transcript at that time

When I asked NYU told me that your application needs to be in April 1st, but that they understand if the other components of the application are not finished.

I don’t really want to go to NYU either. It’s just close to home and in case I don’t get in anywhere else… I was admitted as a transfer student before but strangely got a rejection email a few days ago, and that email was of course for freshmen applicants. I’m so confused because I haven’t even applied as a freshman nor have I already applied as a transfer student this year. I was planning but now I’ll have to reconsider..

i still need to start my NYU essays :(

I just started them yesterday :x

According to the NYU Forum, they don’t really check transfer applications until April 1st. However, you should get them in BEFORE April 1st. I am not sure they meant April 1st is the last day to submit it or the day before it. They give you a receipt on EMBARK after your application is submitted.

alpharosean, why did you apply for NYU if you did not want to go there. No offense but you might have taken someone else’s spot. But then again, that other guy is probably not that good.

Yeah, I know. Sorry, but as I said, I was going to apply just as a safety measure… and it’s close and not so bad in terms of ranking. I did apply at the last minute last year only to experience what it’s like. Harvard’s already announced something I hadn’t even expected to hear the other day, so I have to expect the worst… I really can’t waste my time any longer
I’m also considering going to a university in Europe.

i just finished by essay, now im working on my short answers. ill submit it online today
