My very first post here but I have been following the threads to gather info on the college application process on behalf of DS. I really love the kid and think he is great (as a person) and as an outstanding, well-rounded student.

However, the Yale SCEA application result was a downer. Made us think DS would not get in anywhere. Well, fortunately, he got first into his safety school, Hunter College of NY (by way of the initial application into the CUNY Macaulay Honors College; dk yet about The Macaulay Honors College outcome).

Well, lo and behold, unexpectedly, DS received a regular snail mail envelope (UPS or FEDEX) notifying him of his admission to NYU CAS. Additionally, he has been admitted as one of approx. 35? students into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars program. This comes with $25,000 scholarship award annually for 4 years of undergrad study at NYU. There are also other perks that come with this offer.

Scholars Weekend is March 27 and March 28, 2010.

So happy for DS who has worked tremendously hard in the service of the community, as well as in academic work!

wow Congratzzz!! =] I’m glad that some people already received acceptance letter today! =] but I’m not glad that I haven’t received anything yet =[ but anyway congratzz!

Thanks for your congrats. I will pass them onto sonny who is now in rehearsal working hard, as usual.

This was one of the main reasons for posting, to alert people that scholarship recipients are being notified as of right now.

Ponce and Shin, I wish you the best; I wish that these awards could be multiplied and spread out to the masses! So many deserving students, not just my son. Though he genuinely stands for what the award is about - community and social justice.

I also received a scholarship letter today! However, instead of Martin Luther King, I got DEANs (Diversity in Experience and Academics at New York University).

It says it includes a full tuition scholarship for the College of Arts and Science, renewable annually for four years! Also, the letter says that I’m a member of the Presidential Honors Scholars program, which includes funded international study trips to NYU’s sites abroad.

This is really good news - I’m hoping that the rest of the month is just as good.

GPA: 4.0 unweighted, school doesn’t weight or rank
SAT I: Best Sitting 2380 (800 CR, 800 M, 780 W) - Superscored 2400 (I took the test twice)
SAT II: 800 on World History, Math 2, Biology
AP’s: 5 on World History, US History, Biology, Statistics - currently taking French, Euro, and Calc BC
Hook: None really. White male in an overrepresented region.

I’m not going to post my activities or essay topics yet (I’ll wait until I have all of my decisions), but I’ve been very involved with music and community service. I also believe that my essay captured something about me that’s unique. Getting such recognition from NYU is exciting, so I’m hoping that other colleges will see the same thing.

I doubt that scores play a major role in earning this scholarship - it would be nice to believe that this offer was primarily based on other factors.

how exciting!!
is nyu your first choice?!
i bet getting the scholarship is based on many factors… scores, extra curriculars, community involvement, just being an overall unique candidate! congrats!

I don’t really have a first choice. I’m just waiting to see who says yes, and then I’ll decide. This definitely makes me feel more strongly about NYU, as I wasn’t really expecting anything like this.
