Well I'm from South Texas and I go to a public school...
My GPA is a 3.8/4.0

ACT 28
SAT 2100
Spanish Language (5)
Spanish Literature (3)
Biology (3)
Chemistry (3)
English Literature (3)
English Language (3)
Environmental Science (4)
I have an associates in Biology since I took Dual Credit classes during high school. I am a junior (11th). I am graduating as a dual language student. I am in the National Honors Society. My junior year course load was Physics AP, Biology AP, Chemistry AP, English Literature AP. I am in sports.

Great chances! You should be good for basically any of their schools, but Stern is typically harder. What school do you plan on applying to?

people in my countries who are getting 80s are all getting higher SAT and ACT scores. Damn American high school give grade too easily.

You have zero ECs for business related or zero business courses , so i don’t think Stern would be a good choice.

^^^

The US doesn’t give grades too easily, we simply have a different grading scale to some places. For example, in the UK an A is 70% or higher, but in the US it’s a 90-94%. For us failing is 50% or lower, whereas in the UK it’s 40% or lower.

Additionally, SAT and ACT are not a good way to a good way to compare grades.

@OP

You have excellent chances for NYU, Stern or CAS.

Based on grades and scores, you have a good shot at CAS. What do you want to study?

Im guessing youre NOT applying to tisch, right?
NYU is really hard to predict.
My friends cousin with about an 89 avg (most schools in nyc dont use gpa) took one ap her entire senior year (ap micro or macro I forget) and got into nyu hotel management with only a 3000 a year, which at nyu is barely anything.
(She comes from bronx science, a SUPER COMPETITIVE AND WELL KNOWN SCHOOL, so that may or may not have helped.
Sat ~1900
Thats all I know.

For the chancing:
Your gpa is really good but your ap scores could use a lot of work.
Good luck!

As far as people saying your AP scores could use work- youre graduating as a dual language student, and based off your Spanish AP score, I’m guessing Spanish is your first language, right? (or, at least, you learned both at the same time) which it very important to note, because the US education system jackNYU2018 talked about does not favor students who are bilingual- meaning that the schools will take into account that the things like AP English Lit/Lang were probably much harder coarse material for you than other students—just a guess

Well first of all, the grades I earned were difficult to get, they didn’t just give them to me. And yes, my first language is Spanish. I am a the first from my family to go to college and my two recommendation letters that I will be using are great! I also have a lot of extracurriculars such as UIL Mathematics, UIL Science, NHS, Varsity Soccer since freshman year, PASF, etc. I am planning on applying to CAS but I have also heard that you can apply to an easier one and still major in whatever you want–I’m not sure how true that is? But I wanna major in Biology or Chemistry or maybe both–Biochemistry…

I was told that major choosing doesnt matter that much.
Its more of the school you are applying to.

And OP i think we got off on a wrong foot, me and my friends who wanted to go to U.S are just being hammered by the ontario school level system here in Canada.

Though @NYU2013 is most likely right, I still reserve my opinion off the fact you should have some business courses and ecs to apply for business school.

And CAS is for sure a great choice. You should apply for ED1 but understand the financial obligations of it. Good luck. I am applying to Stern ED1 though most likely I wont get in.

@jackNYU2018 there are no financial obligations brought about by applying EDI.

Students who apply EDI and RD are supposed to receive the same amount of FA, all things being equal. (Whether this is true in practice is not entirely clear).

Additionally, students who are accepted EDI but cannot afford to attend are allowed to back out of their agreement. The Early Decision ‘Contract’ is not actionable per se.

While it is good to have business-related ECs for Stern, it’s not required. Unlike the UK application system, US Universities are looking for ‘well-rounded’ students who demonstrate ability to succeed in many area; the UK is looking for more targeted students with related ECs, classwork, etc.

My parents make less than 12,000 a year so I think I would be offered a good financial aid package…

Hi. I got into NYU for the class of 2017 :)

I had a 3.86/4.0,

tons of really impressive (not bragging, just putting it out there) art awards/extracurricular activities,

and I did the IB program, etc. etc.

I’d recommend not sending your ACT score, and sending your SAT score instead. Your SAT is far more impressive, and your ACT score will get you considered, but likely rejected. A girl from my high school class got a 34 on her ACT and got wait-listed, then rejected. Another girl got a 33, got rejected, and another girl got a 32 and got rejected.

NYU cares a hell of a lot about your grades, essays, and extracurricular activities. They care a lot about your scores too, but if you have high scores and don’t have the grades or essays to match (which a lot of those girls did not) they won’t favor you. I’d recommend writing unique essays!

Plus, if you’re a boy your chances of getting in are better. If you’re a girl it’ll be much harder.

At the same time, remember what someone said above- nyu is unpredictable. Sometimes they’ll accept kids you’d think should get accepted, and reject kids who you think should’ve been accepted. I think you have a good shot though!

@ohdogg

Being male or female does not affect chances of admission.

@garcialexis

“My parents make less than 12,000 a year so I think I would be offered a good financial aid package…”

That actually makes little difference. NYU doesn’t meet need, nor will they remotely pretend to meet need. NYU will accept people who cannot afford to go because NYU is need blind for admissions. The admissions committee may select to admit someone, but the financial aid office may select to give them no aid.

Read my post on financial aid at the top of the NYU forum.

What about being ranked 3rd in a class of 460? Does that make a difference?

Like my post on financial aid says, when you’re accepted the university ranks how much it ‘wants’ you to go there. If you’re a highly desirable student, they’ll put you in ‘tier 1’ and give you a lot of money. If you’re less desirable, they’ll put you in ‘tier 2’ and give you less money. And so on from there. Your family’s EFC only matter in relation to how much money you will receive compared to other people in the same ranked tier as yourself.

No, we do not know how this system works in practice, no we don’t know how many tiers there are, no we cannot predict this and no we cannot tell who is in what tier after they’ve been accepted. You merely have to apply to NYU and find out much they give you.

@NYU2013 are you an actual person from NYU or are you just a normal, random person?

@garcialexis I think he knows what he is talking about.

@ garcialexis

As my name implies and location indicates, I’m a graduate of NYU. Graduated this past year and continued on to further studies.

@NYU2013 coudl you see if my ECs would make a difference if my grades are not as desirable as others?
I am an first generation immigrant that arrived in Canada in grade 7.

I had a 73 in Grade 9 , 79 in Grade 10(I struggled with Science and English but marks have jumped 13% in grade 11) but high 80s(87-88) this year and with my progress and improvements I certainly will get 90s+ in grade 12 as teachers have made it remotely possible to get 90s now in our school for grade 12. (Grade Median in our school is 73 in grade 9 , 75-76 in grade 10 and 78 in grade 11 , we are ranked as the top high school in Ontario , producing some of the best rates in Province Standardized Test the grade medians are also known due to the level of difficulty and marking perference )

However I believe I have some strong ECs and a forecaste of 2100 SAT score which I hope would really make a difference.

Do I stand a chance for ED1? With passionate comments and essay for NYU Stern?

NYU admissions is ‘holistic’, but heavily stats-driven. Your upward trend in grades is good, without know your class rank it’s difficult to judge exactly how much your grades will negatively affect you. Students in Stern are usually within the top 10-15% of their class, with almost everyone certainly being top quartile. Your admissions chances will heavily depend on what you actually ending up scoring on your standardized tests.

Do you have a chance? Yes. Do your ECs improve your chances? Yes. But, your chances of admission will largely depend on your class rank, which contextualizes your grades, and standardized test scores.
