NYU(NY) ED1 2018 Discussion

JenJen,

The LSP is relatively easier to get into than the other programs. Your cumulative GPA might hurt you. Is your GPA weighted or unweighted?

If you’re being recruited for Track, and NYU’s track coach says you’re the best candidate, you should gently ask him again, if you haven’t, and remind him that you’ve submitted your application, etc etc.

NYU doesn’t have much of a sports program. (Go Bobcats and Ultimate! <3) But if you’re a top candidate you have a pretty good chance of being accepted. Just remember that if you’re not accepted down the ‘sports’ path, you’ll have a moderately difficult chance as NYU considers your gpa/act as one of the prime factors of their decisions process.

Hey! Short question - I’ve gotten the e-mail from NYU and set up my Albert account and whatnot, but it says they haven’t received my transcripts as of yet. Is that sent in with the counselor recommendation or should I gently nudge her to send it in separately?

@darling Its sent in after the school ‘downloads’ the school report on the common app.

Alright, thank you!

@JenJenGirl: I’m getting recruited for XC/Track as well and we could be potential teammates! If you applied ED you should certainly get a boost. The coaches submit a list to the admissions committee on their top prospects. Assuming you have met with the coaches and had your official visit, chances are you are on the list. I was also told by the coach that specific emphasis on placed on athletes now more than NYU has done in the past. Applying ED allows that list to play an even greater role because of the smaller applicant pool. Make sure you remind him that you submitted your app. Just did that today.

I submitted my RD app today for Gallatin although I was planning on applying early(and the coaches kept pushing me for a commitment). I absolutely loved my visit and the team but my parents were too scared of NYU’s price tag that they didn’t want me using my early card. So, not sure if I might get an earlier notification of my decision(obviously not on the ED release date) but I don’t want to be waiting all the way to April. Regardless, best of luck to all!

Wow, kudos to you both for being runners. I have to gasp for air after running 40 feet. Respect.

37 daysssssss we can do it

@phillyapple Ahhh so excited we could be teamates! & yeah i’ve had a lot of contact with Coach Mcdonough… i really hope i get in !! What events do you run?

@violetavenger Thanks for the input! My GPA is unweighted. My school doesn’t weight classes, go to a top private school. But yes, the coach and I have been in contact about my application. He told me he’d give me a call as soon as he gets the news. It could be any day… I’m freaking out !

@jenjengirl Yeah, Coach Mcdonough must definitely want you on board if he plans on calling you on your decision. That’s a huge plus. I wasn’t given that luxury!

I’m a runner who goes for as long as it gets. 5k XC is my best event available with my team along with the 3200 in track. What really sets me apart though is my half marathon times and the times with really long distances. I can really hold a pace over longer distances but have been really working on my speed over the past few years. So, the idea is that college running affords me the opportunity to use my full potential in the longer distances.

I’m getting recruited for XC and track as well! I met the coach and he said he’d help me with the admission process, but Jen, my scores and grades are similar to yours so I’m not sure either. Also not the top recruit- I have around 19 minutes for 5k and around 2:20 for 800. Where are you guys from? It’d be great to be teammates!

@Nicki
Well, first some clarification that I am a guy but at least with our HS the guys and girls team are kinda one entity. From what I saw on the overnight visit I had that seems to be the same case at NYU as well which is awesome. My 5k PR is a 16:10 although I kinda pooped out this season and was supposed to break 16. I have a half marathon time from junior year of 1:16(roughly 5:45 pace) and 10 miler of 57:30(roughly 5:45) from soph year. I also have the disney half coming up which is gonna be awesome. Although I think I should be set in getting accepted, the help with being recruited has been huge as I’ve always wanted to go to NYU. I’m bummed I wasn’t able to apply ED, but hopefully applying RD before the ED deadline has some help in knowing my decision earlier. As my username implies I’m from philly!

GPA: 3.86 UW 4 APs Junior 5 APs Senior
ACT: 33
some other ECs: Student Council VP, Debate Club League Finalist, FBLA Nat’l Qualifier for Business Procedures, Chorus, Audio Tech(soundboard guy) for school Musical production, own my own tech support business

If we all end up going to NYU it will be funny to know that we all ran into each other on collegeconfidential as neurotic seniors haha

Hey everybody. So i’m freaking out right now because my counselor hasn’t submitted my transcript and there’s no way that she’ll get it in by the end of tomorrow. Will I still be considered for admission or will this ruin everything? agh! I really hope this isn’t bad news…

@PinkPurple95

I’m submitting my Common Application tomorrow night, and my counselor will be submitting everything past the deadline.

My recommenders will be submitting everything nearly a week after the deadline.

I’m assuming what the deadline entails is that you have to submit your Common Application and Supplements to NYU Nov. 8th. My counselor clarified this many times for me as well, since I was just as worried as you.

However, if your school is opting to mail in letters and grades, (which they shouldn’t because NYU wants electronic copies), then you should really get onto it.

Hey guys just wondering how long is your supplement?

@Binderboy Mine was 500 on the dot. But remember quality over quantity. I honestly thought their supplement was kinda off because it lead to a very choppy essay when I tried to tie together their 2 questions.

Thank you @VioletAvenger. This helps A LOT.

I agree that the supplement was a little weird. Of course I’m stressing myself out agian because I answered the two questions on the supplement separately. I really feel like I messed up! I’m not calming down until dec 15th…

No problem @PinkPurple95.

The supplement isn’t weird, it’s a creativity test. The questions themselves are unoriginal and definitely not thought-provoking, so they’re looking for people who can make it interesting.

I’m assuming that the average essay would extol the virtues of the city and the school. You should talk to college students and teachers about what to write about, assuming you haven’t submitted ED1.

@VioletAvenger
I already applied RD assuming that I was in good shape with the support of a coach, my scores, a strong CA essay, and my ECs. I’ll admit my supplement wasn’t creative but it helped better depict who I am and shed light on my attachment to NYU and an environment which allows me to flex intellectually. It was my understanding that the essay left very little room for creativity, and typically I can be very creative when it comes to writing and working with prompts. I spent a long time trying to rework those questions in a creative manner, and I think my essay just came out as addressing the prompts directly with a somewhat normal response. With all my other apps so far, I’ve found a ton of room for making my essays interesting, this one not so much. The essay did kinda take an average stance on the city environment so now I’m questioning that decision. I’d be incredibly bummed if my supplement somehow messes up my admission because everything else seems right in place.

@phillyapple Sounds awesome!

I was wondering how we get our NYU Albert info.

-Does NYU still use Albert for applicants?
-Do we get an id only if we’re accepted?
-If they do give applicants an Albert account, when should we expect it?

Anyone got info? Thanks!
