October 2012 PSAT score

I got my scores back as well. This year, scores seem to have come back fast! I’m in the Southwest, and so I was sure that I wouldn’t get my scores until right before winter break or January at least. :)

Got scores in Missouri yesterday. 77 in CR, 80 in Math, 70 in Writing, 227 total. You can definitely improve your scores between sophomore and junior year: I only got a 183 last year.

(Forgot to mention- I took the Wednesday test)

219 in Texas:

73 Critical Reading
76 Math
70 Writing Skills

Really, really hoping Texas doesn’t go over its highest cutoff – 219 – this year

Thank you for the responses. I know that I should just chill out, hope for the best and be happy with whatever happens. The university my daughter wants to attend offers a great package for NMS so I can’t help but dream and hope.

I’m paying all of older sibling’s college expenses, so it would be nice to catch a break. The good news is that older sibling has become more serious as a college student and is doing quite well.

@MasterYster: “moistened.” If you have any other questions regarding the test, I’d be happy to supply my answer (if I remember it). However, I think some people actually have the question booklets and online explanations; they should be of more help.

Congrats to everyone to all the NMSFs! I just found out that I get mine on the 14th. Can’t wait!

Has any California school gotten its PSAT scores yet?

In TX, getting mine Wednesday. I’m not too worried (pretty sure I can qualify for the semifinals), but there’s almost no chance that I bested my soph score (230). I know I missed at least one in each section.

Also, the grading curves don’t differ by state, do they?

Does anybody know the lowest score to get into the 99th percentile in Arizona this year?

ForeverFish, which TX school district are you in? I heard that St. Marks and Science and Engineering Magnet got theirs last week, but both are in DISD and my school hasn’t gotten them yet. So I guess it really just depends on the school…

I got mine on Friday since my guidance counselor wouldn’t tell me the scores when they were still at school :stuck_out_tongue:
I got a 223! I’m really happy with that, even though it seems mediocre on this website… oh well! Considering I got a 189 last year (as a sophomore) I am pleased with this outcome.
Now, if only the Dec SAT scores would come out already… I can’t wait any longer!

Does it seem like the cutoff would be higher or lower this year compared to previous years? I’ve heard that this year’s PSAT was a bit harder than usual. Is that true?

I got a 225! I’m really pleased with myself! Last year I scored a 195.

W: 80 M: 65 CR: 80

I’m happy I got those 80s, but it really bugs me that math was so low. :I I’m pretty sure that even though 225 is actually the exact same score I got on my practice test, I got above 70 on the math for the practice. It’s so annoying, because I want to go into a math-based field but I always end up scoring lower on this section. If only I could have pushed for one more 80! Oh well. I’m in NY so there’s a REALLY good chance I met the cutoff score for merit scholarship, which is the most important thing :D

kitts95 and heps1996:

you both showed nice improvement of at least 30 points from one year to the next. Would you mind sharing your prep/study strategy? Class? Tutor? Self-study?

Thanks

^ I know this wasn’t addressed to me, but I’ll add my input anyway. I went from a 215 last year to a 240 this year largely because of SAT preparation. The only extra studying I did for the PSAT was taking two PSAT practice tests (one of which I scored a 240 on). I highly recommend putting in a good number of hours studying the summer before junior year, taking the SAT in October, and taking the PSAT that same month. It worked wonders for me (2400/240!).

@StudiousMaximus Did you do anything at all to prep for your sophomore PSAT? And what book did you use for your 2 practice tests this year? Did you take any prep courses?

I tried to put a scoring chart together for the Wednesday test based on the reported scores. The first column represents the number of questions missed. I subtracted 1.25 points per miss. Omissions lose only 1 point and are not penalized the .25 points. Math write ins add a wrinkle because misses and omissions do not get the .25 point penalty and most people are not reporting what they missed in math. If the score is X.50 or more then you round up according to college board. Take a look and feel free to add to this or edit it as you see fit.

@RoseOak
This wasn’t addressed to me, sorry, but I really wanted to say this: Do NOT use Barron’s to prep for the PSAT. The book has a ridiculous amount of errors in it, and the questions are much harder than the questions on the real PSAT. I was scoring in the high 100s/low 200s while using that book, and felt terrible about myself. Then I tried out Princeton Review and Kaplan. I’d say that Princeton Review was closest in difficulty to the actual PSAT, while Kaplan was a bit easy. In the end, I raised my score by over 40 points.
TLDR; Go with Princeton Review.
