October 2012 SAT Discussion

I was told that October is the final one for the seniors and ETS makes an effort to be little less stringent. Otherwise ETS is notoriously deceptive. Be aware of it.

Here’s some positive words from a teacher of mine:

the test on saturday is a test of two things
aptitude, and endurance
stay focused
keep breathing
stay even
don’t put pressure on yourself
all you have to do is answer questions
you’re VERY good at that
that’s where your focus needs to be
each question is a different adventure
each question is going to require you to use your talent and skill and intellect to answer correctly
that, withing itself, is plenty to occupy your mind
you’re going to do really well
(this is not a pep talk, this is the straight up truth)
you’re going to get the best score you’ve ever gotten in any practice
you’re going to do so by taking each question one at a time
and by no longer pretending that you’re not ready for this test
there is NO QUESTION that can be on this test that will be a surprise
you’re ready and you only need to breathe and think

Godspeed mates, I’ll be aiming for that 2K.

I’m not worried about anything but math, math just kills me…

Could one realistically get a 10/11 on the essay by fabricating information? I really believe that the twenty-five minute restriction is quite ridiculous and arbitrary.

I find that my most creative and illustrative examples often work the best; struggling and raking my mind for examples is frustrating when under pressure.

For those interested, I’ve listed some of my favorite constructions. Please excuse the brief stereotyping in the second example.

(Generic Name)'s (Vague but Seemingly Deep Title)…(verb)…(noun).

(Binger’s A Time of Reflection dictates the unchanging nature of (x).)

(Intelligent Asian) of the (Prestigious Institution)…(verb)…(noun).

(Dr. Sanjeed Anawar of the NIH criticizes BN-6, a toxic additive.)

(Generic News Agency)'s report on (Anything)…(verb)…(noun).

(The TNA’s report on unemployment trends in Spain highlights a (x).)

I often find that coming up with creative and humorous examples not only saves time, but also promotes enjoyment in an otherwise stressful task. You’ll have the pleasure of knowing that you’re actually gaming the College Board - the graders cannot reasonably verify the verisimilitude of your information within limited time constraints.

It is a personal belief that studying extensive historical, scientific, and artistic literature ahead of time is truly unnecessary. The imagination triumphs all, for all new knowledge ultimately arises from imagination itself.

Can you guys provide some good names for fake literature examples? I come up with the lamest titles under pressure that is blatantly obvious that I fabricated simply for the purpose of the exam, LOL.

My go-to “Wood Stone.” Or “Swish!” Or “The Deception.” LOL

I’m aiming for a 2400. And I’m extremely worried about each section, even though I’m exceedingly good at all of them (narcissism ftw?). Why? Because for some reason, I always make stupid mistakes. Always.

I’ve gotten 800s on each section before on released tests. Just not at the same time. If I get 800 in math, then 700 writing; if I get 800 reading, then 720 reading; if I get 800 writing, then 730 math. Every time. I always end up overthinking in critical reading, or bubbling in incorrectly in math, or not knowing what to write on the essay and make up something and get a 9. Sometimes all three. It’s even worse because I know that I have the capacity to get a 2400, and yet I don’t. It stings my pride, it really does.

@CErnie: You can absolutely score a 12 by fabricating examples. I have prepared examples so that I don’t have to, but if you’re willing and practiced, go ahead! The readers don’t have time to verify the information.

@TheNexus: I’m going to give it to you straight: those names are terrible. Try this formula: Preposition + Adjective + Noun, as in “Before the Stark Night.” You could always start it with “on” to make more scholarly title: “On Perception,” “On the Materialism of Man,” etc.

@basicspace: Have you ever gotten a near 2400 on a single sitting? If not, it may be a bit tough for you to get it all together on test day. But if you focus exceedingly well, you could do it. Also, it would be cool if your name were a reference to a song by The xx. But it probably isn’t.

Fabricating examples on the essay is like writing about an overused example. If you have the know how to write a beautiful paper that way, by all means, do so, but for the average student, it’s best to have a go-to example bank (or at least have a bunch of examples floating around in your head that you can BS/embellish as necessary) since it’s easier to score high that way.

Does anyone have the May 12 sat paper, possibly with answers? Ive searched forums and no luck sadly

@rebellion510

that really helped me! kudos to your teacher! I’m in my room having a nervous breakdown because today was my last SAT prep class.

Hoping for a 2300+. I know I can score 800s on the writing and CR sections but my math is ridiculously inconsistent. I’ve taken around 10 practice tests and I’ve gotten an even distribution between 650-750. Any tips on how to stop making stupid mistakes? Because everytime I take practice tests 18/3 somehow becomes equal to 9 and absolute values can magically be negative

@StudiousMaximus:
Why yes, yes it is :P.

The highest scores I’ve gotten on legit practice tests are 2350, 2330, and 2250, so maybe if I can cut my way through all the work for my 6 AP classes early I’ll be able to devote some more time to actually doing the packets I’ve gotten from an SAT prep course (did like half of them).

Ankituk, PM me your email address and I can send u the may 2012 SAT test. :)

@basicspace: Nice! I love The xx. My favorite song of theirs is probably Heart Skipped a Beat.

Two days left, everyone! I’m crossing my fingers for a manageable test and nice curve.

For those of you who PM me for the May test… college confidential turns second part of your email into ****. so make sure you put a space and tell me if your email address is at gmail or hotmail or yahoo or aol or etc…

I’m really scared about the essay. Apparently the May test was about reality TV, which pretty much screwed everyone’s example banks. Here’s to a more manageable prompt that I don’t have to BS my way through.

^ Nice, I love all of those songs. I agree that Coexist isn’t quite as strong as their debut, but I still love it. Fiction, Reunion, Chained, Tides, Sunset, and Angels are all really good.

I found a watch that doesn’t beep at Walmart! Huzzah! It took almost twenty minutes of intensely searching and testing various watches. I also picked up some sweet pencils at the recommendation of a fellow CC’er. I’m finally prepared for Saturday.

Good luck for everybody !

Dang it…need to make 15 posts before i can PM anyone :stuck_out_tongue: haha

SAT is in an hour. Sitting in hotel room freaking out… it’s 6:34am
