*Official Fall 2013 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

@yousufayan7
Did you TAG? I think you have a reasonable chance at all of your colleges except UCB. UCD is probably a slight reach for you. UCSC is a match. I’m not comfortable with the statistics of non-UC schools, but I assume that you will have a good shot there.

That is my personal assessment of your application. Good luck!

@ JulianLee93: What did you mean by “prompts playing little to no role”? Its hard to say exactly “how much” do the EC’s weigh in on your application. I would assume that the GPA is the first thing they see though. However, the EC’s do kind of reinforce your grades. I suggest you try harder in the up coming semesters, they like “upward trend”. Hopefully give an explanation in your PS for your grades if they aren’t great.

My grades weren’t great either. I had a 3.49 gpa but showed a strong upward trend in grades. I had 5 classes my last semester at CCC, got A’s in all of them, while working 45 hours a week to support my family. Years and years of work experience and two pretty strong PS’(that also explained my low gpa). So as you can see the gpa may not be everything that determines your admission. For me, the other stuff on my app really helped my fairly low gpa. At the transfer level, it seems that the universities like to see applications of students who have some “life experience”, unlike kids out of high school that have nothing to bank on but grades.

At UCLA orientation an app reviewer told us that they go through hundreds of the “same” application everyday. If they see an app that stands out to them, maybe upward trend in grades, EC’s, strong PS or whatever, they will pull it to a separate pile and have a second and third reviewer take a look at the app. If they both like the app, than the student is admitted.

@iDizzle
Wow, 45 hours a week! I don’t know how you did it but it’s amazing you pulled through with such circumstances. And what I said about the prompts playing little to no role was in response to what you said in your initial reply to me, “…since UCLA and CAL are the only 2 UC’s that take your PS into consideration when reviewing your application.” I was wondering if that meant my PS won’t be taken into consideration much because I’m applying to UCI rather than UCLA or CAL.

I think I have decent EC’s (nearly half a decade of work experience, not including couple hundred ours of community service). My financial and family situation was not exactly alike yours (my family is well off financially), however my parents have a fairly unique philosophy. They began from humble beginnings and built themselves up. In hopes to instill a similar force of willpower and desire, they let us work for what we wanted since we entered our early teen’s (I helped work at my fathers store for about 3 years, between 10-30 hours a week; however I figured I can’t really put this on my EC’s…). So though I don’t work to support my family, I work so they won’t have to support me. I used this story for one of my PS’ for the record.

Also, realistically speaking, how does my outlook seem with just a 3.1 gpa, 3.5 major gpa, those EC’s, PS’, completed Pre-Reqs, and specifically for transferring to UCI from UCR. Currently I’m in Pre-Business and will be applying for UCI Business Admin(1st choice) or Business econ. I’m debating whether I should go for it or just apply for UCR’s SoBA (seeing as UCI & SoBA are on equal standings in terms of being a reputable business school). I want UCI for the location and general convenience.

I’m pretty sure UCI reads personal statements. I believe its UCB, UCLA, UCI and UC Merced that read personal statements.

@ JulianLee93: Hey that’s great, you should definitely add that to your PS even though it was for your parent’s store. I find that a lot of people use the PS as a last-chance-if-all-else-fails tactic. So basically when it comes to the PS most people don’t hold back.

Realistically speaking, most of the people going from UC-to-UC are pretty competitive(especially for business). But hey, you don’t know if you don’t try right? So like I said, if you can pull harder over the next few semesters they definitely like seeing upward trend. Also UC-to-UC transfers have a higher chance than those transferring from other 4 years. UCLA for example(since this data is posted) had a 22% admit rate from other UC campuses vs. a 7% admit rate from other California universities. There were 743 UC-to-UC applicants, 167 were admitted, and 112 of those admitted actually enrolled at UCLA. So this leads me to believe that the other 55 students who did not enroll were probably over-qualified and enrolled at CAL or maybe some other crazy-good schools. Average gpa admitted for UC-to-UC transfers was 3.66. But like I said, you don’t know unless you try. Are you pretty firm on those schools? You should apply to more of the UC campuses. You catch more fish if you throw out a bigger net. I actually applied to 12 schools(got into all but Cal). LOL. That way if you don’t get accepted you can say “Ok, maybe I didn’t get into Irvine, but I can choose from these other schools, and worse case stay at Riverside”.

For the PS thing, the general consensus regarding the PS is that the other UC campuses beside LA and Cal only read the personal statement for “scholarship” reasons. However, if you check the threads from last year there was something circulating regarding possibly Irvine and SB starting to read the PS since the application pool was more competitive last year.

@ JulianLee93: Take a look at this; [Profile of Admitted Applicants](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions/profile_admitted.html). The information is very vague but maybe you can get something out of it. That’s why I like the data that UCLA provides since it is a very detailed break down of applicant information.

thanx for the help! Most likely I am going to have a a 3.14ish GPA by the end of the fall quarter, so I maybe might get into UCD (Cuz its my first choice). I am just hoping that they will consider my specific situation (GAD…).

@ yousufayan7: I think you should be ok under your circumstances. I saw that there was a 2010 or 2011 applicant on this forum somewhere that had a low gpa due to having cancer and taking time off school for treatment. I believe he got rejected but appealed and got accepted.

transferring from UCR to UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB as a junior

* But by the looks of it, I should have a 3.75-3.78GPA for fall quarter.

UCLA - will not complete pre-reqs in time (missing 1 intro to phil, 1 lifesci)
UCSD - will not complete pre-reqs in time (missing 1 cs)

CCC Transfer 2013. Applied to UCLA, UCSB, UCSC and UCR
(I really want to go to UCSB so chance me on SB please?)

hopefully 3.7 by the end of Spring '13

Junior Transfer 2013
At time of transfer:
Completed IGETC
Completed all Pre-reqs
TAP certified for UCLA (No TAG)
65 UC transferable credits

EC: 100+ hours at L.A. Superior Court
20 Hours MEND

Chances?

CC Transfer for Fall 2013 Applying to UCSB (TAG) UCLA UCSC UCB UCD

Major: ECON
GPA: 3.6
Major GPA: 3.8

Prereqs: Done
IGETC: Done
60 Units will be done
English and Math requirements Completed.

Mainly concerned with admission to UCSB cause that’s where I want to go. And can the Tag guarantee be affected because econ is so impacted?

@ NYCALI: I think you’re pretty much set, especially if SB is you’re first choice. It’s possible that impacted majors can have an affect on tag. I’m not exactly sure. 3.6gpa is pushing it for Econ @ Cal or UCLA but for SB, SC and Davis you should be in a good position.

Applied to SJSU, CSULB, UCLA, UCB, UCSB AND UCI

Current Transfer GPA 3.66
Major: Anthropology

By spring 2013:
IGETC completed
Max Major Prep (very small CC)
TAG for UCSB

EC: President of HS Drama Club, borderline ridiculous amount of volunteer work, working two jobs, co-founder of local “teens for tolerance” and Member of Honors society.

First Generation College Student
Moderate Personal Statement (Hard worker, two jobs, no car, while simultaneously taking 25 units and maintaining a 3.6. Local CC is six classrooms above a Rite Aid, no guidance counselors available and no other students my age.)

Frankly I will be happy getting into any school. I am trying not to have my heart set on UCLA or UCB (because I know my chances aren’t that great) but does anyone think I could make it? I want to keep my feet on the ground but I’d like to think I have a shot.

School: UC Berkeley
Junior Level Transfer Student
Major: Music
GPA: 3.79 (Will be 3.83 after my Spring 2013 semester, although that won’t matter in decision process)
IGETC Completed
EC: Fairly strong, have made various notable achievements in the music industry.
Other: Positive Grade Trend. (Took a couple years off of school, since I came back have had a 4.0). Good major prep.

I realize that Music is more dependent on the actual person and talent than numbers, but given that I have the skills, and that Cal is not a major Music school, what do you think my chances are?

@ Persephone93: Your chances are pretty good. Your gpa is solid for anthro. I transferred to UCLA for anthro Fall 2012. I only had a 3.5 GPA, but my EC’s and PS were really good. But you should be in a great position.

@iDizzle: Thank you, its nice to hear from a fellow Anthro major. I just hope I can maintain my gpa. I have to take 25 units in spring, one of them retaking my failed math requirement (for me math and online classes do NOT mix). I’m just happy someone thinks I have a good chance. :)

@ Persephone93: Uh oh, what is the math course that you are retaking? Is it Calc(I know UCI requires calc for anthro, ridiculous btw) or is it Stats/College Algebra(GE math requirement)? I didn’t take calc but still got accepted to UCI but if you are taking the GE math requirement you may be screwed. The UC’s will reject you no matter how high your GPA if you have your English or Math requirement IP during Spring 2013. If that is the case, please please take the math class in the winter!

What? I’m retaking statistics and am majoring for the cultural emphasis. But if it’s done before the end of Spring 12 there shouldn’t be a problem right? There is no winter term at the school I’m in :frowning: !!

“In fulfilling the minimum transfer eligibility requirements in English and mathematics, UC Irvine requires that these courses be completed no later than the spring term prior to fall quarter enrollment at UCI.”

Similar messages are posted for UCLA, UCB and all the UC’s. As long as it’s completed in the spring prior to fall admission I should be okay. As long as I complete my math requirement before the end of Spring 13 I should be okay. If I manage to fail again, yeah I’ll be screwed. I’ll be really really screwed.

@ Persephone93: I don’t know about that. You should definitely call to confirm whether “By the Spring” means before or after spring. The major does not matter. Last year, people with 3.8+ GPAs were getting rejected from UCSB etc. because they had their minimum math or english requirements IP during the Spring. The UC’s don’t know if you are going to pass the basic requirements since its during the Spring so they don’t allow you to do it. Decisions are released early/mid Spring semester so if you still have math or english IP during the Spring they can’t make a decision.

I highly highly suggest you take Stats at another community college during the Winter. I know its hell to get classes especially if its a different school than your CC but this could make or break you.
