*Official Fall 2013 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

I really really appreciate idizzle chancing me but I would like to get one or two more opinions on my chances. I’ll post my stats again:

Applied to: UCLA, CAL, UCSD, UCSB
Intended major: psychology; Alternate: Anthropology ( for UCLA only)
IGETC: done
Major preqs: done
GPA: 3.71
TAP certified
units after last semester: 60; will have around 68 after spring

I was just wondering to what extent will me being TAP certified with a 3.71 gpa and all my majors preqs done, including finishing IGETC, work in my favor? Again, I really appreciate it.

Hello! I had a chance-me post in this thread on October last year, at that time I only had 2.7 gpa. But now situation gets changed. So could somebody please chance me based on what I am showing below?

3.35 uc transferable gpa and 3.40 cc gpa right now.

major in economics.
major prereqs, igetc, uc minimum req all done by the end of spring, for UCSB and UCD.
for this spring, currently taking last econ, and stat, and last english course.
no tag with any UCs.
good gpa upward trend.

how possible can i get admitted by UCSD, UCD, UCSB, UCI? It would very helpful if somebody could shed light on this. Thank you!

@ Sithlord:I don’t know what to say, only that you are taking on a huge feat and I commend you and wish you the best! I don’t think anyone in history has ever attempted what you are about to! LOL. I agree with dilapidated about how the UC’s have very little to judge you on especially if you’ve got more than half your units IP. Hell, if you’ve got your English or math requirement IP during the spring they generally will reject you as well since you don’t have the basic requirement done and they still can’t judge whether you will pass those classes or not. But like I said, lets see how it plays out. Good luck!

@ alevy123: LOL. I don’t remember what I told you last time but you’re basically in. If you don’t get in for psych, you will definitely get in for anthro.

3.71 is a solid GPA. TAP certification will give you an edge, especially since it will get your alternate considered at UCLA and Cal(I’m sure you know, but LA and Cal do not consider alternates UNLESS you are TAP cert.). Finishing IGETC and prereqs will work in your favor because you’ve done everything possible! Not everyone has all prereqs done even though they have IGETC done. =]

@tcccom: Okay, 3.4 is rather low for Econ seeing as it is one of the most impacted majors. However, the upward trend from a 2.7 is great and will definitely be put into consideration! My biggest concern though is, if I read your post correctly, you are taking stats and your last English course this spring? Generally, taking your basic math and English requirement to fulfill IGETC during the Spring before transfer is a HUGE no no. That is why I always suggest to have your IGETC done way before hand and leave prereqs for last. Last year we saw applicants with 3.8ish GPAs get rejected from lower tier UCs like SB because they had math or English IP during the Spring.

@iDizzle First, thank you for chancing me!

I also hope the gpa trend will give me a rescue!

Your understanding is correct. Forgot to mention this, I already finished calculus series. Taking stat is only because UCD & UCSB need this one as a major prereq. English 1A has been finished, so the one remaining for UC basic requirement is only the last one English course. Will it still strongly affect my chances?

Besides this, I am also worried about I don’t have tags for any UCs. As you see, I am at the borderline (especially I believe 3.2 is the boundary for those UCs I’ve applied with my major.). At this point, I am really at a loss. I’ve been searching for information about people with a major of Econ got into those UCs with similar GPA to me and no tag. Unfortunately, it was really hard to find out.

@dilapidatedmind

Thanks for the link I was looking for that. I had a friend who waitlisted at UCLA last year… or maybe she lied cause she didn’t end up going. And I’ll know my grades for 20 units by mid May and for the other 20 I’ll know up to the final so for at least half of my classes I will be able to submit a grade. Anyway I’ll let you know what happens in a couple months.

@tcccom
Not so sure about UCSD but the other schools I think you have a good chance.

Quick question does anybody know if AP credits count as units? And how many units?

@tcccom: Oh ok. You should be in the clear regarding the requirements than! If you take a look at Pg. 21 of this thread you can see that I posted a bunch of decision/chance threads from last year. If you have time you should skim through them and see who got accepted to econ last year and their GPA. It will give you a better idea.

is it okay if i didnt take calc 1 but skipped to calc 2 instead?

@ umairk27: Calc 1 is a prereq to Calc 2 no? Did you test into Calc 2? If the prereqs for your major specifically say Calc 1 and 2 than you might have to take them both. You should check with the universities.

@iDizzle: yeah it is. but ive given my gce advanced level exam in mathematics and according to haas’ website i dont have to give calc 1. thats what i did. but i was wondering if it would count against me for other campuses since they dont mention anything in particular about the gce advanced level exams. some people ive talked to said by taking a harder class (calc2) it should waive calc1 automatically. what do you think?

@tcccom: I forgot to ask above…Eng 1A? Are you going to Mt. Sac btw? lol.

About TAG, You should have definitely filled it out, I know it’s too late now but it would have helped a lot. For example, not only is Econ extremely impacted but UCSD requires a 3.5 for their TAG program.

@ umairk27: Oh I see. Yeah you’re right, I mean if you took a test that waived Calc 1 and you actually took Calc 2, logically speaking you should not have to take Calc 1. What other schools did you apply to? You should talk to their admissions and ask if skipping Calc 1 will hurt you in anyway. The only negatives from not taking Calc 1 that I could think of is that the universities may say like “Oh this person landed in Calc 2 and took the class, but these other people took 1 and 2.” or like “Even if they landed in Calc 2 maybe this person missed out on basics from Calc 1 from not taking it”. I don’t know. Not trying to scare you or anything. You should just double check but logically why would you take Calc 1 after finishing Calc 2, you know. LOL

Here are my stats and the colleges I applied to. What do you think? Do I have a shot at getting in?

All major requirements will be completed
All breadth requirements will be completed except one
IGETC will be completed
All A’s except in Calculus II due to reasons explained in the additional comments section
15 GCE O&A Level (Cambridge International Examinations) with 11A’s and 4B’s

@umairk27: Oh dude, you don’t have anything to worry about.

^ why do ppl even ask for chance opinions when theyre GPA is like 3.8 and above and their ECs are awesome… -______-

@Futurehighlander - Because we are still nervous/scared/second guessing ourselves like everyone else on this thread. Students with 3.8s, 3.9s, and 4.0s get rejected every cycle so there are no guarantees, great gpa and ECs or not (especially within competitive majors). Your response is the exact reason I’ve refused to post my stats and ask awesome people like iDizzle and dilapidatedmind to chance me.

@ PreMedaholic: If you’re stats are within that range, I think you should take a load off because you’re in the running. I understand that you are still nervous(and who wouldn’t be) but you’ve done everything that you could have up to this point. Good luck!

:( when the average GPA admitted is like 3.90+, it does kinda scare you…
