Official Fall 2014 Columbia Transfer Thread

@dysfunctional I applied and got rejected. Honestly, I think you should work really hard on the essay if once you have decent stat. Apply to Columbia via Combined Plan if possible. I have friends with 4.0 GPA from top 20 schools got rejected by all the schools.

How many of you guys have gotten financial aid offers yet? I haven’t yet, and I’m getting nervous, because EVERYTHING depends on what kind of financial aid they give me.

Hey @Schief thanks for the reply. I’m sorry to hear about your rejection. I’m sure you will do well in the future
I did pretty well first semester with a 3.824, but spring semester was sort of difficult and I believe my GPA will go down to a high 3.6 or 3.7. I need to do well this fall to bring it up again :(

Unfortunately, there is not combined program with Rutgers and Columbia so I do not have that option.
I was thinking of working on my essay slowly throughout this summer!

@megmayumi financial aid is online! You should be able to log in and check. If yours isn’t, I would call!

@cj2017 I logged onto the financial aid portal, and it takes me to the home page with the disclosure stuff, but there’s no links or any way to view my actual financial aid status. Is that normal?

@dysfunctional‌ I was also a freshman at Rutgers this past year and Im going to Columbia next year. My brother went to Rutgers for two years though before he got into Columbia so I can more give you advice from him. Over the summer going into sopomore year he studied pretty hard for the SAT subject tests and got an 800 in math 1 math 2 and physics. Your GPA is to the low side so you need something like that to assure them that you are very smart. Also the coming fall semester is the most important for rec letters. Work especially hard on classes that are smaller and with professors you think like you. Go to every office hours from these professors and ask insightful questions. Meet with the dean for advising and come off as intelligent and hard working. Columbia requires a letter from two professors and the dean. I met with an advisor from Columbia who told me that they are worried that people applying after sophomore year will not graduate on time. Include in your essays a reason why you will be able to graduate on time. Best of luck!

@megmayumi‌ Thats what I see also

@mesh33 Can you tell me your GPA? I am trying to figure out why I got rejected. Did you apply to SEAS?

@Schief‌ I applied CC my stats are on page 14. Last year I got rejected from ten schools now I got accepted to Columbia There’s a lot of luck involved and its unpredictable I think it is almost impossible to figure out why you were rejected some perfect candidates are rejected every year and some people with pretty average stats are accepted.

I tried making a Facebook group for accepted students, but it didn’t let me create the group without adding somebody from my friends list…

Could you try to randomly adding one of your friend after getting their permission? It will be so great to have a facebook group for transfer this year

@mesh33‌ Thank you for the advice! Yes I am pretty disappointed that my GPA will be falling because of spring semester. I literally worked my butt off during the fall. I met with the first year dean for engineering couple of times during my freshman year because the school messed up my class placements.

What would I possibly talk with a dean about in particular?

I made a request to the facebook group! But my college is still marked as UCLA because I don’t want to alienate friends yet…

Is anyone planning not to attend Columbia as a rising Junior? Please give me some hope… Waitlisted here

Anyone know how housing works? When do we apply for housing? Also are transfers guaranteed singles?

@Frisbole‌ Have you paid the deposit yet? I think we get an email the last week of May? Not sure about singles. Can you keep me posted as well, as I am curious about the same stuff? Did you get your admissions packet?

@curiositycrack‌ I did. But I submitted a plan of study that proved I could graduate in 4 semesters only as Columbia is really strict about their 8 total semesters rule

How do we sign up for housing?
