Official March SAT Math Discussion 2008

shimshimhey: sqrt(2x+3x+4x)=5x
Find x by using the quadratic formula.

It was probably A, B, C, D, and P...I think I put "C" because I kep thinking that when you first reflect, you end up at C, even though it wasn't the final answer.

All well, stupid error :-/

julie i did that. my calc read 0 and 1.8... ***FFF
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6794/hahhfm7.jpg

^^ it has to be 25x^2, not 5x^2

You forgot to square the 5. The equation was 25x^2-9x=0.
A= 25
B= -9
C= 0

-(-9) +/- sqrt(81) over 2(25)

DAMMIT! WOWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwww

yea ur math is correct except u didnt square the 5 as well. it should be 9X=25X (the from X 25 is squared) and u cancel the X's to get 9=25X. the divide by 25

Does anyone remember the two problems on the grid-in section that had 8 as the answers?

^
the average of this set of 7 numbers was equal to the set's median
and
the area of this weird 5-sided polygon

julie you are correct

laugh-cry-smile: Thanks! Was the 5-sided polygon the rectangle that had an area of 6 and a triangle with an area of 2?

They were the area of the figure (where you made a triangle and a rectangle) and the one where you found the length of the side of the triangle.

no problem (:
and yep !

yeah i got two 8s.
my friends were like "omg theres no WAY there could have beeen TWOOO eights" and i'm like :( oh ok...

but oh mann thanks for getting 8s as well everyone!

does anyone else that has experience with the SAT think there'll be a curve of -1?

idk if this is right but i thought the reflection question was solved like this
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh298/1234abc4321/mathrpoblemoa4.jpg

no cuz the drawing is wrong
and ur suppose to reflect first with line L (or line that's more horizontal)

1234 that's how i did it too....i'm not sure what to even think about that one...

also, columbia lover, i don't think order matters...try it

what do you mean about the drawing being wrong?

well... that wasn't a drawing i remebered
line L had positive slope so it was more like / shape

and there was one point that was left to line K and pt P
