Just got the excellence email today! I’m actually surprised considering my essay.

I’m so happy, Congrats to all. This was my email:

Congratulations on being awarded the Excellence scholarship through the Morrill Scholars Program!

You will minimally receive the Excellence award which is equivalent to the value of in-state tuition, but you may also be considered for both the Prominence and Distinction Level. Please note, in-state tuition does NOT cover the out state surcharge.

Please look for an email from the Program Manager with this information, if you are selected for the distinction award. The award level will be posted to your online MSP account and if there is a change in the award then that will be reflected in your status on your MSP online account in March 2012. Please note, no award information has been posted online yet.

I have also attached a list of commonly asked questions for you to review.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Classy!!! I am so happy for you! Yay!

Congratulations dear!

thanks mspearl.
congratulations to your daughter as well.

@mspearl,
Would you be able to share what were some of the interview questions that are asked? This is my first interview so I’m very nervous. Also, would you be able to tell me if I should be dressed in business casual (slacks and button-down shirt) or business formal (suit)? Thanks and congrats to your daughter!

I’m sorry, my D didn’t interview. But there are some others on this thread with kids that did or will.

Good luck!

As I mentioned before the Morrill scholarship can be combined with some other scholarships. My DS got a morrill promience (don’t know if that is still offered); the buckeye (which is for out of state students with a certain gpa and sat score) and another scholarship for being a national hispanic scholar through the psat/nhrp program. The scholarships totaled a full-merit ride which we are extremely grateful for everyday that my DS is at Ohio State (he is a soph. this year.) Good luck to everyone. I have found Ohio State to be very generous in terms of merit award.

Mine still says “submitted for review”.

I feel really bad about this because I think I screwed up on the activities part…

Got this baby a few days ago:

—So is the Excellence Award around $9800?

Packalldwy

Congratulations. We’re hoping to get some good news sometime soon also.

You can find the tuition on the website. The description for the scholarship reads in-state tuition, which is about $9,300. They may mean tuition and fees, which is about $9,700.

Their website also suggests anticipating 5-10% increases. Last year I think tuition went up about 3%. At 5%, the value of the scholarship would be $9765 w/o fees and $10,200 with fees.

I think they took the National Buckeye from 9700/9800 to 10,000, so that’s a 2-3% increase.

Did you interview for Distinction? If so, was your notice before or after the interview?

There are many students who receive the excellence award but in getting the distinction award, they only award about 10 full ride scholarships per year.

So has anyone heard about the higher awards or do they select the prominence from the excellence awardees?

Can I ask those who received the award when you submitted your application? I was wondering if they are sending out the emails in order, random, or to those who have a higher chance of getting the full ride.

I unfortunately haven’t heard anything and the wait is killing me.

@whateverhappens

Its pretty confusing, but see Classy19’s post on 2/8 in this thread. It indicates that they will make the selection from the excellence awardees.

My son hasn’t received notice that he’ll be receiving an award at any level. He’s interviewing for distinction, but if he doesn’t get distinction I’m hoping he’ll at least get prominence. We’d be grateful for excellence.

So, I’m hoping there is another path to prominence.

I submitted my app around November 10th. And thanks, John.

Does anyone have an idea of how many people interview for the Distinction and how many people actually get it? Also, how much exactly is the decision based upon the interview? Thx

rundmc

I can’t find it again, but earlier someone on this threaded posted he/she had talked w/ the diversity office and were told they were interviewing 60 candidates and were selecting 10 for the distinction award.

Regarding the interview, you have to have one to be considered. So in that regard it is critical. After that, looking posts on this from prior years, I certainly don’t know. It appears the process has changed over the last few years so who knows?

Could someone describe how you are checking award status on your MSP account? On my son’s account, the only options (to the left) are Home, Applicant Links (unactivated, so you it isn’t a link), View Application, Change Password and Logout.

Thanks

You should be able to log into your Ohio State account, click on financial aid and then at the top click on awards. I am not sure if the MSP account you are talking about is the same thing or if THAT award shows up in there. I know that is where we will be looking for the special scholarships.

JohnKS, if you click on view application it will say application status. Even though my son got an award, it still says submitted for review. Looking at prior years responses, their status didn’t change for awhile as well. So, it looks as though we are all hearing first through the email account that was put on the application.

NervousNellie1, we are checking the status on the Morrill Scholarship Online Application page under view application.
