Official NYU 2011 Transfer Thread

With all due respect, may I know why you guys want to transfer to NYU? What about it really appeals to you, I feel fortunate to be a freshman at Stern but I’m really not enjoying my time here, maybe if I hear why other people want to come here I’d be able to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

At any rate, I wish you all the best of luck.

Hello guys, its my first time here on college confidential. I am an international undergraduate student interested in transferring to NYU in Fall 2011.

Shedding some light on my college record-

I was initially enrolled at DePauw university for Fall 2009, but I had the worst college start there. I was enrolled in 4 classes (14 credits) namely Psy 100, Calculus 2, College writing 2 and American Islam (first year seminar). I failed in 3 of them and got a D in my seminar. GPA was a shocking 0.33. I got academically suspended and I accept full responsibility for what happened.

I than moved to Linn Benton community college (LBCC) in Oregon for my Winter 2010 semester and took 15 credits( SOC 204,GEOG 202 Physical Science 104 and CH 221). I ended up with a 3.9

For Spring 2010 semester I took 24 credits (Psy 201, Physics 201, WR 121, Political Science 204, Hist 201, SPN 101 and Religion 102). I ended with a 4.0.

I did my summer 2010 semester at Oregon State University, took 16 credits ( Math 252, Communication 111, ST 201, ECON 202 and a physical education class). I ended up with a 3.81.

I am doing my Fall 2010 semester LBCC and am registered for ANTH 103, ART 204, ECON 201,ENG 104,SPN 102 and MUS 108. The semester is going pretty smooth and am expecting a good result.

SAT-1800

I am not sure how the fact that I go to an out-of-state community college will affect my transfer application. If it helps in any way or makes my app any stronger I can transfer and do my winter and spring 2011 semesters at Oregon State University (OSU). The only reason why I was holding off my plan to transfer for Fall 2010 is because I thought changing schools so many times will act in my disadvantage in the application process.

My intended major is Economics and I want to apply to college of letters,arts and sciences. I am not sure what kind of a chance I stand in getting into NYU. But the dramatic change in my academic record is evident. Besides I have re-taken all the classes I have failed in at Depauw and ended up with good grades.

It would be great if you guys could let me know what kind of a chance I stand and also suggest some suitable schools for me. I am already considering a couple of them.

Thanks

Well I want to transfer because I’ll be much closer to home in NJ and my friend from hs goes to Juliard so we would be closer as well. That and I hate Miami University. Why don’t you like Stern?

Location, Location, Location.

As a business major, this can’t be said enough.

@the storm

NYC is my favourite city in the world, and it’s been my dream to attend for a long time.
Plus, it’s a decent university as well, ;)

hey I’m applying as a second semester freshman to NYU Steinhardt-is it true that it’s easier to get in as a spring transfer student rather than fall?

@kmart

not necessarily. spring has fewer applicants but also fewer spots as well. difficulty is more or less the same.

@tallFrodo

okay cool, I had just heard so many conflicting things-but that makes the most sense.

I was also wondering–i got 18 hours from the IB diploma program at my high school and now I’m currently enrolled in 17 hours as a first semester freshman at University of Texas at Austin. Since, by the end of the semester, I should have 35 hours/credits, will that satisfy the 32 hours needed to transfer for next semester (even though I’m in the process of completing those final 17 hours? I have already turned in my application and all the necessary requirements)
thanks!

Can you please help me in determining the number of credit hrs I’ll have by the end of next semester?

Fall:
Elementary Spanish (4hrs+1hr-TA session is compulsory)
Calc 2 (3hrs/w)
Intro to Econ (3hrs/w)
Writing (3hrs/w)

Spring:
Elementary spanish 2 (3hrs + 2hrs-TA compulsory)
Labor Econ 3hrs/w
Linear Algebra 3hrs/w
Physics intro (3hr/w+3hrs/w lab)

@kmart

i’m pretty sure they don’t accept first semester freshmen

@maheen

look up your courses on your catalog and find out the credits per course.
they should be on your transcript as well

I am a Sophomore right now, but will I be considered a Junior transfer because I have 16 units of AP credit?

I dont think all my classes are going to transfer over, though.

My unofficial transcript says that I’ll have 8 credits in total by the end of spring semester. But it doesn’t say anything abt credit hrs.

Btw, i need 32 credits to graduate from my current college. I have four from my A-Levels so after the spring sem, I ll just need 20 credits to graduate.

What up i’m applying as a 2nd semester freshman transfer for Fall 2011. I’m probably a little unclear as to what courses i still have to take in order to fulfill their transfer requirements, but whatever!! I cant wait for the transfer deadline to approach I need NYC so bad!!! Stern school of business!!

On the Stern Special Program Requirements Page it says that you need one semester of financial accounting…but in looking through other College Confidential threads people say financial and managerial accounting are needed…so is it one or both?

[Stern Special Program Requirements](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

@stickerrs
no they will still consider you as a sophomore transfer.
you only need to take managerial accounting if you want to go in to the BA-MS program for accounting. you only need financial for regular business majors but it probably looks good if you take it.

@maheen
what school do you go to? its in the states right? why do you need to know calculate your credits?

Glad to see this thread revived.

I attend a private lac in PA. I am new to the US education system. I want to know if I’ll be able to meet NYU’s requirement of 30-32 credit hrs.

@MAHEEN11

If you refer back you’ll see how to calculate how many credit hours you will have.

HIS* 101 Western Civilization I 3 S.H

S.H = Semester Hours

Meaning you’ll most likely have 3 hours of lecture per week for that course. Therefore you will have accumulated 3 credits.

You have to check your course catalog. In it you will find each course and how many credits each course has. I know you listed your classes but it really does not make sense. For example:

I have never seen a school offer 5 credits for taking Elementary Spanish. It is very normal to see 3 credit classes. This means the class meets 3 hours every week, usually 2 days a week. Once you start getting into higher levels of math and sciences you’ll see 4 credits offered. But to reiterate, I have never seen that high of a credit value for an introductory language course.

As I stated check your course catalog or if you can provide a link to the catalog, I would be more than willing to assist you.

@maheen
i think it’d be simple if you tell us what term you will be applying for. if you applied this spring, i do not think you will fulfill the credit requirements. I think the general policy is that first semester freshman are not eligible as transfers regardless of AP/IB credits. you will be eligible to transfer next fall. (stern doesn’t accept spring transfers anyways)

reason is simple: you won’t have any official grades if you apply this spring. they need at least 1 semester of grades (not midterm reports).

try to take a intermediate level micro econ course, and you’ll be set in terms of credits and pre-req courses. (maintain a 3.7+, good reqs and essays should make you really competitive)

LACs typically don’t have business or accounting courses (and you don’t need them b/c you will be transferring as a sophomore, but if you are really set on NYU i think you should change your spring semester schedule to:

-elementary spanish 2
-intermediate micro econ
-writing
-statistics (w/ calc)

and if your college requires 32 credits for graduation and you will have 8 by the end of the spring - that is a normal courseload and you won’t have any trouble transferring next fall. Most colleges calculate units differently and I think that’s the problem. otherwise you would have to stay 4 years at your current college to transfer as a sophomore to NYU lol haha

and most of the colleges i know give more units even for intro language courses so I don’t think that is weird. their lectures are typically longer than regular classes.
