***Official Thread for 2016 BSMD applicants***

Most of the programs have minimum MCAT requirements of 30 or 31 (old score format). Is there any correlation to any of the HS test scores: SAT, SAT2, or ACT’s? Is reaching this MCAT score more like getting 2100’s in SAT or more like 2350’s? Trying to judge how big of a hurdle this is. Do some BS/MD students drop out because they could not make the minimum MCAT score required?

@penkid the MCAT is a whole different beast from the sat lol

@penkid, the MCAT exam tends to be different than that SAT/ACT when it comes to content (obviously) and format, especially with all the test prep options out there. I thought the SAT was more “unfair” in the sense that it’s not really taught during the high school curriculum even with all AP courses. It’s something to study for separately on top of all your HW from school.

You prepare for the MCAT a lot more by taking the required prerequisites: General Biology I & II, General Chemistry I & II, etc. I think a 30/31 (I realize this is the old scale where the perfect score is 45), is reasonable assuming you study well and put forth good effort. It’s about the average MCAT, if you compared all medical school matriculants (those who actually enrolled into med school) across the country.

I am only using SAT as an example and not saying MCAT is anything similar at all. If you take any standardized test and you are scoring xxx, most likely on any other standardized test, you will be in the same range (does not matter what test it is or how different it is). That is what I was trying to figure out by asking what scale is 30/31 range is in.

@penkid, sorry but your statement of “If you take any standardized test and you are scoring xxx, most likely on any other standardized test, you will be in the same range (does not matter what test it is or how different it is),” is just not true, whether you were referring to the SAT or the ACT, or any other standardized exam taken in high school.

There is nothing in the literature in which there is some type of pseudoconversion scale where you can give a particular SAT/ACT and be able to validly predict (within a range) how you’d do on the MCAT. That just does not exist, unfortunately.

Even though many combined programs do require minimum MCAT scores, there are still many combined programs that do not require minimum MCAT scores:

GWU, Northwestern, UMKC, NJMS with many affiliated colleges, Albany with RPI/Siena/Union, Sophie Davis, Rochester, Case Western, Brown, East Carolina U,Toledo, The Commonwealth MC, U of Pitt, Virginia Commonwealth, U of Texas SWMC.

Some programs have very low minimum MCAT scores:

NEOMU 24, U of Texas (Galveston) 24, Ponce 20, Meharry 24, Wayne State with Northern Michigan U 24, Texas A & M 25, Nebraska 24, New Mexico 22, Howard 24.

Please check the latest/updated MCAT requirements directly from these programs.

In terms of statistics, according to Association of American Medical Colleges 2014 average gpa and MCAT scores of Asian matriculants were 3.73 and 32.8, which are higher than minimum requirement to advance to medical schools in most of combined programs.

I just want to stress that these combined programs are very diverse, and I can’t stress the importance of teasing out these differences when one is applying to these programs.

Good luck everyone!!

@Upstream Thank you for the MCAT info. If time permits could you please post MCAT score requirement for the following:
Baylor/Baylor
BU
Drexel/Drexel
OU
Rice/Baylor
Temple
UMiami
UTHealth (UH)

I looked up a couple:

Baylor/Baylor: 500-507
BU: 80th percentile
Drexel: 506
OU: Need average GPA and MCAT score of last year’s admitted class

anyone know if BU is still sending out interview requests?

@medprograms the 12th is their last interview date, so probably not, but it still might be possible

Good luck to penn state Jeff interview date this wed

Dress professional
Smile
Explain who you are and why

anyone know when the penn state interview will end on Wed?

@GoldenRock There was a formal presentation to both students and parents at the beginning for about an hour. She didnt give admissions stats on the 40 that were present, but she did give numbers for the entire pool. I only remember stats for Drexel/Drexel and Rosemont/Drexel. If I remember correctly,
… for Drexel/Drexel… 600 applied/120 are interviewed/~50 accepted
… for Rosemont/Drexel… 30something applied/12 interviewed/~6 accepted

Stuck in traffic on my way back from Boston…

Does anyone know if the Penn State Jefferson interview will be pushed back because of the snow?

is HPME still sending out invites?

@bearchichi thank you very much.
@Xingkari I don’t think it will get pushed back. They are expecting snow in Tuesday and not much. There is no snow on Wednesday the day of the interview.
@tunetheday I am thinking more like 3-4 pm. They have a cookie hour at the end. So I assume by 3-4 pm.

Wow. Did they say anything about how many matriculate to undergrad?

@texaspg I’m sure they did, but I don’t remember because it didn’t apply to me. I’m sure someone else remembers though.

@ymehkri Thanks for the information.

@texaspg Per AAMC/MSAR web site, 38 matriculants for Drexel/Drexel, 1 for Lehigh/Drexel, 7 for Villanova/Drexel. But don’t know that info is for 2015 or 2014 or which year. Could not find any info in Drexel web site.
