Official Thread for Transfer Applicants to Michigan- Winter 2016

Hi @zahnet , there was a previous post about transferring as a freshman:

“In 2014, 66 students were transferred into UMich as freshman, 435 in sophomore, 413 in junior, and 15 in senior.”

UMich seems to prefer Sophomore & Junior transfers. However, that doesn’t means it’s not worth applying! Even if you are rejected, you can reapply once you have more credits.

I submitted my app last night, and they should have all my transcripts and stuff already! I’m a little nerve wrecked but so, so happy to not have the “Common App Anxiety” hanging over my head… Best of luck to everyone!!!

Applying for Winter 2016. Application is in for the 3 rd time. Deferred and wait listed Freshman year fall 2014. Applied again for following fall 2015… Not admitted. (Guessing for not enough credits).

Stats: In state

4.0 GPA entire freshman year from another 4 year university.

12 AP from high school.

30 ACT.

Completed 34 credits. 14 pending
I hope this is enough credits…

Since it is rolling admission for transfer students do you think there is a chance for a decision before the October 1 st deadline?

I

does anyone know if it is a real benefit to get your application in early as a transfer?

Where do Sophmore transfers generally live?

@NYNY22 It depends on room availability but basically any dorms that sophomore is eligible to.

Heyy I am an international student in MSU and applying to LSA Winter 2016, I am wondering if anyone can chance me! UMich is really my dream school. I applied as transfer last Fall and got rejected because I didn’t have enough credits … anyways I am so anxious right now.

College GPA: 3.61 (MSU Honors college)
(my gpa is bad…took some honors classes and high level math courses, gonna apply to LSA econ and/or financial math major, almost finished all the prerequisites for those 2 majors plus some core courses)

52 credits completed after this Fall ( 36 completed and 16 pending, almost all of them are transferable according to the LSA transfer credit equivalencies)

HS GPA: 3.46 ( went to a HS in the US)

TOEFL: 102

Tons of activities and some interns on/off campus

fair essays

Will have 1 letter of recommendation from a MSU prof

Good luck to everyone in this thread!

I’m not going to be applying for transfer until probably the Fall 2017 semester, but had questions that I thought would be best served here. I’m the first person in my family since either side of my parents came to the US in the 1910s to go for a bachelor’s degree, so I’m a bit at a loss for people to ask questions to LOL

I attend OCC. I have been enrolled since Fall 2013, with a 3.85 GPA, but have taken very few credits. Approximately 15 credits were received through AP testing, and 15 more taken at OCC for 30 total. The reason for few credits had to do primarily with focus on a fully-accredited vocational/trade school I attended in January 2015. I finished JUST outside those chosen for a job and will be returning in January 2016 to try again. I had to skip winter 2015 semester and will be skipping winter 2016 semester as a result… I’d rather not say exactly what the job is, however if I am selected for it (and my odds are quite high the second go-around) I would be one of only about 220 with the very elite job in the world. I would continue going to school despite the job. It would look very good on an app. It’s complicated, just go with it lol.

This fall semester I am taking 15 credit hours… Bio, Math, Abnormal Psych, Pol-Sci, PE… I am looking to be accepted in the Mental Health/Social Work Associate’s program, and graduate with an AAS in Mental Health/Social Work in Winter 2017. I would take 18 credits in Fall '16 (Two MHA, Stats, Science) and 17 in Winter '17 (Two MHA, Required Psych, and a four-credit transferable class), giving me 55 transferable credits when I applied to LSA for a BA in Psychology. I would also have the MTA endorsement FWIW.

My math is not hot. I have a W (my only one) in a College Algebra course. I hadn’t taken a serious math course since Junior year of high school despite my pretty good ACT score on the math. My COMPASS test put me in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra this year, a non-transferable course. I will be taking Statistics next fall, which does transfer and satisfies my MTA requirement.

HS Stats
3.2 UW GPA
3.5 W GPA
28 ACT Composite (32 E, 30 M, 26 R, 23 S)
Fairly competitive school

My EC’s range from good (serve on BOD w/500 volunteer hours/year at large nonprofit) to fantastic (the above job), though admittedly it’s a fairly short list.

UMich is, and always has been, the dream school. I was rejected (rightfully so) out of HS. What are my chances, assuming I keep up the good work in college? Will my odd time off make a difference? Will my math shoot me in the foot? What should I work on most to increase my chances? Am I asking too many questions?

Thanks in advance.

I’m currently a freshman at the honors college at University of Arizona and wanted to transfer to the College of Engineering at Michigan for Winter 2016. I checked and the 6 AP’s I took in high school give me 26 credits at UofM, does that mean I can apply as a sophomore transfer? Also can anyone chance me for Winter 2016?
HS Stats:
3.3 UW GPA
3.8 W GPA
34 ACT Composite (35 E, 34 M, 34 R, 34 S)
6 AP’s scored 4 on 4 of them, 5 on 2 of them

EC’s:
Cross Country and Track all 4 years of HS
A couple visual art awards
National Hispanic Recognition Award
AP Scholar with Distinction
Dad and Grandpa went to UofM
OOS

I’m hoping on a 4.0 GPA this semester at UofA.
Also since I was waitlisted and then rejected for Fall 2015 at Michigan, should I even apply for Winter 2016 or wait until Fall 2016 to have more college stats and EC’s?
Thank you so much!

These are great questions for the admission dept. You can use the email or use call line. It may be better to wait till you have completed your freshman year but worth a shot to begin another application. It is possible to get in before sophomore or during sophomore year but more difficult.

@spotted from what I’ve seen the college of Engineering does not even consider people who do not have the prereqs done for them. Because you’re a freshmen, i’d guess you don’t. Secondly, I’ve seen on previous transfer threads people get denied who DID have the prereqs, but because those classes were from an OOS school, they differed slightly for UM’s curriculum and didn’t transfer.

You can see the prereqs for Engineering on their website.

You might consider applying LSA and then transferring to Engineering after a year or so at UM. Your freshman status will probably not help your chances for Winter, but you can reapply every semester no problem. Don’t be surprised if you don’t get in for Winter, not many freshmen do.

AP credits will not be used in GPA calculation. For transfer students, they need to evaluate primarily your college GPA while you have none yet. If they use your HS GPA and test score for evaluation, you are not so impressive for CoE either. It would be better to apply after your finished your first semester (or even second semester) with good GPA from college.

how do credits from the quarter system work? How many semester credits is a normal 4 credit quarter class?

@billcsho the statistics you posted on the first page is for fall transfers though. I cannot find any statistics for Winter transfer for University of Michigan.

@FromTheVille The numbers are from the almanac and it should include both semester transfers. Otherwise, there would not be hard to have any freshmen transfer in Fall.

When do the decisions come out?

Applicants could start hearing as early as next week based on previous years winter transfer threads. From what I have learned the transfer apps are reviewed on a rolling basis. If your app is complete and reviewed we could hear any day.

Fingers crossed !

The only applicants who will hear within the next week or two are those who have previously submitted an app to Michigan. For the rest, it should be 6-8 weeks after all of your materials have been processed.

Just for reference, I was accepted this morning. Found out on Wolverine Access, got the email several hours later. Submitted my app on 9/17. Applied to Ross last year but was rejected. For background purposes:

Currently attend a top 25 university, 3.55 GPA. OOS applicant. Significant internship/EC leadership experience.

I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten in, and wish you all the best!

I am a Wolverine! So excited I cannot think straight! Found out on Wolverine Access yesterday! (My stats are at the beginning of this thread). I can honestly say that this CC site has been a wealth of information. It helped through a myriad of application questions and the posters offer support with their own stories to…The University of Michigan.

I literally have to pinch myself… I am going Blue!!

Congratulations @Grape12 @sas1995 did you contact the admissions department at all regarding your application?
