Senior year course load:

AP English: 80 first quarter
Intro to Calculus M3: 84 first quarter
Physics: 85 first quarter

highly competitive public school, from CT

good luck to everyone else :)

Accepted!! So happy, Tulane’s my first choice. 29 on the ACT (but with a really good English score) and a 3.23 UW 3.77 W. sounds low, but my high school is extremely rigorous and Tulane LOVES it. I’d say 20+ got accepted out of maybe 30 EA applications this year.

strong Why Tulane essay–nothing fabricated here as it truly is my top choice, and I believe a pretty strong personal essay as well. lots of extra currics, probably really good recommendations, and a few extra pulls like a homestay in France, class at BC over the summer, and a unique award from last year about leadership. I also showed a tonnn of interest in the school by going to all the local info sessions and staying in contact with my admissions counselor. additionally, I submitted an art portflio too.

anyways, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get some extra $$. I didn’t get any merit aid and I’m not sure what’s gonna happen with FA, so what should I do? I really really wanna go to Tulane, but I can’t if I don’t get enough money. advice please? thanks!

I don’t think there is anything you can do about merit aid with your stats, but FA might surprise you. Just depends on your family’s situation. You won’t know until mid to late March though.

The other thing you can do is apply for the community service scholarship. Top award is $15,000. A strong record of service can go a long way here, although I think they still look at your academic strength as well. But certainly worth a shot.

“staying in contact with my admissions counselor”

What would be the best way to keep in touch with my admissions counselor?

The admissions office says either email or phone, but I think email is better for this kind of situation.

@jmplayer-- throughout the whole process I made sure she didn’t forget about me. I asked questions every so often about certain requirements, if my new scores would get there on time, about an art supplement, etc. I tried not to be annoying as most of my questions were genuine ones, but I definitely did it with intent.

@fallenchemist-- you’re probably right, I’m just concerned about not being able to go due to lack of aid. do you know if they have any art scholarships? or from your experience have you noticed if they give pretty strong need based financial aid?

livk128, I am not fallenchemist, though I do know from my d’s experience with financial aid that Tulane doesn’t promise to cover 100% of need, but they usually do cover in the 90%+ of need, and they don’t offer loans for tuition.

They will offer grants and need based scholarships for tuition. If your need is greater than the tuition, then you may be offered a loan for room/board/fees.

Thanks bajamm. You probably know more about this than I.

I am not aware of any art scholarships. To be sure, You should ask that of both the financial aid office and Carole Haber, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts.

ishkaan - would I be correct in assuming you did not complete the “Why Tulane” question or attend any Tulane local events and/or visit the campus? With your stats, I would think (and I am sure Tulane is thinking the same thing) that you are using Tulane as a backup school and are hoping for Ivy or a similar, higher ranking school. Nothing really wrong with that, but if true you cannot blame Tulane for saying “eh, we can wait and see how the class shapes up before making a decision on this guy who probably won’t come anyway”. Again, not criticizing, just explaining.

You are right in that I did not complete the “Why Tulane.” Which in hindsight was a bad decision (I just had to get the application submitted in time so I could apply for the DHS). I am applying to several other schools none of which are Ivy because I know that even if I did get in there, paying for it would be a whole other obstacle(being middle class sucks when it comes to college). I REALLY do love Tulane and it has grown to be number one on my list of out of state colleges over the past few months of the college search. I haven’t been able to visit because my parents told me I should wait to visit colleges until I have a pretty good chance of being able to pay for it (to make paying for the trip down there worth it I suppose). And I have checked for local events but there aren’t that many opportunities to go to one in the part of Arkansas I live in. But I agree with what you’re saying and I am just hoping that they will consider me for the DHS because that is the only chance that I have at going to this AMAZING school!!!

Did you see the posting I did in the thread about being deferred where I quoted the blog of Jeff Schiffman from Tulane admissions? In there he talks about how you can still write a “Why Tulane” essay. PM me if you have questions about this.

Question for all you kids who were accepted or deferred, did you apply just EA or Single Choice EA? Just wondering if it made a difference.

My D chose to apply SC to give her whatever advantage it does, and her acceptance letter went out on Nov. 11th - about 5 days after the app was complete. She had toyed with the idea of applying to other EA schools and decided since Tulane was her true #1 to put all her eggs in the Tulane basket. Judging from the strong stats of some of the deferred kids, I’m guessing it did give her a leg up.

Thoughts?

My daughter was accepted to Tulane EASC with the $17,000 merit aid offer. While we are thrilled she’s accepted, she’s still waiting to hear RD from UVA (in state) and UNC (oos). Chances are obviously greater for her UVA admittance than for UNC, but UVA may be her 3rd choice. From the $$ standpoint and school reputation, UVA would be a value hard to pass up.

Does anyone know whether Tulane ever increases their merit offer amounts? Even with the $17k and possibly some need-based aid, Tulane would leave us in lots of debt. Looking here, the difference between students getting $17 and $27k offers is not clear to me. She did visit Tulane last spring and speak briefly with an admissions counselor, but she did not stay in touch with him. Any suggestions?

Received the 27k scholarship and acceptance into the honors college. (So did another student from my school if that interests anyone)

mamaoffour: The difference in students that get $17,000 or $22,000 or $25,000 or $27,000 is by and large stats driven, meaning standardized test scores and GPA/class rank. There are no doubt other factors such as strength of schedule, but mainly they look at those factors. I don’t know if they use a grid exactly, but I know there are other schools that do exactly that, plot the GPA and test scores and see what scholarship results from those factors.

Yes, Tulane will occasionally bump up an award, especially if there is a new factor such as straight A’s this semester, higher test scores after taking the SAT/ACT again, or something else extraordinary that is academically related. I have never heard of being bumped more than 1 level, which in her case would mean $22,000 per year. Which would be nice, of course.
