[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?:nope
[] Intended Major: Applied statistics

[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths: well-rounded; i don’t think i lack in any criteria but im not stellar in any criteria either
[] Weaknesses: i guess nothing stood out
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: 2 recruited athletes from my school (for past 5 years, I have not seen more than 2 kids get into the same Ivy League college from my school), Korean International pool, nothing much stood out
[/li]

[/ul][ b]General Comments:**
Hey, first, sincere congratulations to all who got accepted. And those who were deferred/ rejected, you guys know better than anyone that you will get into a good college.

But I’d like to ask some questions to CCers and it will be nice if you could offer words of advice.

I really want to get into top Ivy League schools, and in order to do so, I think the best way is to stand out from the pool. I have some talents that are not visible on my application, such as beatboxing, doing the rubik’s cube and performing freestyle soccer tricks. How can I show these talents to the admission officers? Will a video supplement be a good idea? or are my talents not ‘professional’ enough for a video supplement?

Also, if anyone knows an international Korean student who got into Yale SCEA, please let me know. I have visited multiple forums and I haven’t seen one international student from Korea who got into Yale. thxx

Any other advices about my application in general will greatly help.

Good luck to every senior on CC!

CC totals updated with two more rejects reported after post #207:

Accept 50 (33.9%)
Defer 91 (59.9%)
Reject 11 (7.2%)

Compare this to Yale’s official numbers:

Accept: 761 (14.5%)
Defer: 2952 (56%)
Reject 1497 (28.5%)

The huge discrepancy in percentages between Yale’s real numbers and the CC reported numbers for both the accepts and rejects is a perfect example of the folly of using self-reported results on CC to determine any trends or draw any conclusions about what is really happening out there.

Decision: Accepted

College Confidential was great help. Did not know what HYPS or URM meant before joining the forum. Posting on behalf of my son. Good luck to all. :)

I disagree. The disproportionate distribution does not mean that the stats of those within each group on CC are not indicative of those overall.

"wantstoleave…glad you’re so excited about your acceptance, i totally understand, i was 1st gen college myself 2 decades ago, and was thrilled to get in, honored to attend. don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but i do want you to consider something.

re: scores…if an applicant takes a bunch of SAT 2’s, and then reports (officially or not) ANY of them, then yale expect to see ALL of them. because yale does not accept score choice, and they ask their applicants not to use score choice. holding some scores back, and self-reporting one, that’s nor their intent when they instituted their no score choice policy.

they rely on everyone to follow that guideline. just something to think about.

because you can’t really say that scores don’t always matter if you, in truth, held back some scores that you thought would hurt you, don’t you think?

if I have misunderstood your score strategy in any way, i apologize."

Thanks so much ilmkmom! I still can’t believe it. And it’s no problem, I think the way I wrote it sounded like how you thought. On the common app, it says to list your highest scores so I listed my AP’s and my US history SAT subject test. My transcripts, however, had all my scores which included my SAT I and my SAT IIs. So in the end, Yale saw all my scores. Hope that clears it up!

No. If the CC stats indicated the overall trend for Yale SCEA they would be in agreement (within reasonable accuracy) with the Yale numbers, which they are not.

The Yale numbers by definition ARE the overal trend for Yale SCEA since they include the entire population that applied. CC’s reported numbers are merely an inaccurate and unverifiable sample.

A person relying on CC’s numbers might reasonably conclude that the trend is that Yale accepts about twice as many EA applicants as it rejects, when in fact the opposite is true.

Haven’t heard about any data other than that old table, but regardless of the numbers, the point remains that Yale has no reason to have Tuft’s Syndrome. Also, I’d like to see this new data since I’m curious to know how Harvard vs. Yale has changed over time.

is it just me or did an overwhelmingly large number of those deferred take the ACT rather than the SAT?

and an evidently large number of those accepted seem to be any ethnicity but caucasian.

.
Sorry, but there are dozens of posts on this thread (including yours) and other results threads that do not give results. CC normally removes only posts that violate the Terms of Service in some way and these do not. A CC member establishing a thread can certainly encourage a specific type of response but such a thing is not normally enforced.

You missed my message. I agreed with you on the point that, clearly, CC does not offer an accurate indication of the distribution of the results, which is what the example in your third paragraph relates to. This does not, however, imply that the data are useless with respect to any possible conclusion about Yale’s evaluation of the general applicant pool, as you asserted. Here’s a hypothetical scenario:

Accepted: 45 (SAT range: 2310-2380)
Deferred: 158 (SAT range: 2060-2390)
Rejected: 105 (SAT range: 1750-2240)

We cannot conclude anything about the distribution of acceptances, deferrals, and rejections in the general applicant pool because we have reason to believe that there are relevant confounding variables: specifically, the self-selection on CC and response bias.

But we might, with an acceptable degree of confidence, conclude that applicants with sub-2300 scores have an extremely low chance of being accepted because there is no reason to believe that any confounding variable would non-causally link with that trend.

Are you sure? What’s the difference between the two? None of the sources I’ve referenced distinguish between the two, and the couple definitions of “confounding variable” that I have seen seem to comprise “response bias” in their generality. (If I’m ignorant in this respect, I apologize but nonetheless defer some blame to the poor quality of my online class! :))

In any case, I was trying to indicate that there were relevant non-causal factors at play in the distribution examples, whereas in other cases there are none.

Decision: Deferred

[] Volunteer/Community service: 50 hr unpaid internship at Harry S. Truman Library and Museum.

[] Counselor Rec: Again, don’t know.
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t submit an additional rec.
[] Interview: Good, but not great.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 100k-150k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation College Student
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely my essays, and possibly my recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: Everything else?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I don’t have the GPA or class rank to get an immediate acceptance.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I was honestly ecstatic to be deferred. I’m just not a good applicant on paper; the one thing I do have is writing ability, which is probably the only thing that stopped them from tossing me into the reject pile! I don’t think I’ll get in in April, but this gives me a little hope for the other schools I’ve applied to. Also, my friend from my school got in; she has a 34 ACT, super high GPA and class rank, tons of community involvement, leadership skills… I’m so proud of her. She’s the first person from my school to get accepted to an Ivy.

Google HYPSM cross-admit and you will see it. This year could be the first year that Stanford beats Harvard to have the lowest admit rate. We have to wait till next Jan to see the numbers.

What makes you think we magically know the correct distribution of the SAT scores with any more accuracy than we know the distribution of the acceptances? Both are derived from the same self-reported sample and subject to the same response bias.

What makes you think that lower-scoring acceptees would be less proportionately likely to respond than higher-scoring acceptees? You would have to make that argument in order to undermine the conclusion. In order to call any conclusion about acceptance/deferral/rejection distributions into question, you would have to argue for voluntary response bias and the presence of higher-than-average stats of CCers; now that you could do.
