Posting for daughter - DANIC10 - DEFERRED

Hey, did anyone with art as their intended major post in this thread yet? I haven’t checked mine yet since I’m waiting for my mom to get home, but I wanted to know if any other artists have had any luck.

Oh and good luck everyone! And congrats to everyone who was accepted. :)

Why you think you were deferred: I barely qualify to get in and I may not fit in

General Comments:
I was expecting either a miracle exceptance or else a rejection, not a deferral. At this point I will probably be attending University of Vermont instead, Yale lost me, even if I get in later, it’s going to be a hard sell to lure me back in.

Pixargirl:
Nikkor got accepted. He/she was into photography, I think.
I got deferred. I listed visual art as a major I was interested in.

Good luck to everyone, whether rejected, deferred, or accepted; I know that you all will end up someplace great.

… it seems like almost no one that applied SCEA plays annnnnyyyy sports (besides the recruited athletes)

call me old school, but i feel like the admissions officers probably frown a bit at the lack of sports participation in borderline applicants. freakin get outside every once in a while you guys… lol

I’ve played sports for all 4 years, and I’m not a recruit.

But you did say “almost,” so nvm.

@gahsicles: Thanks for the info!

Deferred. Post stats later.

BTW, congrats to all accepted students, you truly earned it. Deferred, I’ll see you at camp Yale (fingers crossed). Rejected students, remember these two things:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a future and a hope."
Jeremiah 29:11

You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need.

[] Weaknesses: Pretty scattered ECs, not a lot of leadership or community service, few major awards, no clear focus with what I want to do with my life
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I was a strong applicant number-wise, so they didn’t reject me. I think. Maybe? Whatever.
[/li]

Also, I had some updates about a national music competition that I did really well at, among other things, that I sent in right after Thanksgiving; however, I didn’t get a confirmation email until yesterday. It’s possible that the updates could have pushed it over the edge, but who knows? argh
[/ul]General Comments:
I’ve gotten over my initial disappointment. Getting accepted early without having saved the world or been hooked was a stretch from the beginning. Hopefully I’ll get lucky in April… four months from now…

[] Job/Work Experience: None really. Spent a summer as a research assistant at local university, but that’s it.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutor regularly through Physics Club, various NHS things as well. Didn’t put any of this on my app though.
[] Summer Activities: NFL Nationals, CONA, summer research internship, forensics camp
[] Essays: Good, I guess? They really emphasized my multi-cultural background/interest in diversity. In retrospect, I felt like they overlapped too much and discussed the same parts of my personality. I really liked my Why Yale.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t see.
[] Additional Rec: From my research mentor.
[] Interview: It was pretty good. Kinda awkward, but mainly because it was my first one ever.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, multi-culturalism? No clue.
[] Weaknesses: Very spread out interests, Asian
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Luck of the draw.
[/ul]General Comments:
This is seriously a dream come true. There are a lot of deferred and rejected applicants out there with fantastic credentials. You guys *will get in somewhere good.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2350 (single-sitting)
[] ACT: Did not take.
[] SAT II: 800, 800, 780
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): UW: 3.96 W: 4.65-ish

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Team (Co-Captain), Math Enrichment Program, Literary Magazine (Editor-in-Chief), Mock Trial, intra-HS Honor Society (really hard to get into).
[] Job/Work Experience: None.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring, helping at school library, ushering at plays, etc.
[] Summer Activities: Prestigious writing programs; taught English to foreigners; catching up on TV!
[] Essays: Common App essay could definitely only be written by me. Very creative and flows really nicely. Supplemental essay also pretty unique/creative. I think my essays were one of the highlights of my app, though Why Yale was perhaps rather generic.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Waived rights. I’d assume pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Doesn’t really know me but enthusiastic and wanted me to get in.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Eh. Decent, not extraordinary.
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[]Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
[]Intended Major: Undecided.
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Huge, very competitive and well-regarded public magnet
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: High
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing awards, essays, SATs
[] Weaknesses: Lack of other strong ECs? Nothing really stood out I guess.
[] Why you think you were deferred: Like I said, I guess nothing stood out. It’s frustrating not knowing whether I was like in the top 10% of deferred applicants or closer to the bottom. Did I just miss getting accepted, or was I barely taken out of the reject pile? I told my mom I sorta wished they deferred fewer kids, but, as she responded, and as is true–of course I wouldn’t feel that way if they DID defer fewer and I were rejected![/ul]
General Comments:
My friend was rejected and it was sort of awkward. She was crying… When I saw Silverturtle got deferred I actually was like “Silverturtle–no way!” out loud. (I really don’t mean to make you feel bad silverturtle; it’s just that you’ve done so much for the CC community, are very intelligent and articulate, and I’m sure would enrich Yale.) After seeing how many amazing applicants were deferred and rejected, I don’t feel so bad. I’m sure we’ll ALL end up somewhere amazing for us, and a year from now, at our new schools, we’ll be having a great time–whether we’re at Yale or not. I wish everyone luck in the rest of their admissions process and congratulations to the accepted students! I told my aunt I wasn’t devastated about it at all, and she said, “Good, you shouldn’t be. Now you just have to do more apps, right?” I responded, “Yeah–that’s the devastating part!!!”

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200: 760 CR, 670 M, 770 W
[] ACT: 31
[] SAT II: 720 Lit, 670 Math II, 620 Chem (I don’t want to talk about it)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/430ish
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chemistry (4), Lang/Comp (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): not offered
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit/Comp, Speech & Debate, AP Spanish IV, AP Calculus AB, AP US Gov, Current World Issues, AP Psych, Physics
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended…
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 4 years XC (3 letters), National Honor Society (Secretary both years), Church, Medical Explorers (VP), Respect Team, Link Crew, Senior Class Treasurer, Hi-Q (Secretary)
[] Job/Work Experience: very few hours Ushering at a local performing arts center in my freshman year… so basically nothing
[] Volunteer/Community service: about 130 hours
[] Summer Activities: Volunteer Counselor at Music Camp for elementary school kids, various other volunteering… nothing really exciting, unfortunately.
[] Essays: My personal statement was pretty average. However, I thought both of my actual essays were good-- I poured my heart and soul into the supplement essay. Why Yale was probably a little cheesy.
[] Teacher Recommendation: both of my Junior year AP teachers, both of whom I had a great relationship with; haven’t seen either
[] Counselor Rec: haven’t seen fully
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: n/a
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Political science
[] State (if domestic applicant): Washington state
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, not competitive at all; my test scores are probably top 5 in my graduating class and I was one of two NMS Commended students; less than half of our class goes to college.
[] Ethnicity: White. I thought saying I was of Hispanic origin because I’m 1/16 Mexican would be a tad dishonest.
[] Gender: Female.
[] Income Bracket: about 80k.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope, unless a pretty rural location that is probably underrepresented counts at all… which I doubt it does.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, hopefully recommendations
[] Weaknesses: my school’s BS graduation requirement classes that sucked up my transcript, test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: It’s obvious looking at everyone’s stats that I wouldn’t be accepted; what I’m wondering is why I was even deferred… I think it’s pretty miraculous, and while obviously it wasn’t my first-choice outcome, I’m happy.
[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations, future Yalies! And seriously, I feel disgustingly inadequate reading about all of your awesomeness. As for me, I hope that my drastically more rigorous senior course load will work in my favor in this next round, but really I’m just ready to try to put it all out of my mind for a few months (not that I’ll succeed!). Also, please don’t laugh at my pathetic stats :)
