Overnight recommendation

I'm bringing my daughter to Tulane on 4/20 for DT. We were originally flying down and back in the same day. I am starting to second guess this decision from input on CC and am seriously considering biting the bullet with airline penalties and changing our return flight to the 21st, late in the day so D gets more of "the experience." Before I do so, I was hoping to get a recommendation of where to stay. Want to be sure I have accommodations before I extend our trip! I wasn't planning on renting a car so something that would be accessible by foot from Tulane or via street car would be great. I feel like I have seen hotels and bed/breakfasts mentioned here somewhere but "hotels" is not a thread topic so I'm having a hard time finding what I thought I saw a few months ago. Thanks for your help.

The Hampton Inn on St. Charles is close and has a Tulane rate (have to ask for it). The street car is right in front.

You can walk to Dante’s Kitchen from the campus (okay, I know, I’m sounding like a broken record on this one).

THX idad but they are already booked… Do you know anything about Audubon Park B&B? The have a Tulane rate as well at $95/night (which I thought seemed really good) but wasn’t sure if they were too far off the beat and path or not in a nice area… 6022 Pitt St - doesn’t seem too far from Charles, the campus or Magazine St. Ever heard of it?

Lots of good choices. The Hampton Inn on St. Charles is always a popular choice. Between the FQ and Tulane and right on the streetcar line. Tulane Jeff recently recommended a place near the FQ, called the International House [International House Hotel | Luxury Boutique Hotel in New Orleans | French Quarter Hotel](http://ihhotel.com/) He said to be sure and get the Tulane rate. Heltonmom had a good experience at Maison St. Charles except that the breakfast was nothing special (it isn’t at the Hampton Inn either) [New Orleans Garden District Hotel | Quality Inn and Suites New Orleans](http://www.maisonstcharles.com/) AVHS Dad had good things to say about the Chateau Bourbon and got a very good rate of just a little over $100 per night on Expedia. That should get you started.

Excellent! Thanks. I’ll get to work! :)

nj_mom: I don’t know much about that B&B, but it is certainly close to campus. Looks to be a short cab ride or a decent walk. It also looks to be fairly close to Domilise’s Po-Boys, really good; 5240 Annunciation St. (The building may be a little off-putting but don’t let that deter you.) Am I fixated on food?

Something on the street car sounds like fun and would add my D’s experience. She will have just visited Auburn the week before so I want to make sure she gets the “full flavor” of both places. International House doesn’t look like it’s right on Charles but Maison St. Charles is. Both have availability and are close in price. One location more preferable than the other? I’m thinking other than Tulane, we’d want to visit Magazine St and the French Quarter. Anything else a must see or place we must eat? lol (that one’s for you, idad!)

Maison St Charles is the winner at a Tulane rate of $89/night! Wow. That’s great! Thanks for your help. Now I’m ready for food suggestions!

Food suggestions? Way way way too many choices, lol. Of course you know if you don’t eat at Dante’s kitchen idad will track you down and… and… well I don’t know what he would do but don’t tempt him.

Camillia Grill is very Tulane, and I would recommend it for breakfast before going to campus, if that fits your schedule. There is a restaurant that we like very much not far from Camillia Grill call Jacques-Imo’s (locally pronounced Jackimo’s) for dinner. If you want dinner downtown or in the Quarter, so very many choices. Depends on how fancy and price to a great degree. Help us narrow it down. Would also help to know your new schedule as far as when you land, when you plan to be on campus, and when you leave.

Ok - new schedule: land 9:20am in NOLA on 4/20. DT starts at 8am with a tour at 9am and student panel at 10:15. We will likely arrive on campus at 10, missing the tour. If I read on CC between now and then that the student panel has gotten better, we will go…otherwise we may skip. The schedule includes lunch with faculty, administrators and students at 11. Since we will miss the 9am DT tour, we’ll probably try to do the regular one at 2pm. From noon til 5 is optional but things we’d like to do (now that we’re sticking around) is a class visit or two, model dorm visit, and q&a with the deans. lewmin had offered that we could potentially meet his daughter who could give us a little tour and overview of the Hillel. That will likely be after 4:30 on this same day. So…dinner we are likely free. And the next day from breakfast on is completely open until our flight which leaves at 5:40pm on 4/21. In terms of the types of food…we love everything but “college student budget reality” is probably a little better for this trip in terms of where the kids usually go and can afford so she can see the “norm.” We’ll save the pricier restaurants for when we come and visit. Hope that helps narrow things down. Dante’s Kitchen is best for what meal do you think?

Did I mention Dante’s Kitchen? :)

Go to Camellia Grill for sure if you want to experience what us Tulane students eat. It’s my favorite inexpensive restaurant near campus  Make sure you order a freeze!

idad - Just lining up all of our dining options for our trip to Tulane tomorrow and ‘must eats’ and I sadly found out that Dante’s kitchen is no longer open for lunch daily (just Thurs and Fri) and they are closed Tuesday for dinner! I’m so sad we won’t be able to experience this place. I guess our only choice is to insist our daughter go to Tulane so we have to come back! lol

Looks like we’ll be fine with our other options though for Tuesday dinner, breakfast and lunch Wednesday - Camella Grill, Jacques-Imo’s and Domilisi’s Po Boys - and of course dining hall food dare we have it more than once! lol Do any of these places take or require reservations?

Jacque-Imo’s usually has seating outside (very limited) for those who don’t make reservations but it is always good to call the day of in case they’re accepting.

JTulaneD - unless they changed their policy, I thought Jacques-Imo’s only took reservations for parties of more than 4. Happy to be corrected if this is now wrong.

That’s probably correct. I always have gone in groups of 4 or more so we always phone in just in case. I say it never hurts.

Thanks! Looking forward to our visit to Tulane and NOLA dining experiences. :)

Highly recommend you consider Jacques-Imo’s for a meal. It is in an area pretty convenient to Tulane and not part of the more traditional touristy zones. Very unique environment, great food too. When S took me to dinner when I visiting him at school, that was the place he chose.

The entire street was recently refurbished although I only saw it during “construction”.
I’ll bet it looks awesome now. Feels like a neighborhood, not a “city”.

Also, the student panel we attended when S did his Destination Tulane visit was the highlight and turned out to be the tipping point for making him decide to attend there. I honestly would give it a try. One of the best questions we heard asked was “What other schools were you admitted to and why did you decide on Tulane?” It really gave everybody a sense of how these current students compared other schools (and in S’s case covered some on his list). VERY helpful and the students were terrific–kids I’d like to know.

So I’m thinking Jacques-Imo’s for dinner tomorrow night. (Was also maybe thinking of going to the TU baseball game. Worth it if school spirit is of some interest to my D?) Then Wednesday…Camella for breakfast and Domilise’s PoBoys for lunch or to-go for our plane ride home. Good plan of attack?

Also, forgot to ask about the best way to get to these places. For dinner tomorrow night, I’m not sure if we’d go right from DT or go to the hotel first, but in either case, what do you recommend as our mode of transportation to Jaqcues-Imos? Can we walk from campus, take the street car to the end of St Charles and walk from there or cab it? Since I’m totally unfamiliar with the area I’m not sure which areas are safe to walk around at night.

Our hotel is on St Charles, so it looks like breakfast at Camella’s is just a street car ride away. Would you then walk back to campus from there or take the streetcar? Wasn’t sure how far it actually is… We have an appointment at the school at 10:30.

And if we end up doing Domilise’s Po Boys for a late lunch or to pick up dinner on the way to the airport, would you suggest a cab?

Thanks for your help!
