Penn App. - Q & A!

I didn't. I just put the title. It wouldn't hurt to write the question, I suppose, unless you're desperate for space...which actually means it will hurt. ;)

aaron, just specify whether you're answering 6a, 6b, or 6c. No need to write the actual prompt.

Q: i understand this, right? you can send an e-mail to teacher's so that they can fill out the rec online, yes? (with advance notice, of course)

And you SHOULD write in 6a/b/c on an online app? Word formatting makes me cringe :(

for the online essays, their system automatically puts essay response 1 and 2 and ur name on the top of the word doc u upload, for the second essay, i just but essay b so they would know which one i picked...if u do that make sure u put it in the center of the first line or a few lines down so it doesn't get covered up by their heading

26e, yes to your first question. CMH22888 has covered the second one.

6a, 6b, 6c refer to the options for the second question, the personal statement. There's three questions you can answer, so just distinguish which one you've picked.

Do you reckon it's allright to email the Penn Prof. you're "interested in doing research with" and asking them about research opporunities in their field, etc.?

maybe, but if it doesn't go swimmingly you could inadvertantly implode your chances. perhaps

Uh oh. I already sent in the online app without specifying 6a/b/c. Am I doomed?

I assume they'll figure it out with a big "217" on top, but I'm not sure...

LOL, what do you mean by swimmingly?

Dear Professor X,

I see you've researched on Y. What opporunities @ Penn are available in researching Y?

Something like that, no?

collegehopeful, you are most definitely not doomed. Your essay will be perfectly fine. It's the actual content that matters.

newyorker, that sounds good. Simple and sweet, and doesn't look suspicious or anything.

helix has it right.
swimmingly=good

26e: i tried emailing a prof! he didn't answer :( does this hurt my chances?

why u asking me?

no, unless you left your name, ssn, and ticked him off so bad he'd run over to the admissions office and told them not to let you in. in short: i doubt it. besides, it could take them a long time to answer. they're very busy

thought i might've inadvertantly imploded my chances! hehe... i inquired abt research opp n stuff ... tht was quite a while ago... he never replied!

i see. but yeah, you should be ok.

Just to make ourselves feel secure, what is everyone's safety school? I mean one of these safe, admission in the back of my pocket deals.

I figure It'll do some good to discuss an actual acceptance rather than possible rejection, lol.

And keep asking questions, this thread has been very helpful:)

So, my two safety school are University of Pittsbugh and Penn State. I should be hearing back from the schools in about 10 days, but it feels good to know I'm basically in somewhere!

my safety is U of Maryland but i won't hear from them until after i've heard from penn

Luckily, I'll hear from Pitt and Penn State before Penn, so I can sleep easy, even though I don't want to go to either Pitt of Penn State.

I tried so hard to love my safeties, and I would be satisfied going to them, but I want to go to a school I LOVE, not like.

CMH22888, how do you feel about U of Maryland?

honesty i hate it, college park is a horrible place to live, at least 25 of the girls from my school will end up there, and the basketball team isn't as good as it used to be

the only good thing about maryland is their honors programs

i am applying to other schools (g-town, uva, cornell, and some more) if i don't get into penn, but these are also competative schools so ultimately i might end up at maryland so i guess i better learn to like it :(

Oh crud... I didn't write 6a/b/c on top of my essay. I circled which essay I'm doing on the prior page, though. And it's pretty obvious which question I'm answering. Am I doomed?
