CMH, I feel the same. Penn State is just an extension of my high school; so many of our seiors got there. I do like their honors program, which I qualify for, but still, I honestly just don't want to end up there.

I completely agree about learning to like it though. The other schools which I'm applying to are also pretty selective - moderately selective. Who knows, I really could get rejected by all of them and end up at Penn State. Stranger things have happened. Hopefully, Penn will take me, and if not (knock on wood), I'll have to revise my list of schools a bit. (I'm applying to Georgetown too;))

astrid, you'll be fine. Since you circled the essay question, that's more than enough. It's the actual essay that matters.

God I feel so behind, I'm not even done mine!

Q: my pg 217 essay has nothing to do with penn, my personality, my academics, my profile, nothing. it's just somewhat amusing i guess, i like it. it's set on campus, and the title explains the situation, but it's a little esoteric. idk, good/bad? :?

also, i formatted it like a book, with the page # in the bottom right corner, and the title of the book & my name in the upper right. do i still need to write 6b on there?

I was wondering what the word limit on penn's essay is...they dont really specify...mine is aroudn 800 is that bad???
has anyone e-mailed adcoms about this

26e: I DO like Pitt, and I could see myself going there, just with not as much enthusiasm as Penn or another school, you know what I mean? My friends that go to Pitt love it, and I think I would be happy with their honors program, so I have nothing against it. It's just a feeling deep in my gut that just makes me LOVE Penn, though.

regarding your pg 217. Does is say something significant about you? If it's a witty piece of writing that's fun to read, that's great, but just make sure that it conveys something about you and why they should pick you over the thousands of other kids.
Really though, who am I to be giving advice. I'm sure you know what you're doing, jsut keep the purpose of the essay in mind.

dreaming_melancholy, I talked to the undergrad office about this, and they said that as long as an essay is reasonably formatted (normal margins, readable font, single space), the word count doesn't matter.

If you're within one page, you're good to go.

just look up the dept. you want to major in. look at the faculty list, read their articles/research, and right a short statement about why they interest you

I got a citation from the massachusetts state senate for having been elected to a student gov't day type thing.. I'm thinking about putting this under awards but how should I word it?

Official Citation from State Senate

Elected to Student Government Day

(Elected Representative to Student Government Day doesn't fit.. lol)

Any suggestions?

Plus.. would anyone be willing to read my essays and offer feedback (my biggest problem is cutting them down!) ?

collegehopeful: When you submit Part 1 of the application online, you also pay the application fee through Credit Card. You can also mail it, I just fond it more convenient to pay online right after I submitted part 1.

I don't think it's bad to include a resume. I have a book called Rock Hard Apps, by Katherine Cohen, who seems to be an authority of college admissions, and she recommends doing a resume. Just include relevant info, and make sure it's organized.

dw51688: I would say Official Citation from State Senate; sounds more official and important :)

I just got my confirmation of Part 1 being received by Penn, and now it's mentioning something about an initial Financial Aid form that has to be sent in...Does this form have to be sent in for the November 1 deadline also??

Thanks for clearing up the mystery - I should have realized that they make you pay at the end when you are submitting Part 1.

I have Rock Hard Apps. too. That book actually bugs me, because of the sample essays. I am a very good writer, but NO real HS student could write the essays in there. We are constantly told - use your own voice, adcoms can tell when your essays have been overedited - but books like this one set an impossible standard.

I agree, collegecountdown (sorry about the confusion, I referred to you as collegehopeful last time, blame my sleep deprivation). I think the book sets impossibly hard standards, and I don't think some of the essays were as great as they were made out to be.

cosmo, the financial aid form must be in by november 1 as well

One of my teachers writes outstanding recs, but for the Teacher Recommendation Form, he just wrote See attached instead of filling it out. Is this alright?

I was flipping through the pages, and did anyone answer Helix's question about putting SSN / Name / Birthday / or whatever on supplementary recs? Do we need to? Cause I have the same question.. heh..
