@hailtopitt1787 If I’ve already submitted my application and short essays, will my application/scholarship be judged off of these materials alone? I am wondering if the SAT test I took today will affect my admission/scholarship/honors college chances if I forgot to mention on the application I would be taking it again (today’s test). Thanks!
Hi guys, sorry to bother again as Pitt is my first choice and I’m getting super anxious of their decision.
I applied to A&S school - Psychology major
Am I most likely gonna be accepted to pitt’s other campuses if my SAT score is below their avgerage?
-However my GPA is 93.67 Unweighted , my school doesn’t do 4.0 scale.
-Did some ECs - clubs, volunteer work, and job experience.
-I believe I wrote a fairly good essay talking about my family background ( My parents never got married and have ---- another family himself, and how it affected my education and dailylife. )
In fact, I skipped school for 2 years and had to switch from a public school to a private school ( I wrote a 250 word ish paragraph explaining my education interruption )
So…will the low SAT score automatically put me in their regional campuses? or will my GPA, different background,and essay compensate for that low score?
Would be appreciated if someone can help me out, If anybody want more details can send me a message as it is kind of personal.
Thank you
@IamSleepy Any idea of what 93.67 correlates to on a 4.0 scale?
Without any knowledge of your academic rigor/performance, it’s difficult to suggest whether or not you will be admitted. Admissions do take into consideration issues at home. What were your SATs/ACTs? if you are just below their avg. 50% then I’d say you have a fair chance, all things considered.
@PAwind98
Hey thanks for reply!!
I have no idea but I believe 93.67 is probably around 3.9-4.0 , according to college board.
my freshman year was a 89.6 or something , then i cut school for 2 years. started as a sophmore in 2014 after switching school and had a 93.4 , then junior year i got 97.2 overall average.( i don’t know if they want the grades to be consistent or showing improvements. especially I cut school for 2 years.)
I’m in National Honor Society and Spanish NHS too.
I took Spanish 3 honors, Trig honors, and US hist honors in my junior year
Right now I’m taking English honors, Calc Honors, AP Stats, and AP Comp Sci A ( was supposed to take AP Spanish & AP Art History but got in schedule conflict.)
As for the SAT, my math is 580 and my CR&W is 530. I know it’s super duper low - 1110 total
but as pitt says its 2016 entering class profile the Middle 50 percent SAT score is between 1180-1360.
Just worrying about if I will get accepted to main campus with these low scores but unique family background and my situation. My essay explains it all too and I also wrote how I overcome all these and end up where I am now .
Thanks!
@IamSleepy Sure thing! I’m local, so I know a bit more than the average applicant, so I figured I’d share!
Your GPA is good; your schedule is good; you have decent extra curriculars. Your SAT is your only truly “weak” area. 3 things that can happen at this point, since you’ve already submitted your application:
- Admission to Main (It is certainly possible, remember 25% of students accepted have SATs lower than 1180(in A/S this number is actually 1160 so that’s good!) this is roughly 755 students!)
- Ask for midyear grades/SAT/ACT scores. Personally, I see this as the most likely of the 3 outcomes. Simply because you have slightly lower than average stats; they expect to see growth, especially since your essay explains why you’ve been set behind. I’d retake the SATs, or at least register for them now, as to expedite this process if it were to occur.
- You will be granted admission to the branch campus you have selected. I see this as the least likely of the 3, purely because of your personal situation. Admissions officers are human, and if you explained well, I don’t see a reason you wouldn’t be given a chance to prove yourself. If you are deferred to a branch campus, don’t worry! I know many kids, locally, choose to attend a branch campus for 1/2 years if their high school application is not up to par and transfer in(assuming they do well in the branch).
Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other concerns.
Did any one receive letters from Mayor and Chancellor? Do those lettera mean anything?
@PAwind98
Thanks for the replies again, it really help (: (: !
I only chose the Pittsburgh campus as my preference and I did not list any other campuses in my App, will they still put me in the other campuses ? or will they just going to reject me ? ( if that’s the case.)
thanks once again! really appreciate it!
@IamSleepy Per Pitt’s Website: https://oafa.pitt.edu/q-and-a/ you should be given a branch campus, whether or not you selected them. You will just have no “choice” in which one. Absolutely, glad to help!
@srk2017 I have not received anything yet, assuming this is because I applied 4 days ago xD. I am not familiar with a “Mayor’s” letter but the “Chancellor’s Scholarship” is something that I would love to receive. Basically, you have no cost of attendance. https://oafa.pitt.edu/financialaid/academic-scholarships/chancellors-scholarship/
Have you received either of these letters? Care to shine a light on the “Mayor” letter for me?
@PAwind98 at out school a 93.67 would be about a 3.75 I think.
I would see if you can send your new SAT score.
@PAwind98 …no…
@srk2017 is saying they received a letter from the Chancellor of the university. We got one of those too…it was a letter from the chancellor encouraging us as parents to encourage D to attend Pitt. It was NOT a scholarship letter like the one in the link you posted.
@carachel2 ahh, I see, thank you for the clarification!

Looks like merit scholarships are being sent out, received yesterday: 20k/year SSOE OOS
@m139pl - did you receive in the snail mail? If so, which state?
@m139pl. R u instate or out of state.
@rsmith0208 – it looks like the poster said OOS which means out-of-state.
@m139pl – congrats! Help out your fellow obsessors and post your stats (scores and rank) and when applied if you don’t mind?
We’re on east coast, 1590/1600 SAT 4.0 UW GPA, applied early
@m139pl congrats! Did the scholarship letter indicate any invitation to apply for full tuition or cost of attendance (I think it’s called the Chancellor scholarship)?
Pretty sure I got the same scholarship letter as @m139pl (20k for Chancellor’s Nominee w/ invitation to apply to the full Chancellor’s Scholarship?). The letter came via snail mail, and I’m also east coast and out of state (with basically the same stats). I applied on 9/17.
