Congrats @m139pl & @arose99. I am surprised that with 4.0 GPA and almost perfect SAT score you didn’t get full scholarship. What’s your weighted GPA and also what ECs did you mention in short questions?
@srk2017 @class0f2017 Thanks! Only snail mail so far for merit scholarship stuff, and my school doesn’t calculate weighted GPA (but my course load is 11 APs by the end of senior year + dual enrollment college classes + honors classes).
Looking at this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pittsburgh/1848718-class-of-2020-merit-scholarship-recipients-p1.html I’m a little confused? Maybe full scholarships are more competitive for Swanson? Or maybe they only award full scholarships through Chancellor’s (or other special scholarships) now?
My ECs are good but I almost wish Pitt had a common app-esque activities/awards section since I couldn’t work everything into the essays. Now I’m wondering what kind of scholarship Pitt offers for NMF…
@arose99 - I don’t believe PITT give importance to NMF. I do believe Swanson scholarships are more competitive. Also, looks like they award more and more full scholarships through Chancellor’s which has interview process also. I guess you can show case EC’s at that time.
Does applying for business give me better chances at a scholarship? Business has the lowest 75th percentile test scores so I’m assuming it is the least competitive overall school.
So in order to be able to afford Pitt I would need to get the cost down to around 30k. With my stats do you think I qualify for enough merit aid?
3.5 UW/4.10 W
ACT: 31 Comp. 34 Reading 34 English 27 Math
7 APs
While my GPA is a little on the lower end, I have gotten better each year, culminating into a 3.85 UW last year with all Honors/AP classes. Will that be taken into consideration?
@mkat12 Sorry, but I don’t think its likely. The website says recipients in the past of merit scholarships have possessed all of the following: overall A average, 33 ACT, top 5% class rank, excellence in and out of the classroom.
@arose99 and @m139pl Congratulations on your Scholarships!!
As you can guess, we are all very excited the letters have started coming out. I’m trying to confirm what you reported above. Did you both get an OOS $20,000 yearly scholarship with an invitation to apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship?
The reason I ask, and I’m only trying to figure out what the trend in scholarship amounts will be this year and not trying to detract from your very generous offers, is in previous years Pitt has given full tuition scholarship to those who were then offered a chance at Chancellor’s Scholarships. If this year they are only doing partial tuition with that invite I’d be curious about that reason.
Can you possibly give us more information about your stats? Class rank? ACT/SAT scores if you didn’t list it? Which college you applied to, etc.? Thanks for any information you can share, and again, congratulations on your scholarships!
Perhaps we should move this conversation over to the Scholarships thread?
I received a $15,000 per year OOS scholarship with a 1590/2340 SAT and a 3.86UW/4.67W GPA. No invitation for Chancellor’s Scholarship- Did that come in the same letter as the original merit offer for others?
@blossom27 When did you apply and when were you accepted?
@hailtopitt1787 hello, I recently asked for reconsideration for the engineering school and I took the November SATs but I feel like I totally bombed them and dropped the ball after I took about 10 practice tests. Is there any way, if I did bomb the SATs, to see if they will wait and let me take the December SAT?
@class0f2017 My application was processed on 9/23, even though I had applied and sent in all information 2 weeks prior, and I received my acceptance email 10/6 with the letter coming in the next week.
@hailtopitt1787 My child applied for Premed and expecting GAP Med invitation to apply. I see in this Thread and in the BSMD2017 thread that students with similar stats and less GPA also got GAP invitations. They applied later and received both acceptance to college and invitations to GAP too. How do we appeal for the admissions office to review my child’s application again for consideration towards application to GAP Med Program.
Details and Stats:
Acceptance to Pitt received on Sept 9th
Acceptance to Honors college on September 16th
GPA – Weighted: 4.71 Unweighted: 3.94/4.0
ACT: 35 Composite; 36 Math, 35 Reading, 35 Science, 35 English
National Merit Semifinalist
AP Scholar with Distinction (6 APs completed with 5 in each)
Senior year 4 APs
Clinical Research experience, paid internship, shadowing, hospital volunteering, leadership in high school clubs etc.
Please reply how to appeal to review my childs’ application.
@hailtopitt1787 , also, my child called admissions office today and they replied “not receiving an invitation means not qualified”. I would like to know if its OK if I call and ask about appealing to re review my child’s credentials as a parent; would it be considered negative, than the students calling themselves.
.
@COof2017HH, You will need to contact our office to inform us of the change in test schedule: 412-624-7488 or oafa@pitt.edu.
@Malgun98, I am reaching out to a colleague to get a little more information and will be back in touch shortly.

@Malgun98, My colleague who helps coordinate the GAPs in our office has recommended that you contact him to discuss an appeal. I will DM you his information now.

@hailtopitt1787 - is it too late to apply to UPitt GAP (Med) now - meaning do you think all slots are already filled? I am OOS.
@hailtopitt1787 My son got GAP application and submitted it. He did not receive scholarship letter or invitation to chancellors scholarship. He has extremely good credentials. Do you think I need ot wait or should we call admissions.
@MedSciBud, It is not too late anyone who applies to Pitt before November 15 and indicates Pre-medicine or bioengineering on their application is reviewed for eligibility. If you meet the requirements, you will receive an invitation to apply: https://oafa.pitt.edu/explore/guaranteed-admissions-programs/medicine-gap/
@rsmith0208, Congrats to your son on the GAP invitation. You do not need to call about scholarships. Those letters go out separately from GAP invites and scholarships are reviewed by a separate committee. They meet weekly and send out scholarship letters weekly from now through February. It is not uncommon for some applicants to be reviewed a number of times by the scholarship committee before a decision is made, so don’t worry that you haven’t heard yet. The Scholarship Committee is working hard to make decisions and notify everyone as quickly as they can. Bottom line, those who are selected for a scholarship will hear by March 1 at the latest.

A Pitt Admissions Staffer
