oh man i'm paying for the procrastination...2:30AM and going strong on these essays...the night is still young :)

It's 5:30 AM where I'm from, and I'm only about halfway done.

The deadline says the essays must be submitted by February 23rd. So, does that mean 11:59 February 22nd or 11:59 February 23rd? I'm aiming for the former, of course, but I really would like the extra time.

i think it's the sooner one...my impression is that for people mailing, the forms have to be on their desk on the 23rd, so online ones need to be in 11:59 the 22nd...hopefully i'm wrong but i think that's correct

Doesn't it say on the forms that it has to be submitted at 5:00 Central time? I got the impression that both paper and online forms had to be there at that time.

It says in the instructions that everything must be received by 5PM Central Time on the 23rd.

What did you guys put for the “why you chose this teacher” response?

I talked about what I liked about his class and how he taught.

Should I say something at the top of the essay in parentheses about the picture and who it's of? My sensei is a lot older than me so there hopefully won't be confusion. Plus, I have a very Indian name and it's easy to see which is the Indian. The filename is "Me and Sensei.jpg" and it displays that filename on the site but I don't think they'll see that.

One more quick question: is it ok to start two essays in the same style? Two of mine start with "My sensei once told me a story about a boy..." and "My dad once told me a story about a butterfly..."

Hey everyone - can you please post which state you are from and whether or not you are applying? My daughter is applying and is from North Dakota.

i'm from Washington and i'm applying...bad decision in retrospect

6 more hours until deadline...

Zogoto, are you from MA?

Tennessee

The more I think about my essays, the more I realize how lucky I would be to make semifinalist. I hope no other girls from my state apply ;-).

Do you guys think it will look like slacking if you only get on average halfway to the character limit? I think my essays say what they need to say, but I'm afraid I will look like I didn't put enough effort into my application (which I kinda didn't, but I really don't think it's conspicuous when not considering the length of my essays).

Zogoto is from Arizona....

"Location: Arizona"

yeah, that part^^^^

getting nominated is solely based on your M and V SAT scores right?

Right, jcr, but you can also qualify with the ACT. They might change their policy in the coming years about only using math and critical reading scores.

I'm all done! I submitted with two and a half minutes to spare according to their official clock, but the website says my application was submitted two minutes after the 5:00 P.M. central time deadline. Is this going to be a problem? That would suck if they throw out my application because of two measly minutes...

mine says:

5:59.

but that's eastern time, and the deadline is 5 pm central time.

which means I submitted it at 4:59. One minute to spare! Wow.

You don't even want to know when I started this thing......

I hope those character limits don't mean anything. eek. I didn't even approach the limit on some of those.

^ I don't think it'll matter too much. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to read a 1500 word long essay from everyone.

That's what I was figuring. They did say "Please be concise" after all.

Alright! Reflection time. What do you think your chances of becoming a semifinalist are? I'd estimate mine at 10%. About 20% of candidates become semifinalists.
