Presidential Scholarship

IS, scholars. Got 5k/yr. for 4 years-Presidential. Letter came in the mail yesterday.

where do u live? because i dodnt get anything in mail and i live 30 min away from the university umd

@heycall123
15 minutes drive to college park on the beltway. Also, idk when or if it appeared online too bc never checked. Hopefully, you’ll get your snailmail on Monday before the next (and very last - it better be!) Snowstorm!

I feel incredibly stupid :confused: I’m oos in scholars (environment), and I only got 2k. Now UMD is completely out of reach :/

Dont feel stupid…I am OOS and was accepted into Honors and did not get much more than that…I am in the same boat as you and will not be a terp next year

In State, Honors (EIP). 5k/year Presidential Scholarship. I’m a little disappointed, I would have preferred 8k. Still likely to end up at UMD though

My son is OOS Honors. UMD offered him $2K / year Presidential Scholarship. Unless there is a significant surprise in the FA package, UMD is off the list.

Got the letter in the mail today. In State. Honors, (EIP). 5k/year. Live 30 minutes from College Park.

@Fauster Exact situation here

Let’s all hope the FA package will give everyone who needs some money what they need! UMD is my top choice, so I’m eager to hear back. I hope there is more merit aid other than the President’s and Banner/Key!

Our youngest child is admitted to Honors, has a 4.0/4.4 gpa and SAT of 660 reading/ 770 Math and only got a small one year scholarship. Our oldest had similar grades but a SAT of 720/730 but got a 5k/yr Presidential. We were surprised with honors the scholarship was so small. Could it be the major? Youngest is political science and oldest is engineering. Or maybe the more balanced SAT scores?

The Presidential letter stated that 2014 was the most academically competitive class in history maybe the bar has been raised.

I have been hearing that from a lot of colleges this year. Many have had a record number of applicants, which obviously would make it more competitive.

@pk2014
Several classmates of mine got higher scholarships than me. All of which I have a higher class rank, and more extracurriculars than, just a slightly lower SAT score. It seems apparent that was their main evaluation point.

My DS finally got his letter yesterday–I was getting worried! We are OOS (New England). He was admitted to Honors and the College of Engineering. He received a $12K/year ($48K total) Presidential. (For comparison sake for other OOS students, his stats are: 35 ACT, 3.93 UW GPA, SAT II scores of 720 Physics and 710 Math II, 10 AP/college classes.) Hoping the financial aid package includes a bit more to make UMD competitive with several other schools that have already offered him merit/grants, as the university is one of his top choices.

@amiable do not expect much grant/ work study money unless you have more they one college student. UMD does have Engineering Scholarships for second, third and fourth year students therefore you must carefully weigh your options

@bonee26 – We do actually have an older son already in college, so next year we will have two in school. I’m hoping to get a bit of need-based money to make UMD’s costs comparable to what we would pay for our own state university (which does not have the major my son wants, otherwise we would be considering it.) It will be tough, though, because he has offers from several private universities that would cost less. Will have to make the call after we see everything in writing from every school. But thanks for the tip about the scholarships for continuing engineering students!

@amiable I am in the same boat one at UMD engineering because SUNY is terrible and the other weighing his options. The smoke will clear after 3/27 ivy day but as parents we must analysis all possibilities and options.

On the Financial Aid website I’m still getting the “an award package has not been created for you” message. Does this mean I probably will not receive any merit scholarships?

On the my mail, the letter only shows the amount of Scholarship.
Login the Financial Aid website , it shows everything: Scholarship, grant, work study… How much it costs finally so if you decide to go to UMD, you know exactly how much you have to pay.
