Yeah, I got 5k for 4 years. That’s not even going to put a dent into what I’d need. UMD quickly moved to the bottom of my list haha. It’s such a shame, it’s a great school too.

I will be in the same situation. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in California is $22,000/year for residents and has a fantastic engineering program. If I dont get a lot of help from university of maryland I will be going there

We are out of state - shocked at the paltry amount for Presidents: $5K

Daughters SATs - 1450; QPA - 4.91; National Merit Finalist; boatloads of extra-curricular activities.

Four other similar Universities have offered her $9K with another $6K undecided, $15K, $12, and full ride. We are preety sure we will not get financial aid other than student loans so now UMD is totally non-competitive. This really sucks as it was my daughters first choice originally…

marnick1
Know what you are saying… I have been offered $25000 (private school), $14,500, $13,000 and $12,000 for other out of state schools. Really wanted to go to University of Maryland but cant go without substantial scholarship.

I have talked to a few admissions/scholarship folks and their line is this is the very best applicant class they have had. The problem is they are in for a rude awakening for OOS. At $35K for out of state all up it makes no sense for a top end student to choose Maryland for a mere $5K off. I have not seen any OOS with the typical $12K they used to give yet. My guess is they are trying to spread the pot too thin and what they will find is very few Out of State will bother with Maryland because of that.

So even though they think they have a stronger applicant class, lets see what happens on the actual acceptances. My bet will be this backfires big time and their overall statistics for incoming students go down as a result.

Well, they plan for less yield, knowing that some B/K and other scholarship recipients will obviously be accepted to other places with their high GPAs and SAT scores. Unfortunately, nearly all public universities across the U.S. are dealing with budget cuts, and UMD (just like UNC and probably all other states) have a high percentage of students they accept and attend from MD. Although they like to have wide representation from beyond MD, the truth (and the laws in the state) says that a specific % must be MD residents.

As a NC mom of 2 Terps, believe me, I know the tuition rates for OOS are steep and even a $12K scholarship only puts a sizeable dent in the OOS tuition. But, don’t try to make yourself feel better about things by foreseeing this backfiring “big time”. They know and plan for these things.

astrophysicsmom - thanks, my point was at $12K off for Presidential in the past you would take the total OOS costs from ~$35 to around $23 whereas an in state at $5K took total costs frm $21K to $16K. So in state high end students still had a much better deal than OOS by about $8K

At OOS down to only $5K, now you are looking at Presidnetial OOS at $30K vs. $16K instate.

I realize all the budget cuts but compared to other out of state public univeristies my daughter applied to $5K is not in line; not even close.

Would your two terps still have been terps at only $5K vs. $12K merit?

Marnick, poster Bulletandpima and I have said multiple times on the UMD forums that we agree with you…UMD is historically tight-fisted with their money regard OOS merit aid. Every year there are several OOS students that end up going elsewhere, because they got much better awards elsewhere. Again, it all is part of how UMD calculates their yield and how they distribute their merit awards. And, to answer your personal question, yes. In our family’s case, UMD has been WAY worth the money we’ve had to pay above their merit awards.

In a similar vein, since financial aid letters have not come out yet, for OOS students the financial aid pretty much sucks too. Even if the family EFC is near 0, their financial aid status will likely end up showing a huge amount of “unmet need”. There are several MD financial aid awards that obviously don’t apply to us foreigners.

In our own case, the state of NC has some really bizarre laws, and any OOS student that gets any level of merit aid award (at least at UNC-Chapel Hill), automatically gets full tuition and Room/board paid due to some “brilliant idea” from our state legislature several years ago. For in-state students, there’s something similar to B/K (altho fewer are awarded) and other merit awards that differ in value (similar to the UMD Presidential). Granted, the IS tuition is much less (even than UMD IS tuition is), but it never made much sense to me that they award a full-ride to any one out of state who gets an award, while even more qualified IS students can still have room and board and other $$ to pay…it seems to me that they do nothing to attract their high level in-state performers. It’s exactly opposite what you’ve pointed out about UMD. Go figure… Sorry for that soapbox speech. I’ve digressed…

I’m sorry if this takes UMD out of the running for your daughter. It is a great school, but unfortunately financial decisions obviously make a huge deal…even if it’s a student’s “dream school.” Good luck to your daughter and you.

Wow - I wanted my daughter to apply to UNC Chapel Hill!!!

I wish we had known some of this before applying. For us we are unlikely to get financial aid other than student loans.

I just talked to her guidance counselor and she was pretty much shocked and she herself suggested crossing Maryland of our list (I thought that was kind of weird but refreshingly honest!)

This is all a bummer.

@marnick, as a NMF, did your D apply to any of the schools around the nation that guarantee a “full ride” to all NMFs? If not, many of them “leave the door open” until very late in the cycle. While not top 20, some are still very good schools, and “free” is great :)

The sad part is that the GC was “shocked”. She should be all over CC, as she would have easily learned that UMDCP is stingy with OOS aid and advise all her students accordingly. Parents should not be informing GCs about scholarship odds, it should be the other way around.

I am OOS and received the $12K President’s Scholarship letter yesterday. To be honest, I am truly in shock because I don’t think my stats are nearly as good as any of yours. I was not offered Honors or Scholars either. I already accepted my admission offer from Penn State but now I ovbiously need to rethink things. My parents are beyond thrilled as this now makes it cheaper for me to go out of state than it would be for me to attend my instate safety (Rutgers)…and I really want to go out of state!

I’m guessing it’s a no brainer now, but I’ll ask anyway: any reason for me not to change my mind and attend Maryland now? I applied undeclared at both schools and am really unsure about what I would like to study. Would you say Maryland are Penn State are true academic peers?

I can say this because it’s on the UMD site, but I think that in most areas, UMD > Penn State (except for football teams…). Of course, I’m biased, but the proximity to DC adds a lot of additional opportunities to MANY different majors. Obviously the scholarship committee saw something in your application that made them really want you to attend! Congrats and good luck with your decision.

I think Penn State and MD are academic peers. Each school has its strength and weakness. It really depends on your major. Both offer many solid choices for undeclared majors.

LucyLou you are giving me some hope…my letter still has not come. Talked to Uof MD today and said I was awarded the presidents scholarship but they wont tell me the amount on the phone.

I would just be thrilled to pieces if my OOS D received even $2,000 a year. Not expecting anything. Admitted to CP Scholars but don’t feel like her stats are anything special for UMD. Trying to stretch our budget just a little to get her to her school of choice and anything at all$$ would be fantastic, and a surprise.

Did anyone on West Coast get their letter yet? I have not received my letter and it is killing me. All they will tell me is that I got the scholarship but not how much. Sent last wed so would expect to be here by now.

I’m from NJ, so if I haven’t received anything in the mail about scholarship does that mean I’m likely not to receive anything?

I called admissions today and they said that they are sending out scholarships in waves until 4/1.

I am OOS and got 8k per year (32000 total) 33 acts 3.84 UW GPA. Does anyone know anything about the academic common market and if they will reduce my presidents scholarship because I will receive instate tuition?
