Regents' & Chancellor's Scholarship

Thanks sh!rley. What is your son's intended major? What has he said about the dorms?

My son has yet to declare a major, although it looks like he will go on to law school, his advisors are making recommendations on which major would be best for him to achieve this dream. He is in Unit 3 (his first choice), and loves it. He has so many friends in the dorm, its unbelieveable, also very easy access to the campus and the many places where students can dine. As a parent I am such a great fan of Berkeley. To all of those who decide to attend CAL, I truly believe you will never regret that decision!!

I got invited for the UC Berkeley Regents' (interview week from today in LA)...but not for UC Irvine or UCLA (accepted at both)...anyone else in the same boat?

I'm currently a freshman with regents at Cal.

There seems to be a lot of confusion so I'll clear some things up.

money: you get 1000 no matter what if you get regents. If you require financial aid, they give you a grant according to this formula, student budget - (yours + parental expected contribution) - 1000(the thousand they give you anyways).

housing: guaranteed housing as long as you are regents. You do not get guaranteed choice. The wording is as follows: they will make an extra effort to accomodate but without guarantees.

scheduling and classes: you get absolutely no priority registration unlike other UC's.

clubs: there is a regents and chancellors club which is okay.

elgibility: they pick you out of the application pool if they want you. If you get asked for an interview you are absolutely accepted to Cal unless you are just retarded enough to make them unaccept you at the interview. Also, most people that interview get regents. The 200/1000 is a misguided figure. 1000 are interviewed. 200 who enter Cal as freshman are regents. Does that mean that the other 800 did not get it? No. It means that 1000 were interviewed many regents were offered but many students of this caliber probably dont consider berkeley as their top choice and dont go to Cal even though they are offered a Regents and Chancellors scholarship.

Also, to maintain regents while at cal you must keep a 3.0 GPA minimum per semester.

Feel free to ask more questions.

"Also, most people that interview get regents. The 200/1000 is a misguided figure."

NICE. I was wondering about that. Unfortunately for them, I am one of those who does not consider Cal their first choice, but they certainly look better if my chances for getting the scholarship are better than I thought. Thanks for the post jokemon.

Thanks jokemon for clearing it up. I had the feeling it was pretty certain as long as I enrolled.
One question: is attending the OHP required to show interest, and ultimately getting it?
Thanks!

Garou- what's your 1st choice? Just curious.

The OHP is run by the RCSA club on campus which means its the students that are running it. The OHP is to give you an opportunity to visit CaL and to show you how great the school is.

Although I can't guarantee whether going to OHP or not helps because I'm not involved in that, but I'm pretty sure, 95% sure that it doesnt matter if you go or not.

Jokemon - thanks!

My first choice is Yale, although I don't think I'll get in. =( I applied early, you see. Because it was my very first college application submitted at the latest time possible, it is is also my worst one, IMO.

ANYways, speaking of OHP, since March is such a crazy month for me I decided to go to the April overnight. If you end up going I guess I might see you there.

Regents at Berkeley seems devalued compared to some of the other UCs

how so? can you elaborate?

he might be referring to the 1k offered by berkeley regetns compared to the amount at other ucs..

sorry, should have provided more detail.

no free tuition

no priority registration

no preferred parking

I agree with joemama...as much as Cal has always ranked above UCLA of where I want to go, the perks at UCLA seem to be much more enticing...

The other U.C.'s offer more with the Regents because they are trying to entice high cabilar candidates that naturally flow into CAL. I will tell you they might not guarantee that you get a class, but i noticed that my son has gotten all the classes he wanted at the time he wanted. Housing?? He got his first choice. In many ways not guaranteeing things gives the university some fudge room, if they can't swing something for a RCSA. I noticed that the lower the ranking of a U.C. the higher the base of the Regents package.
Suppy and demand

wait, i thought we get a full ride to CAL if we're a R&C scholar?

this depends on your financial need: (see: http://students.berkeley.edu/fao/scholarships/RCaward.html )
For anyone without financial need (at least by fafsa's standards...grumbles) it is $1000 a year...

I stayed overnight at unit 3 through the OHP program and had my interview today. The dorms were really chill and the campus and everything is nice. Interview was nice and informal. Basically its more of a conversation about cal rather than an interview. Professor asked some basic questions and I asked him a few questions and he kept on talking until time was up. Basically, it was a positive experience.

I had Prof Perez......

i hope i have a bio/chem professor!
