UCSD is still comprehensive review…

I hope they did screw up. No offense to the ones who got accepted to SD here, most of you probably do deserve it. But, there are like 2 people who got in at my school that really should not have got in. They have like a 3.5 and 3.9 UC GPA, bad sat’s. One has a lot of EC’s, the other has absolutely nothing. Both are rich and they are pot heads now.

TOTAL BS.

Sigh hope u guys the best of luck for the other schools. Not getting in UCSD isnt the end of the world, blame the economy for making it harder to get in -.-.

Feel sorry for those guys for the higher bar this year for UCSD. I analyse as follows:

Traditionally UCB/UCLA are top choices for the top candidates.UC rely on GPA/AP/IB and less on ec.

For those who could get in UCB/LA with less steller academic achievement or less ec in the past, they are now “down-shifted” to other tiers, of which SD is a very popular choice. The displacement is due to both budget cuts ( hence more coming to state schools) and growth in size of appln pool.

UCSB/I/D will become more competitive with another layer of “downshifting” phenomenon.

Lesson to learn: future applicants should apply for wider layers of UCs–take nothing for granted if U prefer UC over Cal State & cc transfer.

To ppl here: statistically U will get one of SB/I/D if U have applied to all–all the best

ugghhhhhh i got rejected this morning.

this is the rejected message for those interested:
We have carefully reviewed your application and regret that we are unable to offer you admission to the University of California, San Diego. The selection process was very difficult this year due to a record number of highly competitive applicants.

The primary reason we must turn away qualified students is simply that of
competition. UC San Diego received more than 48,000 applications for a class of
approximately 3,692 freshmen. We had to deny admission to nearly 30,000
applicants, most of whom were UC-eligible. Most students denied by UC San Diego
are eligible to gain admission to at least one of the other UC campuses. We strongly
encourage you to focus on the options offered to you.

3.9 UC GPA
1990 SAT
750 USH SAT II/640 Lit

RawMcatBB - I completely agree with what you said. I don’t think I’m gonna try to appeal now seeing the level of other people that were denied too. It certainly is unfair that ELC students with less class rigor got in (friend got in with a 1600 SAT1 cause he had an overinflated GPA which resulted in ELC)… but I guess that’s life… people getting turned away with even 2100 SATs.

I’m not sad about going to Irvine anymore if I get turned down from Cal. Atleast Irvine will be more competitive now as well.

Although shocking that some people get rejected/waitlisted with higher numbers, SAT and GPA, than someone with lower numbers, it really should not be. As they have said the academic portion only constitutes 74%, that means another applicant can easily make up that difference.

Since this is the first year of waitlist, no one knows anything about how it work, so hang tight. Waitlist here at UCSD might and probably is the exact same thing as being a Winter admit, which is what they used in the past.

Selection process

Step I: Academic review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500
Scores of all required exams 3,200
Number of “a-g” courses beyond the minimum 500

Step II: Additional academic factors
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational environment 300

Step III: Socioeconomic factors
Low family income 300
First generation college attendance 300

Step IV: Personal characteristics and achievement factors
Demonstrated leadership 300
Special talents/ achievements/ awards 300
Community and volunteer service 300
Participation in academic development preparation programs 300
Special circumstances/ personal challenges 500

Consider this someone with a 4.5 garnering 4500 points, and someone having only 3.6 which would give you 80% of the possible 4500 points, 3600 points. This difference could easily be made up and surpassed by only taking 2 classes beyond the “a-g” requirements. This seems more than fair because this means someone who went above and beyond the required courses is getting credit for classes they did not even have to take. Maybe the person with the 4.5 GPA just took the bare minimum, and the other applicant with the 3.6 took a math, science, history, performing arts, and electives every single semester they were in high school for all 4 years. It’s pretty obvious that the 3.6 applicant would quickly surpass the applicant with a 4.5.

i dont know if it was just my school that is lame, but they required us to sign a form to release grades for ELC. i was sick that day, and never got the form. ever. comparing my class rank to others that got in, i was well within the range. if i had a shot at ucsd from ELC and i knew about the form i wouldve done everything to get it… but thats life i guess, eh?

rejected but its ok :), but I am surprised that many people got rejected

3.92 uc gpa

UC GPA: 4.05
SAT: 1950.

bawled the whole day. but now i’m super excited for irvine :D. see you guys there!

Rejected as well. @LodyWang, I too cried the entire day, and woke up feeling devastated. Trying to get over it, but it really sucks when your options are slimming down to nothing. This page makes me feel better though, because I’m not alone.

UC GPA: 3.8
SAT I: 2190
SAT II: 770, 680
100+ hours, lots of leadership
Applied undeclared.

I’m most likely going to appeal-- even if the chances are slim to none. UCSD was my dream school.

Waitlisted (expected rejection)
SAT1 1580/1600; 2290/2400
SAT2 Math2 (800) BioE (780)

Not going to bother with waitlist.

wow a 2400 and 3.9wgpa… absurd

^haha he has a 2290. close enough to 2400 though. :P

Ok, so I just called the admission office, and after being hung up on and wasting over 20 of my expensive cell phone minutes, I finally got through to an admission officer, who said “all I can say is that you were very close to being admitted”, and went over some of the areas that I earned extra points for. She kinda hung up on me after she told me about my points, but I’m going to call back again tonight and ask about filing an appeal, as my grandfather died last year and I did not mention it on the application. Does anyone know if I can get special circumstance points for this? Thanks.

^Probably not, but it can’t hurt to try I guess.
