Did you run the NPC on the website?

Did you look at the scholarship page?

I think they may also have some scholarships for minority students.

They seem to have a Nov 1st priority deadline.

National Buckeye Scholarship for non-Ohio residents
Award amount
$12,000 ($48,000 four–year value)

Criteria
Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. The National Buckeye Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to non-Ohio students required to pay the out-of-state surcharge who are admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester. Those considered rank in the top 40 percent of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1260 or higher.

Notes:

Except where noted, the National Buckeye Scholarship can be combined with any other merit scholarships, as long as the combined total does not exceed the total cost of an Ohio State education.
This award is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters (or the equivalent) of full-time undergraduate enrollment, provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA (earned by no later than the end of the second year) and is required to pay the out-of-state surcharge.

Run the NPC…that’s likely your best bet since you may not get merit money. However, I’m not sure if you’ll get enough to afford to go.

How much will your family pay each year? Will it pay the EFC? More? Less? Have you talked to your parents to get a number?

"University of Iowa (60,000) "

Did you get a $15k per year award from Iowa? Have you run their NPC?

Yes they gave me a lot of money I guess I have ran Ohio and iowa net price calculator and the results are a little pricey.
Income of parents 40,000-50,000

Will your parents pay their EFC?

What does the TAMU NPC indicate?

To be honest, unless you get into one of those generous top schools that meet need, going OOS for someone from a modest income home is often just way too expensive. There are a LOT of hidden costs to going far away to college…airfares at pricey times, airport shuttles, extra-luggage fees, summer storage for stuff…and if parents travel to help with move-in, there are costs with that.

Ok thank yes they are willing to pay. My brother goes to ut but it’s all loans that he is paying for. Yes tamu said about 11,000 left to be covered by loans

As a texas resident, none of your schools are financially feasible options. You will pay the OOS rate for all of them (remember, the goal of a public university is to provide an affordable education for their state residents). It is highly unlikely that you will get enough money to make it feasible for you to attend.

With a 4249 EFC, you are only guaranteed a small pell grant (1395 per year),
https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/financialaid/documents/PellChart1314.pdf</a>
and a $5500 Loan.

As a non-resident student, the university of Iowa is going to cost ~ 40k. You got a 15k Scholarship. This along with your 5500 loan, and 1395 pell will leave 18k on the table for your parents to pay. How do you propose they do that?

Texas

“My brother goes to ut but it’s all loans that he is paying for. Yes tamu said about 11,000 left to be covered by loans”

Your brother may get more aid now that his EFC has dropped with you starting school.

Can you copy/paste your TAMU NPC results?

It sounds like the $11k is a combo of EFC plus loans.

Remember…the NPC provides estimates. Hopefully you have applied to a good variety of colleges. At this point, you will just have to wait and see what the ACTUAL financial aid awards are.

The OOS public universities will likely be unaffordable, unless you happen to land a great merit award from one. These schools make no promise to meet your need (neither do the Texas schools, but at least you are looking at in state costs there). All you are guaranteed with those OOS schools is the portion of the Pell and the Direct loan of $5500 as a freshman…about $7000 total.

That $7000 will cover a higher %age of your costs at an instate public university.

Ok thank you sooooooooooooooooo much you guys are really helpful

With a top 10% ranking, you should get the Texas top10% scholarship from the state. It is 2K and renews every year if you qualify. Check out College for All Texans. There are other programs you might qualify for if you stay in state.

If I’m reading this correctly, TAMU will likely be far less expensive if you get the grants and scholarships it’s suggesting.

however, I don’t know why, but UT estimates a LOT more for Personal Expenses and Misc…which I would think should be rather similar to TAMU’s …so consider that when you get your pkgs.

And, for some reason, TAMU’s estimate for books is much higher. Is TAMU on quarters? Is UT on semesters?

Were you asked what your stats are???

No TAMU is on semesters just like UT. The books estimate is way over what a frugal student could find. Realistically, TAMU COA could be around 19K if you were careful with spending money.

No just regular things excluding test scores

“No TAMU is on semesters just like UT. The books estimate is way over what a frugal student could find. Realistically, TAMU COA could be around 19K if you were careful with spending money.”

True. And that’s why going much further away (OOS) can cause a jump in travel/misc expenses.

Ok thank you so much

When you get your FA offers, please come back and let us know what they are.

Good luck!
