Shipman Scholars?

I agree with tetra. My essay may have made the difference.
Topic was relatively ordinary, but it was extremely well-written. I actually submitted it as a supplement for most of my other schools, including Harvard.

My scholarship offers were dated within the same week. So they may be sending stuff out in chunks...hmm

Yeah, but after looking on the website, it doesn't appear as if essays plays a large role in the nomination process. It seems to be based solely on scores and GPA, the two things that stand out most on my resume.

Maybe Michigan has people on these boards that have seen your posts about the university.

LSA Scholarship FAQ says that scores and GPA are essentially cut-offs. After you've met Honors criteria (1400 SAT or 32 ACT, 3.8 Mich GPA) your application is re-evaluated holistically. It looks like the nonquantifiable stuff is more important for scholarships than you'd think.

dsmo, I really hope not. If they are, I love Michigan! And just to show my allegiance to your school, just look at my knowledge of Michigan football.

It is my understanding that they only invite a limited number of people to the Shipman Weekend - and they are checking to see how many are confirming - possibly so they can invite more? I was told by admissions that they are definitely sending invitations through the first week of March. Alexandre- can you help or shed any light on this? Previously posted stats for my D, and she did receive the Award of Excellence scholarship ($2,000 to $12,000 per year!), and the Michigan Scholar Award scholarship ($5,000 per year), but we are still keeping our fingers crossed for Shipman...she is going to LSA (obviously) and has been invited to attend LSA Honors...but we need more $$$! Quick recap of stats:
SAT: 2320
ACT: 33
Michigan GPA: 4.0
Rank: 1 of 210
OOS
Hispanic female

Anyone have any insight on what else we can expect by way of scholarships? Thanks!

She may get an LSA Scholarship, which is 20,000 a year renewable for up to 4 years.

for the Award of Excellence, you need to demonstrate financial need, correct?

How does the Award of Excellence work? Do you get more money if you are poor, or if you are a stronger applicant? Does it matter how much financial need you demonstrate? I think I have a few thousand dollars of need.

Why would a 3.5 GPA be easier to achieve at U of M for an RSI "alternate" rather than a regular admitted student. AM I missing something here lol...

You are. Read up on RSI - there's a ton of threads in these forums.

ok...this topic was not created to bash RSI alternates. I think there was quite enough of that before; we don't need to recreate it.

To answer your question simply, because RSI is so selective, being acknowledged by the admissions committee is indicative of both potential in science and overall academic achievement. I believe his point was that an RSI alternate is not the run-of-the-mill admitted student to UMich. You may disagree, but I guess that's a discussion for another topic.

I did have a question about Shipman housing in comparison to other dorms on campus. Can anyone tell us about it?

I don't think housing is any different.

I did a quick browse of the facebook group. Except for one is in East Quad, one in West Quad, and one in Baits, all 09s in the group live in South Quad (aka Honors housing).

Housing is a little bit different. While Shipman Scholars have the option of picking any dorm they want, there is a section of South Quad on the 7th floor that is reserved for Shipman students. While the Honors housing on the third and fourth floors is only for LSA students, Shippers from all schools (including LSA, Art&Design, etc) live on the 7th floor together. Right now, only freshman live in Shipman housing, but a lot of us are sticking around for next year. So in 2006-2007, there will be sophomores and freshmen living together in Shipman housing.

As a slight modification to kate's post, 1st and 2nd Fred House are also honors housing. All of 3rd and 4th floors are. 7th Thronson is Shipman housing but is not considered "honors housing" though many sophomores who were honors students as freshmen live on the upper floors of South Quad.

Has anyone received a Shipman invite LATELY? Or should I just quit holding my breath?

I got a Shipman invite in the mail yesterday, even though I haven't even gotten my acceptance in the mail yet. Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should go to Shipman weekend (I have other stuff going on that weekend and Michigan is my safety and I already got into my first choice). So can anyone who went in the past tell me what its like, did it change your mind about Michigan, did you enjoy it, etc?

LOL I am very well aware of what RSI is. I just feel that having the impression that being an RSI "aternate" entitles one to feel superior to other Michigan applicants is like clinging on to false hope. Unless you have done some serious scientific research are involved in national scientific activities, the only reason RSI made you an alternate is probably because you had high SAT scores and laudatory teacher recs, both of which the colleges you apply to have access to anyway. In that sense, being an RSI "alternate" doesn't really signify anything extra, especially since you couldn't even attend the program, other than the fact that you had the incentive to apply. Sorry to digress from the topic of Shipman Scholars folks, but I feel that it is important to warn students not to try to "fetch" praise from colleges and universities, especially with a "honor" like RSI alternate which isn't backed up with some major science/math competition or research awards.

That's just my opinion anyway. Good luck with your future endeavors LadyinRed.:)

Back on topic, so is Shipman Scholars basically like a full-ride to U of M???

Are you sure? Have you seen the percentages for acceptances? What about alternates?

You remind me of the other guy who likes to make comments without any backup. I had high SAT scores and "laudatory" (whatever that means here) teacher recs. I wasn't an alternate.

This would be acceptable from an adcom. From you, it is funny.

And why do people flame and then post smilies? Do they think that makes them nice?

Well, anyway... it pleases me to note that I, the OP, have just received my Shipman packet!!! Hooray! Thanks everyone for their support and help and input and whatnot.

It's a deal then, supermurgatroyd, you will be a Wolverine come September eh? hehe
