So I called UCLA Admissions and I think they screwed up!!

So I got rejected with a 3.89 TAP IGETC, I called them and asked them why and they said that I was missing Organic Chemistry which I am not. I am taking Chemistry 14c right now at UCLA Extension, my friend got accepted and he is in the same ochem class and major as me. the only difference is that in the UC Application, because its ucla extension, you have to write down the class name. I wrote "Chem 14c", he wrote "Chem XL14C Organic Chemistry". They also said that my bio at 1 college and my bio at another were the same course which they were not. One was General Bio 1 which covered evolutionary bio/environmental bio etc..., the other was Gen Bio which covered cellular bio, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, cell organs, and systems"

Do I have a strong chance to appeal?

they pretty much think im missing prereqs but I am not!

You have a strong case. That’s just misunderstanding. If that’s the reason you got rejected, sounds like you’re good to go.

yeah if you guys want to verify, go to assist.org, and type college of the canyons and click Bio major. I took Bio 106, then try Los Angeles Valley college with the same major, I took Bio 6. They are saying these classes are the same but they articulate to the 2 different pre-reqs

@Nabil

Any updates?

^ yes, any update? you definitely have grounds for appeal.

good luck!

Well it seems I have to just submit an appeal in which I can’t do until May 7th :confused:
hopefully it works!

Wait I’m confused. You say UCLA screwed up when you screwed up your application when “I wrote “Chem 14c”, he wrote “Chem XL14C Organic Chemistry”.” !??!?!!

@Nabil

When you log on URSA can you access your housing application and fill it out?

Give 'em hell.

Well, I kind of assumed that UCLA knows what their own chem series is and would recognize Chem 14c as organic chemistry especially as the bio department views my application.

@UCLAhopeful

I never saw my financial aid nor summary and could not access housing :/

but yeah, my friend and I both have the same major, igetc, tap, the same chem series (I got an A+ first quarter A- second quarter he got a B and then a C) and he was accepted with a 3.55.

What do you guys think my chances are? There is a girl in my class that said a few years ago she applied to UCLA and they said she didn’t have 60 units which she did and said her gpa was a 2.5 when it was a 3.5, she appealed and got in.

BY THE WAY:

Do you guys think it would be advantageous to state that UCLA is really the only university that can work with my Chem 14 series because its native to UCLA. The chem 14 series jumps around the textbook A LOT like 2 sections from chapter 16 1 section from chapter 4 6 sections from chapter 24 2 sections from chapter 6, whereas chem series at the other UCS are divided by (chapter 1-6) (chapter 7-12), (Chapter 12-18) etc for their quarters. So it is kind of hard to know where I’ll be placed for my last quarters of Organic Chem at another UC.

Please answer! :]

What does it say when you try to access your housing application?

Many years ago when I was serving overseas I took Calculus I, Calculus II and Math 53 by correspondence through the UC Berkeley extension and they were number X-Math 1a, X- Math 1b and X-Math 53 in the catalouge which explained that courses that did not have an X as their first letter were courses that were devoloped by the UC Berkeley extension and and did not count towards a degree at Berkeley and were not generally transferable to other schools. On the other hand the X-courses were identical to courses given at the UC Berkeley campus and would count towards a degree at Berkeley or would usually be accepted by other universities for transfer credit.

@Nabilesmail, I think your failure to label your Organic Chemistry course with an X- prefix is the reason why your friend was accepted and your were rejected. I imagine all the UC extensions have been using this numbering system for a long time. It may be grounds for appeal if you can show that you took the X-class and you did not realize how important it was to list the course number exactly as it is listed in the catalouge.

@Lemataire

That is very interesting but also, they did not say I was missing General Chemistry, just Organic Chemistry. My General Chemistry was also Chem 14a and Chem 14b and I did not label them with an X

@Nabile

What do you see when you log onto MyUCLA? Do you see your major/summer session student/nothing?

nabilesmail, last year someone got in after calling repeatedly and telling them they made a mistake… i would suggest the same, go look at the 2010 acceptance thread… i think his/her name was eminsclair - just call different hours, different times, talk to different people, tell you find a helpful person.

Yeah, emil caught a mistake on their part. Sounds like you just had a problem with an oversight, which is good! Talk to them today and see what you can get accomplished.

I find out in 4.5 hours why i got rejected, im praying that its something related to an oversight as well!!

Okay thanks guys! I’ll call them up, do I just call up the normal UCLA number and talk to the people that tell you the reason for rejection or am I trying to talk to a higher up? Should I go drive there in person?

@UCLAHopeful

I just see that im a summer student unknown session and i cant do housing.

Can someone also post last years thread? I tried to search for it but couldn’t find it

@nabil

here’s the thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/913557-official-2010-ucla-acceptance-thread-19.html

@Nanilesmail

This is from the UCLA extension website:

"Degree Credit Courses

Are you missing just a few units to complete your degree? Shut out of classes at your university or community college? Need to complete prerequisites for a graduate program? Or, maybe you’re making a career change and need to “fill-in” some coursework?

No matter what your situation, chances are UCLA Extension degree credit courses can help you. We offer degree credit courses in everything from Literature and Political Science to Statistics and Business. Classes are held at night and on weekends to fit the schedule of busy students and transitioning professionals.

Because all of our courses and instructors are approved by UCLA academic departments, UCLA Extension degree credit courses, curricula and instructors are held to the same rigorous academic standards that UCLA courses and professors are.

Courses designated as “XL” courses are equivalent to undergraduate courses offered by the UCLA regular session; they are transferable for unit and subject credit toward a Bachelor’s Degree at all University of California campuses. Courses with the “X” designation, are structured in accordance with UCLA undergraduate course requirements, but include subject matter not part of the regular undergraduate curriculum; they are transferable for unit credit toward a Bachelor’s Degree at all campuses of the University of California.

For a list of applicable degree-credit courses, choose a discipline from the drop-down menu below. On the next screen, “Refine Results” by selecting the classroom or online format."

Organic Chemistry 14 does have an XL prefix so if that is the course you took you should get degree credit for it from UCLA. I think this should definitely be part of your appeal. You took the required course but did not give its full course designation as it appears in the UCLA Extension catalogue.
