I just submitted my transfer application for the Spring 2016 semester. My major is Petroleum Engineering. My 2nd choice is Industrial Engineering. I would like to know what are my chances of getting in to my 1st or 2nd choice.
I have reviewed the transfer course sheets for both majors already, but I’m not so sure about my chances of getting accepted into at least one of them.
Also does the admissions committee review Credit By Exam courses? I took the Precalculus exam and I got a C for the course.
Here are the rest of the courses I took at my community college:
Calculus 1&2- A
Calculus 3- this Fall
University Physics 1&2-A
General Chemistry 1&2-A
Composition 1&2-A
Federal Govt-A
Texas Govt-this Fall
U.S History 1-A
U.S History 2-B
General Psychology-A
Music Appreciation-A
Technical & Business Writing-A
GPA: 3.93/4.00
Total hours: 55 credit hours.
I do not have any work or internship experience yet, but I do have a lot of volunteer experience and extracurricular activities. I hope the admissions committee focuses more on my volunteer experience, extracurricular activities, and course grades and not because I do not have any work or internship experience yet.
I am applying to Texas A&M University, not UT-Austin for the Spring 2016 semester. Didn’t realize that this was a UT-Austin thread until now. I would still like to know my chances of getting accepted into A&M are though.
Hey everyone, please let me know what you think of my chances! Thanks

@carpendc You might get in to Computer Science, but I’m not so sure, because you are not taking University Physics 2 this Fall. Your grades are excellent and you’ve completed most of the required core classes, except Federal and Texas Government, and a few others. Other than that, you have a great résumé and I think you should get in for sure! Best of luck to you!
Hint: UT-Austin does not accept engineering transfers for the Spring semester.
@karlmbagna I would say your chances of getting in are not very high. The applicant pool is extremely competitive for the College of Natural Sciences. You might want to take the credit by exam or the class again for Chemistry 2. If you get all A’s this Fall, you would have a higher chance of getting in. Not only that, your essays need to be flawless, if the admissions committee decides to review it in your case. Also make sure that you have enough extracurricular activities; they might look at that too, in your situation. Other than that, I hope that you get in. Best of luck to you!

@lkj6778 Thanks for the comments. I will make sure to work on my extra curricular. I won’t be doing the cbe because i am not sure i can make a higher grade on that. What do you think makes a student stand out to be accepted to UT with a low GPA?
@karlmbagna Flawless essays, and maybe a reason or two on how you will improve from your low GPA and other mistakes at your community college. Also explain on what you want to do with your major at UT-Austin (research assistant, write for a scientific journal, internship) and your post-graduation plans. I think these reasons for your essay should make the committee believe that you will become a more competent and mature person and why they should accept you, and why your grades/gpa should not be the final answer to your decision. I hope you get in, and best of luck to you!
If you do change your mind to take the Chemistry 2 CBE, study more of your Chem 2 class material than the book. Reference the book in case you don’t understand something, or if you feel like a certain problem will be on the CBE. Hopefully you can learn from your mistakes, and that these will shape you into a better person for the future! Wish you the best of luck man! Believe in yourself!
I’ve never taken the cbe for Chem 2, but I know a few friends who have, to get ahead, and that was the advice they gave me. They did pretty well on the exam, to say the least.

@karlmbagna Focus more on your classes than your extracurriculars. That’s what the admissions committee focuses primarily on. They look at your extracurriculars just to see where you stand with the other applicants, and to see if there’s anything relevant that might help them make their final decision.
I am going to be attending CC for the first time this fall and I plan on transferring to UT by next fall. I plan on trying to get into COLA at UT and was wondering what GPA I should be looking towards. Also, since I wont have my 30 completed hours until the end of second semester, I know the UT website has said that they cant give an admission decision until they receive my final transcript showing proof of my 30 completed semester hours. Does this mean I wont get an answer until possibly early summer? Are my chances of getting in low because I have only met minimum credit hours? I also have plenty of extracurricular activities under my belt ALREADY. Is it harder for students to transfer after 1 year at CC as opposed to someone who went to CC for 2 years?
Hi, I’m hoping to transfer to CNS or liberal arts this spring.
GPA 3.45/4.0
Currently:
Calc 2
Intro Art
Intro Soc
Humanities
IF I make all A’s i’m looking at
3.65/4.0
I’m looking at Public Health and International Affairs
If I make a B: 3.55/4.0
@lkj6778 Do you think that having a previous college suspension decreases my chances of getting at UT? On the application, it asks if I have been suspended to the current college I’m going to. Currently I go to Houston Community College, but i got suspended from UT Tyler, so I don’t know if i should put yes or no.
Choose “no”. In the essay, discuss about why you got suspended from UT-Tyler and what you will do to learn from that mistake so it won’t happen again at UT-Austin. By doing this, I believe that the committee will not count the suspension against you in their final admission decision.
It depends on whether you are ellgible to return to UT-Tyler. UT Austin will not accept you for transfer unless you are eligible to re-enroll in all previous colleges you have attended.
