groovinhard described the typical American suburb, so it fits mine really nicely too. Obviously pot and alcohol, and suprisingly cocaine and ecstasy (which I haven't seen mentioned), are popular at my school. Prescription drugs are most likely popular as well (I don't know, I'm not involved in these things), with acid thrown in the mix. I've yet to hear of anyone doing heroin or crack, but you never know. But most kids are weekend stoners/drinkers and manage to maintain high grades and do plenty of school-related things while still having their fun. People I know who are at the top of the class have done pot or drank---it is no indication of intelligence or academic potential in the least. But I do think the kids who get high in school all the time or fall down drunk in the hallway are probably the ones who really have problems. Everything else is more of standard upper middle-class teenager behavior.

i live in a middle class town in michigan...suprisingly a kid who ended up at the top of the graduating class was a huge stoner.. He'd do pot, shrooms herione ectasy, drink you name it, i dont think i ever saw him sober..
Mostly my school just does pot, probably 70-80% of the school does, and theres a huge problem with drinking too, some cocaine and alot of kids abuse prescription drugs

Weed.........Good Stuff....No harm done
Doesn't affect my schoolwork or my life, i just have more fun. I'm in AP classes got into a good school and my life is set.
Crack, Heroine, E, Shrooms, Acid.......Don't mess with that ****.

Wait... who was the person who started this post? You say you went to highschool outside of Philadelphia, where at?

Well yea I kind of forgot about E and Shrooms and all, but those aren't really that prevalent. Ecstacy is pretty popular (for good reason) in more of a party people kind of way. You'd be surprised who has taken E, alot more than expected.

Shrooms are more isolated, as is LSD, coke has always been popular people are just more obvious about it now.

I guess where I live is to poor to do pot as described in all your posts. That seems to be more of a northern thing whereas where I live in Florida everyone likes to get wasted. Alcohol is abused quite often among basically anyone, our FCA took a huge hit a few years ago when some people who were leaders in it attended parties regularly and got drunk, sending out bad messages to everyone and it caused everyone to label FCA as a bunch of hypocrites.

Since then, that club has never really recovered to its status before, and now that I'm captain I have pledged to not drink or smoke at all, which so far I haven't. FCA doesn't really have that image anymore, but then again it doesn't have the members.

It is so shocking sometimes to find out who drinks. In high school people seem to think it's cool to get plastered, but in college I've heard that it's more of a social thing. Still, people that would NEVER drink in high school still go on in college and get wasted themselves. I only have one friend who hasn't voluntarily drunk in a party scene, and one other who has never gotten drunk. I guess I've just learned to live with it, but I still plan on my job in college to be the permanent DD.

[q]It's very possible to drink in moderation...not so easy to smoke pot in moderation...I think that's where the problem lies[/q]

I disagree. I think it's easier to quit pot than alcohol, at least from my experience with people. Pot is not physically addictive; alcohol is.

This thread is making me wonder...I am absolutely "straight edge", for a lack of better term. I don't ever, ever drink, I don't do drugs, I don't smoke, and I'm pretty conservative in my behaviour. And I don't plan on doing any of that in college (I'm not gonna even be 21 untill the last half of my senior year, and even then I don't plan on drinking except the way you would have a coke or coffee at dinner).

I'm wondering: Am I such an anomaly? Is there going to be anyone in college who has fun by the people they're with, not with what they're doing or what they're putting in their body? Even my high school friends think I'm weird for this, that everything changes in college.... =/

It might be a little unusual to be totally straight edge throughout college, but it's perfectly respectable. You can still have fun being around drunk/high people when you aren't. I often drive my friends around when they are like this, and I have a blast anyways. It's more fun to be shmated though, at least for me. But I enjoy taking breaks, I think it's wise. Probably wiser not to do it at all, though. Haha.

Well, gosh.

At my high school, there are always a few kids who come to school in the morning high or go and smoke pot during lunch. Once or twice a year there will be an incident with alcohol: last year a kid passed out drunk in class and had to be taken to the hospital. Then, of course, there's Smoker's Alley, across the street from the school, where some kids... well, smoke cigarettes. And probably other stuff, too.

But me? Nothing. Well, I mean, I can remember maybe 4 or 5 times I've ever drunk a whole alcoholic beverage by myself (usually I ask for sips from my mom's wine glass or something), and of those beverages, all but one was wine. The other was God only knows what--a customary Argentinian aperitif that they served to everyone except my then-10-year-old sister when we ate at a restaurant in Ecuador. It was pretty hard to get down: thick, sweet, and hard-alcohol based. I've never been drunk. I don't plan on being any more of a drinker than my parents, or specifically, my mom, who drinks a glass of wine or two at dinner. My dad drinks beer, mainly, which I don't like. (That's an opinion based on a sip he let me take when I was, like, 8 years old, so of course I didn't like it--but I won't be trying it again. I don't want to find out that I do like the stuff.)

But as for drugs and tobacco... NO WAY. I had an adult friend who chewed tobacco and I couldn't even look at him when he was chewing, because the idea of it was so disgusting to me. Cigarettes are about equally repellent. I absolutely abhor the smell! And the sliminess of the tobacco industry. I'm not interested in drugs, either. I don't like the idea of not being in control of my mind and body... and there is nothing I've ever heard about the drug experience that appeals to me. Nothing. I know plenty of more enjoyable, safer and more socially acceptable ways of having fun.

I hate parties. Hate them. Quiet gatherings for dinner and a movie at home with several close friends: perfect. Going for a hike with friends: perfect. A party or a dance with low lights, loud (bad) music and cheap, icky "refreshments"? Ugh! Get me outta there! No fun at all for me. I'd rather go to church with a friend than go to a party or him or her, and I don't even believe in God--if that gives you any idea of how little parties appeal to me. ~_^

I, personally, don't face any peer pressure to take drugs. I never have. I'm pretty sure my friends feel the same way about drugs as I do. Plus, most of them are your classic good (though in many ways socially and politically progressive) Christian kids whose families, I imagine, would flay them alive if they got too intimate with controlled substances. Heck, I'd have a few strong words to say, too, if I found out about any substance abuse at the hands of my friends. I'm probably still pretty naive about it, but what I have seen of drug abusers doesn't impress me... and I love my friends way too much to not put up a fight if they started down the same road.

Ummm... I also go to bed early. And it's now waaayyyy past my bedtime. :D (I guess my lifestyle is pretty down-to-earth. I think that's a pretty good way to describe it.)

Just like most of you, I come from an upper middle class school with lots of rich kids. In our school different groups do different stuff. The stoners obviously do pot, and most of the popular kids drink. But the smart people don't really do anything....hmm, or maybe they're just too afraid to damage their rep..?

My personal view on all this is that alcohol is a lot better than pot. But even pot is better than cigarettes. I've only tried drinking, mostly vodka, wine, and tequila a couple of times. Nothing too major, I'm a pretty good kid. The reason why I think drinking is a lot better than getting high is that when I drink I have an actual purpose, when I'm buzzed I get even more confident which is good. When you smoke pot you just sit on the couch and stare. What's the fun in that?

Just my opinion, but you know it's all bad. You just gotta pick your poison....

my school has a giant reputation in the region for being a hardcore booze & pot school. same story- rich neighborhood and not much to do.

i dont see what the big deal is with use. ABUSE, on the other hand, is the problem.

and its uber easy to get pot at my school, cheap too. there are many many people who smoke several times a day during school.

there was an underground pot and meth ring in my MIDDLE school (jr. high)...imagine what my high school's like. Although, we have a lot of smart kids who don't get involved. It's everyone else...

My school doesn't really do pot- they do hookah, mostly. Some of the seniors do pot, but like, it's not a major part of the social scene.

I do neither. ;) lol

That's not true. Different people have different reactions. It is very common for people to get super stoned and sit around zoning out, but I have some friends who get incredibly giggly, who fall asleep, who get incredibly shy, and some get little to no reaction at all....but I have a feeling that this is because they get high everyday.

My motto at the begining of junior year was: "Drinking is fine, smoking pot is bad, and cigarettes are out of the question"...now as a senior I have unfortuantley tried all 3 quite a few times. I DO enjoy being drunk. It's pretty occasional and I do incredibly stupid things while drunk, but for some reason I love it. I'm really glad that the first time I drank was in high school in a safe(er) enviroment because I don't want to be too naieve in college. Pot just isn't my thing. You can't think, you can't function, you can't carry on a conversation...nada. I have an exboyfriend who gets stoned EVERYDAY and it was sooooooo boring having to sit around and watch him entertain himself with a plant. Cigarettes are my biggest enemy. They are sooo addictive...it was almost instantaneous. I haven't smoked in 5 months, but it is sometimes really hard to avoid.

I live in Hawaii and we have a HUGE reggae influence around the islands so weed is extremely popular. I would say that at least 65% of the kids at my high school have gotten stoned at least once.

Anniushka...what part of Washington do you live in?

Surfette-- I live in northwestern Washington. Skagit County, if that means anything to you. :)

I just remembered: in my town there is a lot of meth. I don't know about high schoolers using the stuff, but in the past year, two meth labs were busted--both of them right next door to the high school (one of them next door to a daycare center), which also places them down the street from the middle school, an elementary school, and the police station.:mad:

I think we have the biggest meth population in the united states.

I was just wondering because your lifestyle seemed very similar to my cousins'...who live in Spokane.

heh, marijuana, the symbol of liberalism...

This thread just proves that the bottom 99% of society is detestable. Although I don't care what you do to your own body, in fact I'd rather you see you suffer for ODing more than anything else. Just don't tell me it's "good" and "fun" and expect me to agree with you.

Of course, I am the most diehard conservative (social) in my school so this is just my view.

There is a Meth lab a block from my house, or at least there was. I would never touch the stuff though.

Has anyone here noticed a clique/social stereotype element to the drug use in their schools?

Like, at my old school it was

Jocks drank a lot of beer/some liquor and had huge crashing loud parties
the artsy kids smoked a lot of pot/did shrooms/etc.
the really high-strung kids snorted adderall, etc.
the social outcasts (my old highschool was so socially stratified there was an outcast pecking order) did any of that they could get their hands on, plus dxm, etc.
