Survey: Tell us about your Early Decision experience

Early Decision season is wrapping up and I’m seeing articles like this one:

Obviously the admission rates depend very much on the sample of schools. This story also quoted the founder of an independent college counseling company who reported ~75% acceptance. I’m curious about the CC communities results. So I put together a series of polls for students and parents of students who applying this year.

It’s not a scientific survey, of course, but it should be an interesting look into the Early Decision landscape of 2022. Please answer either for yourself or if you are a parent, your student. (Ideally ask your student to signup for a CC account and answer for themselves, but we know that doesn’t always happen.)

  • I started looking at the financial aid package, but haven’t dug in yet.
  • I have a good idea of how to pay for school, but there are still details that haven’t been settled.
  • I know exactly what we will do to pay for college.
  • Someone else will handle the finances.

We did the financial pre-read that Whitman offers families beginning in July (I think it continues through December for EDII). The number they came back with made it possible to confidently apply ED, and S23 was accepted.

S23 was rejected from his ED1 school. He took the advice of his college counselor not to submit test scores because they were below the 25th percentile for '21-'22, but they would have been well within range for previous years. He is submitting his test scores for all his other schools, even the ones that have higher test score ranges. He’s already been accepted at two targets/safeties and should get into one more Canadian school.

I wonder how common that advice is? Seems to me there is a ratcheting effect that will result in fewer people submitting scores and admissions offices seeing higher scores from people who do submit. Nobody wants to have the lowest score among applications considered.

S23’s ED school was his top choice and was in-state tuition (Virginia Tech). It ended up being the cheapest school he applied to, so we’re pretty happy with that!

Student accepted to Penn ED. Submitted financial documents after accepting my spot still waiting on the aid package lol. Hoping I don’t get highballed.

Parent of a '27 Harvard restrictive early action acceptance!! What a relief. Here’s to a successful senior year for all you college bound students!

S accepted ED to Cornell (Engineering). Submitted SAT scores (1550). We were fine with the expected finances going in. He had his application ready for EDII at Johns Hopkins if Cornell rejected or deferred him.

D rejected from ED school (top LAC) and has been accepted at 2 safeties.

S23 deferred from Ivy ED (as a legacy) but has a nice EA offer already. 10 more decisions not coming until March.

D23 did not apply ED.

A post was split to a new thread: FAFSA questions

DS rejected from a rolling ED ahead of application for ED1 at another school. Accepted to the ED1 (Colgate). He is super excited. He did submit his scores.

Was the rolling ED for wake forest? (Assuming Wake b/c I can’t think of another highly competitive school with rolling ED - but maybe it just hasn’t made it on our list). My son was rejected as well and we were very surprised to get a flat rejection rather than deferral given family connection and he was within range from previous years. Colgate is fantastic. Congrats!!

Accepted ED (Wesleyan). Completely free for the first year because they meet demonstrated need. However, my family expects tuition to jump next year. We have plans so I graduate with minimum loans. I couldn’t be happier it was my dream school after we visited. No SAT score submitted but great grades and what I believe to be a great interview.

Smooth sailing. Mountainkid accepted ED to Penn. Expected contribution matched Net Price Calculator so kid accepted the spot in the Class of '27. Go Quakers!

Yep. WF. He was disappointed but took it in stride but ultimately super happy with Colgate and doesn’t feel like it is a second choice and I think it will be a better fit for him.

D23 admitted ED to Rice with a surprise merit scholarship (we are full pay). She submitted her SAT score (1560). She also heard back from two of her EA schools (Reed and UO Honors College). Reed is test blind so I don’t think SAT mattered.
