Swarthmore Early Decision Support Group

My math score was average. My CR was a 680, my writing 640, math 600. Obviously, my SATs weren’t fantastic, but I got a 700 on the lit subject test and two 600’s on Am.Hist and Math 1.

I know Swarthmore doesn’t look ONLY at SAT scores. I’m banking on the fact that I am 6th in my class of almost 400 and am in the process of being published. Along with various other EC’s and about 300 hours of community service, but I’m sure no one wants a copy of my resume haha.

did you guys interview either on or off campus?

I interviewed on campus and my interview went really well I think. Ms. Ayres (not sure if you know her) emailed me the next day thanking me for speaking with her. My guidance counselor seemed to think it was good that she emailed me almost immediately with information and then got the head of the humanities dept to contact me as well.

Have any of you done official over nights?

haha that makes me feel a litttttle better. i do have good sat II scores, its just my CR. (but i spent my childhood in a foreign country until like 5th grade, which is why my CR is low… so i hope that kind of makes up for it). i do have good EC’s too, and my essay, in my opinion, well expresses why swarthmore is the one and only choice for me. my school doesnt have class ranks though, but im pretty sure im around top 10%… idk. AHH i hate how i have no clue whats gonna happen. do you think theres a possibility that the letters are going to be coming in maybe starting thursday?

i interviewed on campus with Andrea Pien. i havent done official over nights, which is a bummer because i really wanted to do it. :(

I did an off campus interview and it think that it went really well…we talked about a lot of cool things not only about Swat, but current events, politics, and even what my favorite bands are. I actually haven’t visited campus, I haven’t had the opportunity since I don’t live near Swat.

It depends on where you live. As I said before my postal system is really bad. A letter of rec from my former teacher who is now at UPenn took almost 2 weeks and it seriously takes an hour and a half to drive down there…

Thursday is probably a good guess though. tieeris, the essays I know count for a lot and are a very large factor in the decision.

hjohnston2010 the campus is BEAUTIFUL! I fell in love the first time I visited over the summer.

I personally think that if we’re all posting on this then Swarthmore is the place for us, lets hope they see that we belong there too!

I feel like my essays were strong. My “Why Swarthmore” (in my opinion) reflects the different aspects of Swat that make it so appealing to me, while I tied it all to a line from a song. and my common app essay was about my political volunteer work.

yea, I agree, I just hope that the admissions committee feels the same way as we do!

my interview was okay… my interviewer seemed to be too willing to listen… if you know what i mean. i was the one mostly talking. haha. hm ive gone on campus twice actually, and both times i drove there all the way from michigan. thats how much i love swat! the campus is really nice. the first time i went it was raining, but it was REALLy pretty nonetheless. thanks belladilauro, you actually made me feel much better. lets hope for the best!!!

My common app essay was about how in 3rd grade I was “assigned” to help this new girl from the czech republic. I worked with her from 3rd grade to 5th grade; she started out not talking to anyone and by 5th grade she had made a total turn around. I tied it all into how she helped me find my voice while I helped her to find hers. Also, how I have continued to help others find their voices.

My “Why Swarthmore” essay I thought was a lot stronger. I wrote about how I would benefit from being at Swarthmore and how Swarthmore would benefit from having me as a student. Also, I talked about how the academics are perfect for me and so is the social scene. I tied it all in with my search for the perfect car and college this past summer.

I’m glad I could help because I have been agonizing for the past few weeks. If I was a dean of admissions I would accept you guys! :)

I think my common app essay was much more stronger, just because it didn’t take me long to write…I knew what I wanted to say.

my Why Swat essay took much longer, and many drafts, because I wanted to make sure that it was perfect and that it represented me in every aspect, which I believe it did.

That’s great! I’m so excited now and a little less nervous! Thanks everyone :)

yea, I am going to bed with a much better peace of mind than I was last night!

hm. my why swarthmore essay talks about basically me discovering swarthmore. i have a big passion for becoming a vet(ever since i was little), and swarthmore has sent 16 out 16 students to vet schools over the last 10 years or so… this is how i first encountered swarthmore. one of my middle school teachers once discouraged me by saying that is “impossible” to get into a vet school, but swarthmore actually helped me regain my hope… and i expanded on how swarthmore has turned a dead hope into a possibility. i also talked about how i couldnt spell my name right on the campus visit card the first time i visited because i was so nervous and excited lol.

I talked about the social justice aspect of Swat…and how I feel I would have the greatest opportunity to change the world in a positive way if I attended Swat.

haha wow. it seems you all have really unique essays. my essay kinda talks about me making a change, but most of it is how swarthmore has impacted me. i hope that impresses the admission officers… ahh ive been on this discussion forum for hours, i still need to go do my spanish homework lol!

Gosh - I seem to have missed some major developments! I’m so excited now. I couldn’t believe what you said (belladilauro, I think) about decisions being mailed the week after Thanksgiving two years ago! I very nearly had a heart attack. Now that I know that they aren’t necessarily aiming to have them out ON the fifteenth - that they could come out quite literally any day now - I’m going to be a nervous wreck every day waiting for school to end so I can get to my mailbox!

About ED numbers, I don’t know that only having 100 letters the day before the deadline was indicative of a smaller pool; I know schools get the vast majority of their applications ON the deadline. I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers have fallen slightly because of the economy, but I’d be willing to bet that the difference won’t be too extreme. Unfortunately.

I did do an overnight, which was a great experience (and extraordinarily helpful for my Why Swat  ). I did my interview on campus with Jim Sawyer. I’m pretty introverted, so I don’t do well with interviews in general, but…we shall see whether it affected things.

Here’s hoping that The Letters come soon!

i feel that 100 ED the day before IS a smaller pool… because… don’t most people apply the day before the deadline? i don’t know about others, but for me, i felt like applying on the deadline was risky (because i thoght it might be late after a certain time). i applied two days before just in case, but i mean, if people are dedicated enough to apply ED, it’s likely that they weren’t trying to take any chances. of course many people would apply on the deadline, but i still think 100 is a strangely low number.

I was super-paranoid and applied a week before the deadline, but apparently, that’s the exception rather than the rule. This weekend I saw something (in the Atlantic, I think) saying that about half of all applicants apply on the deadline, both early and regular. That was 2001 though, which was probably before a lot of the online application stuff, so maybe things have changed. We shall see, I suppose - I wish Swarthmore did like other schools and posted application information now; I need something to obsess about. Although, plainly, their reticence has not stopped me from obsessing!
