I’m considering to take some classes as Credit/Non Credit on Spring 2009.

My questions are…

If it is IGETC courses, will it hurt my chance?
(I’m planning to transer to Apply Maths-Cal, Apply Maths/Econ-UCLA)

Is it possible to change the major from Apply Maths to Econ once Cal admits me?
(Chance major, not double major)

What is the average GPAx of admitted students for Apply Maths, Cal?
and What’s the average for Econ, Cal?

Your prompt advice will be highly appreciated.

1.) it is fine to take an IGETC class as p/np as long as it is not a prereq for your major…I took biology as p/np before transferring to Cal… although I personally wouldn’t take more than one class p/np for your IGETC requirements

2.) this is for anyone trying to change majors once you are here at Cal… it is VERY easy to do, way more easy than I thought… several of my friends are in completely different majors than the one they applied as intended for Cal (with the exception of Haas)

Considering you’re not even technically admitted to the major you applied as once you go to Berkeley, I’d imagine it’s not hard to change majors at all (if you even want to call it that).

In my opinion, it’s hard to change majors. My cousin was admitted to UC Berkeley as a freshmen. But his story was diff. He transferred into the college of engineering which is the most difficult in Cal. Maybe L&S transfers are easier/different.

I highly recommend you to check your college’s policy. My college does not allow IGETC courses to be taken Credit/No Credit. It is stated on the IGETC document, “A
ll IGETC courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.” So, check your college catalog or approach a counsellor to clarify your college’s policy on IGETC.

I think many colleges have different policies on taking IGETC courses P/NP, but the rule of thumb is that you NEVER take math or English courses P/NP (unless they’re nontransferable).

Cr3… that’s really strange that your college does not let you take any IGETC courses p/np… both my husband and I went to two totally different colleges and we both took an IGETC class p/np, neither of our CCC had a problem certifying us and we both transferred to Cal. Even though it says on the form that the class has to be taken w/ a C or better that is what a p/np is, you can’t get a p w/out a c or better so that’s why we never had a problem. Can I ask what CCC you go to? I am really curious about that

My counselor once told me the same thing, “you will need to get a letter grade in order to be IGETC certified.” Although, I heard a P is considering a C which defeats the previous statement.

If there is anything I learned at community college it is that most community college counselors are absolutely clueless. YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!! I called Cal and UCLA and made sure that it was ok for me to take IGETC courses as P/NP.

Did they tell you up to how many IGETC courses you can take P/NP? I honestly find it odd that they were OK with you taking your IGETC math course as P/NP.

fijeeboi, I totally agree with you. Many of the CCC counselors are worthless. BUT, I have to say, the counselor I meant has really been helpful toward my educational plans. She graduated from CAL. ANYWAYS… that can’t prove much, but I did think about it myself: if courses can be taken P/NP for IGETC, a persona can easily have a 4.0 by having one A and F*** up on the rest of them… Does that make sense? Maybe I am completely wrong but I hope I made a point.

Still, I find it odd that an actual Berkeley and UCLA rep told you it was OK to take your only transferable math class as P/NP. I mean, I can see them being alright with taking a social science/humanities course as P/NP, but math is such a core basic class that I’d expect them to see nothing less than a letter grade for it (especially if it is your only transferable math class).

Who is Sleeper to be questioning the answer that I received from the Berkeley rep? I’m sitting here in the library, at UC Berkeley, typing this post. If the rep was wrong, I wouldn’t be here right now.

chibi is right, you’re totally overreacting. I don’t question what the rep told you or else, like you said, you wouldn’t be at Berkeley now. Still, I can’t help how I feel. I’d encourage people NOT to take English or math IGETC courses as P/NP, but it’s up to you if you want to take the chance.
