The "BEST" watch?

OK Parents and all KPers...

Which WATCH do you like best for your time at KP? Which watch has been especially useful on ship/etc?

I'd really like to know which watch you have (or want), and what you like best about it for how you are using it. Please be as descriptive as possible... I'm trying to figure out what to buy, and when to present. I really don't want to get a watch that will get my kid mugged in his first port or first outing into the City --Thanks / Z

From the Dad: I've been looking at a really nice black plastic Timex from Walmart, water-resistant to 10 feet. ;) for him. (No, not really).

From the P/C: My kid, however, sent me a link for a fancy black titanium(?) fancy chronograph(name they use when price cracks $400?) with date, time, depth/altitude, water salinity, wave interval, tide index, world bus schedules, international flight schedule, Disney Fastpass generator, universal remote, R2D2 communications link, and Batmobile summoner. (OK. maybe that's not the REAL list... but suffice it to say it's fancy).

Now, if there's one that has an electric cattle-prod to jolt the P/C awake in the mornings, that would be a PLUS :p

OK, MountaineerMom, start your timer... Let's see how quickly the response roll in ! (Seriously, thanks for your help, in advance)

Congratulations on your son's decision to become a Naval Aviator. It will be an excitiong career.

i have a simple timex with an alarm and it worked great for me all year.....why get something flashy it's not like you have anyone to impress at school. i would get one that that allows you to have 2 different times on it that way when at sea you can have one set to GMT--if he is a deckie of course

Hold up Zonker! Your son is a sailor ~ you may want to look at watches you can set for regattas. I'll p/m you with the info once I get it. But I must say, I like that Disney pass option....lol.

i have a really nice watch that my parents gave me for graduation, but when i ship out, it's going in a drawer... a 10 dollar walmart special will then be my timepiece, so that if i destroy it, no big deal. why does your son think he needs all those bells and whistles on his watch? it's a watch... i'd say don't spend a boatload if you're looking for something to take to sea. get one that works and if it breaks, you just get a new one... no issue. :)

Ah. Great wisdom being shared.

But I'm still busy wiping coffee off the screen and drying out the keyboard after reading USNA69's response ! :D :D :D

(Well said, and thanks)

yep, my ds's watch of choice for sea year was a Walmart watch be bought a few days before he left. I Don't even know what bells or whistles it had on it.

His "good" HS graduation watch is at home. Safe. Where it will be when he gets home.

familiar stories...son had a good watch when he left for kp and in the end of his plebe year it had problems keeping the water seal when he dove or was swimming.. We bought him a timex at target just before he went to sea. It has been perfect for what he needs..water tight to pretty deep waters and durable. we plan to get him a nice watch for xmas..soo looking forward to your ideas

forgot to mention, he found a real nice "rolex" in Yantian China last month and what a price...he he???

that store in China has a branch in Chinatown in lower Manhattan, $25 for a Rolex after much negotiating.

My s picked up a timex from the ship store right after indoc

The Timex titanium Ironman watch is what I bought my son. He said it was the best thing I bought so far since he got to the school besides the air purifier.

The best watch is the
4AM-8AM

on the forepeake

watching the Sunrise
over the bold Atlantic

^^^ Son said he begs for the midnight to 4am watch because he's never seen stars so bold, perfect & bright. Must be so beautiful. I've seen the sunrise on open water but never the stars due to the clouds. Someday...... :)

on the forepeak??? on my ship you wouldn't see much.. except maybe the FP tanktop, bosn storeroom or the sperling pipes.. the focsle deck is where you want to be.
The view from the bridge ain't bad either..

ok ok

ill take the bridge at sunrise
an Atlantic hiding its fury
and an endless mug of Jamaican joe

Its always also nice
if the Moon is really big and setting on
the same horizon

and there nobody else awake

I like that
but it only happened once

Supermansmom has it.....my son was directed to the same watch by a KP grad who sailed with Dennis Connor on Stars & Stripes....thinking he should know his stuff! So Zonker....this one is good for sailors. Cost under $100.

timepiece ?
whatever cell phone
gps
computer
radar
radio
or other electronic device
all nearby
most all have

watch ?
early morning
balmy sea
black coffee

I have a Timex Ironman Triathlon and it's worked very well for me at sea. It has two different time zones (I leave one on GMT and the other on the ship's time), a 24-hour clock (very handy) and has big numerals for quick glancing. It also has "Flix Technology", which allows you to just flick your wrist and the illumination lights - you don't have to reach over and push a button. Also has 5 different alarms and unlike most watches, it's actually loud enough to wake me up. Also has the standard chronometer and count-down timer. I bought it for $40 at an NEX in Norfolk.
