The Indian Thread #19

The best dialogue of 2010!

hey, i’m an international.I was just going through this thread and found that the current discussions in this thread are related to the IITs and not US college. Guys, can any of u tell, who from India, got into Lehigh this year??
PM me if u know!
And gud luck with ur apps
:)

DreamsUnlimited-There’s nothing wrong with spreading an IIT education per se, but the solution to expanding the reach of IIT isn’t opening 8 branches in the span of a year. What makes IIT a powerhouse of learning isn’t merely the name, it’s the quality of teaching and facilities they offer. They should concentrate on hiring quality teachers and developing world class facilities in the older IITs instead of opening up multiple branches that simply bear the name with no assurance of excellence. This is an educational institution, not a business. If they succeed in the above goal and have enough resources left, then expansion is justified. The oft repeated phrase ‘Quality over quantity’ is appropriate for this case. Compscifan put it very well in his above analogy.

I believe differently Nemo. IIT is IIT because of its students. Quality of teaching at all IITs including IIT-Delhi is crap. It’s the four years you spend learning from, growing and competing with some of the nation’s brightest minds that makes an IITian.

^Is it? Well I’m not one to comment since that was my basic impression from my uncle who went there years ago.
All the more reason to focus on quality teaching and facilities than expanding like a fast food chain, no?

I agree that it’s probably better than that at most other engineering schools in India. I expect every IIT does have a few of those teachers who make a difference, but from what I hear from my friends, most of the work has to be done by you.

IIT Jodhpur >>> The best private engg college of India.

I don’t have anything more to say.

Yeah, I admit I was bit harsh on IIT Jodhpur.
But still, it hasn’t even been allocated a campus yet. First, it was IIT Kanpur that gave IIT jodhpur a place on its campus. Then IIT Jodhpur came to MBM college (which you would know of, dreamsunlimited?).
Now, its been given a campus which is set to be completed some 3 yrs from now! (and that BTW, is miles off the Jodhpur city on some isolated place)

I mean, I ride past IIT Jodhpur almost everyday and believe me, even the board (which says IIT
Jodhpur welcomes you) is covered with random pamphlet and posters.

An IIT deserves better.

Woah, that is a seriously misinformed statement. IIT Jdh is light years behind. (BITS, VIT, RVCE, BIT etc )

On a related note, I saw wikipedia pages of IIT kan, del, mum etc. alums. Soooooooooo many of them are/were profs in MIT, Caltech, Berkeley etc!!!

Please don’t call the quality of teaching at IITs ‘crap’? Note that I’m not arguing. Just asking you to tone down your words. ;)

Dreams, really? I doubt so.

If you are given a choice between VIT and IIT, Jodh (assuming same branch/ stream), which one will you choose?

Now you give me the answer.

BITS Pilani> VIT

Uhh c’mon IIT Jodhpur will be cheaper. ;)

I would choose BITS Pilani over IIT Jodhpur. (BITS Pilani gives me the program that I want)

0

Obviously BITS > VIT >> IIT Jdh.
Haha, I was getting Pharmacy in Pilani this year.

Debarghya, I apologise. It was wrong on my part to have said that.
My point was simply that IIT is what it is mainly because of its students. :)

^And I agree. :)

Haha, I’m a Desi-Born Indian American.

I wouldn’t consider the IIT’s for college…haha mainly because I’m not interested in engineering!

Guys, anyone knows how these results come out?

Is it the same procedure as ED?
How about the liberal arts colleges?? Do they send individual emails???

PS- two days spent waiting and already so impatient!..:(

Hi Deperado. I wonder what will happen to you by April!
Most schools including LACs tell us by email since we’re international. Or they’ll provide a link to the decisions page.
Yes, the process is the same as ED. Bdw, did you apply ED anywhere?

I’ve decided. If I ever have to go through college application process again, I’d rather stay illiterate. Doing all that packaging of transcripts, yada yada was so time consuming and monotonous.

^ I agree… and those awful checklists!! They neverrrr seemed to end!! Phew!! And not to mention the ongoing anxiety regarding the sorry state of affairs( read: studying for boards)!! Man I feel like someone fate has decided to make a pendulum!! Swinging to and fro… God knows where we’d land up!!

Yep, I did ED to Cornell, and am a defer! ( So now I have to think again what more to do…such a bummer!)…

Oh, I sooo love rolling admissions… at least we’re spared the Wait! Oh, wait, we’ve got another bumper bummer in our lives: final exams!! ( Yeah, that’s equally excruciating!)

Oh haan, you guys also have the boards coming up. Keep up those grades.

No more exams for us, gap year applicants.
Heehohahaha

^I did want to feel happy reading your post, but you know very well that we’re in a far more desperate situation than them. If we mess our exams even one bit this time, it’s game over.
