The Indian Thread #19

If this is your most important reason, then it’s a very bad one.

Better, but there shouldn’t be any “perhaps” or “here and there”. As Arunemo wrote, gap year students have definite plans. I’m a gap year student myself, and I took mine for personal reasons (nothing to do with American or Indian colleges) but one thing I’ve observed is that most of the plans I made at the beginning of the year came to naught, so be careful.

Okay . :(

^Lol. Forget this conversation for now. Wait for the current admissions season results first, and then ask such questions.

Does anyone know anything about wellesley or smith?

^Hi anjali, I have applied to those two as well. Go Wellesley! And um Smith. I like MHC more than Smith now though. Smith has no core requirements while MHC does have a few. MHC also has a bigger international community, and South Hadley is hardly more rural than Northampton… Apart from that MHC and Wellesley are more alike than anyone would think. Plus both have yellow as class of 2015 colours! Dunno when decisions come out although Early Evaluation for Wellesley should be out any day now I think.

Tiya- Welcome to TiT 19! Which city are you from?

PS- Rsaksena has given some really nice advice! What did you do in your gap year btw rsaksena and compscifan? Anything apart from Engg. prep I mean?

If I ever take a gap year then it would be for Law prep. Heck, I would forgo attending HYP for National Law School Bangalore. (not that getting into any of these is a surety for me)

Yay Bangalore!

Thanks pixie!I really like Wellesley. Where have most people on the thread gone before? Is it mainly engineering. I’m having trouble making my list. Sorry if i keep annoying with questions :(

The boys tend to go for engineering while the girls here are more into humanities related subjects for their major. But there are exceptions. I’m currently torn b/w physics and non science (eg. econ); Math. ANother user here, Bubbles, wants to get into Med school.
We’ve all had trouble making our list haha. I’m a little busy atm, but feel free to ask any questions! The last batch went to Penn, Smith, Brown, Minnesota, Columbia/Northwestern, Buffalo, Amherst, Reed among others (and I’m sure I’m missing many).

So overall, you applied to …say … about 15-20 colleges??

^
:confused:I was talking about where the previous batch went. I haven’t applied to half of those.

Yeah I am thinking of humanities or econ/business with bio maybe. Thank you so much for answering my questions! It’s so hard to make the list when you haven’t seen the school!

:)

I’ll wait till youtube buffers that looong video for me. Fast internet/broadband/connection-speed is one of the reasons that I’m going to US:)

Use good ol’ Google!

^You can always get Tata Indicom’s 21.1 Mbps internet in India!

Hey perfectpixie! I’m from Kolkata. And you and I seem to have very similar interests. I’m also torn between physics and non-science, and I’m also in awe of NLS. I don’t like Bangalore though, but that’s a story for another post. Will you be taking the CLAT this year then?

Anjali, I love Wellesley too. It seems like a very good college with strong science as well as non-science programs. It is one of the best college areas of the country, so if the girls’ college thing is putting you off a bit(it did for me initially), don’t worry, there are plenty of boys from the various colleges around the place to socially interact with, and provide the entertainment boys generally provide when they’re around. My mother went to a conference there last year, and she was very impressed with their resources, teaching staff’s general attitude, etc. Although she isn’t very US-college admissions-savvy, she seemed to like the feel of the place a great deal. And I do too! Not any constructive advice, but well, I just love ranting about Wellesley.

We’re indians so we always pick safe majors :P

Pix you forgot Denison and Purdue. AND MIT :expressionless: :P

And itsmylife, an education program in France won’t help much, to be honest. Prepare for the olympiads/APs/A-Levels… Stuff like that! Why, you ask? Because acads are the main thing in admissions and since you’ve already got music and whatnot so they know that you’re well-rounded :)

Hello people.
My best friend just got into Stanford.
One’s already in Yale.
I’m gonna have rich friends.
YES!

@itsmylife99: Your video reminds me of this nice video [YouTube - IIT - Indian Institute of Technology - World’s Best Educational Institutes & Pride Of India](<a href=“IIT - Indian Institute of Technology - World's Best Educational Institutes & Pride Of India - YouTube”>IIT - Indian Institute of Technology - World's Best Educational Institutes & Pride Of India - YouTube) that I once stumbled upon. Its much shorter and features some very good snippets of interviewes with people like Narayan Murthy and others.

Don’t get misled by the title though. :)

IIT is, indeed, the best in the world.
It has a lower acceptance rate than Harvard if you do the math.

Hi Chromey!

@ Chromey How did your friend just get into Stanford…little too early for admission decisions?

What were their stats like anyways?
