Guys, when are we going to have TiT #21 ??
@everyone: Are you doing/did you do any JEE coaching?? I am finding the SATs and JEE a little hard to manage. How is everyone here doing ??

@texaspg - couple of months back, 60 minutes did a story on Khan academy and how one of the local CA school is incorporating that. Check it out if you haven’t seen it, it had Bill gates as well about his investment in the academy and about how he really wanted to keep it free for all. By the way, where did your D commit to ?
@tizil - a friend’s D just got off yale wl. Again, I firmly believe in - it is not where you go but what you do. Above all, go where you can fit, be it a top 20 or a top 120.
@mrinal - what are the options in India other than IIT or NIT. I still strongly believe in undergrad in India if one gets a chance at a reasonably reputed place.

Mrinal, I’m doing JEE prep along with SAT/ACT’s and its very exhausting. It doesn’t help that they are completely different from each other in almost every aspect.

fall2016parent, you mean only for engineering? There are some excellent schools apart from the IIT’s and NIT’s. Mainly BITS, VIT and BHU are the leading ones. However for research oriented science schools, IIS(Indian School of Science) is arguably one of the best.

Mrinal, whenever you want ;)

F16Parent, I know but I almost always get impatient in such matters, when I know I shouldn’t.

Here are some suggestions according to the places where most of my friends are trying: Manipal Institute of Tech, BITS Pilani, BITS Goa, Vellore Institute of Tech, DTU (DU?), Stephens (DU), IIST, Hindu (DU), NID. Also, JEE and SAT/AP/Essays are poles apart. Two years ago, most of my friends left the former for the latter and unfortunately couldn’t get into the US colleges they wanted and are now between a rock and a hard place.

If ever you decide to leave one for the other, don’t do so because you deem the other to be easier. It’s just as difficult and not an easy way out. This is a truth seldom acknowledged :p

Also, BITS Hyderabad and NSIT for you Delhiites :p

do all colleges now require entrance exams? yes, those are all good public, how about any reputable privates? I thought SATs are done much before JEE. Better to get the SAT done by early 11th grade? By the way, way back I was in wait list for BITS Pilani but it never materialized, chose NIT instead. Still wonder how life would have turned out. Guess all worked out in retrospect :)

Well, Amity University seems to be the new ‘in’ thing among affluent students, but it isn’t, in my opinion, reputable in the full sense of the word. It is still, however, one of the most visible and one of the better private universities out there.

Yes, but as you may know, the preparation for the JEE, now mostly sourced through feeder coaching centers in tier X, A, B-1 and B-2 ([Classification of Indian cities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Classification of Indian cities - Wikipedia)) cities in India spans throughout the length of 11th and 12th grade.

And believe me, when I heard those “teachers” encourage me to study 10 hours a day on a school day every day … it was disheartening to say the least. Also, maths, the beautiful subject that I had known it to be was reduced to the deplorable form of memorizing answers so that they can be used in further questions. Anyway, I digress.

Which NIT was it? Did you know that NRIs now have a easy entry into NITs through a quota? :)

That’s what I wonder about how events would’ve turned out if I had taken the Class XII boards…

We went to the Agarwal classes but now looks like folks go to other academies, it is insane. We were lucky not to have entrance for the NIT, was called REC then. Can’t disclose which one as we have strong alumni here and would rather remain annonymous  No, my D is more in biz/econ so guess the NRI quota wont be useful. Her dream college is actually Berkeley as we are in this area. Here you are either a stanford person or Cal and she is the latter. Actually, getting into Berkeley Engg is very very hard, so you have already accomplished a lot. I know many Indians here in CA are having to go to OOS or settle for a lower tier UC.

Tizil: No, I am not leaving one for the other. I strongly believe that one should not runaway from hard work. But, the JEE prep is becoming more and more tedious and I am scared that I may not have time for any more ECs and essays. I am trying hard to balance the two. -_-
In FIITJEE, we are given Question sets everyday for each subject( PCM ) consisting of 200 problems. We need to submit them in 4 days. Plus, we have school too, so another couple of hours study for school work. I have completely left the ACT prep now, only expecring a 33-the same as the last time. This is why I am fretting over what is going to happen in the coming months…and with the CommonApp coming out in August, it is going to be hell right on earth
Tomorrow, we have the JEE results  ;)

F16Parent: I know of Agarwal classes  From what I heard over the past two years though, it doesn’t seem to have the same level of respect afforded to it as the new ones like VMC, FIITJEE, etc. Was REC Kurukshetra the craze at that time? :stuck_out_tongue: Is your daughter also applying to any east coast schools? And I think I have a logic for your last statement. It’s because of a mismatch of high expectations on the parents part and a sense of complacency on the kids part. Maybe.

Mrinal, that wasn’t my point. It’s just that it is very difficult to balance both these extremely strenuous things. Most people can barely manage one deftly. So what I’m saying basically, is that beware of not giving both things enough attention :)

Thank You Tizil!! I was getting complacent after 11th, that brought me back on track. I do plan to set specific times for both SATs and the JEE. :)

@ F16P: A little help here, how do I go from Newark-EWR (have some business there)to Providence, RI?? Bus, Shuttle…any of them would do. :)

Mrinal - I think Amtrak (Train) from Newark to Providence is pretty convenient, check this out [Amtrak - Reservations - Fare Finder](Amtrak). Takes less time than bus https://www.greyhound.com/</a>
You are all by yourself? If you can have a friend help you in Newark, that will be great. Good luck !

But you may get some input from the Brown CC, as students probably commute from NJ all the time.

Tizil - I think REC warangal and REC rourkela were the big ones those days. No, I didn’t go to either  Yeah, I want her to consider East coast but obviously she has a year to go. I don’t think she will get into hypms, as there are at least 10-15 kids in her class who are just outstanding and the schools will only take so many. I don’t really care where she goes…as long as one is able to adjust and do well, that really matters. She is more of a UCB/UCLA fit so far …and like you, she also likes big colleges, not the LACs…

Thanks for the link F16P  Booked the tickets, I think I got off cheap, under a 100 bucks.
These days in India, I think that the IITs; NITs; BIT Mishra; BITS Pilani; Manipal; VIT are the prestigious engineering colleges, but Tizil already mentioned them. Warangal still has some reputation though, I have some friends applying there.

Warrangal is an NIT. Won’t recommend it though, located in a Naxal-infested area.

ah, when is the TiT for 17’ers coming up? :P

Those who took the JEE this year, care to share your results??
rew: My exact question. ;)

Not very good haha ^

Pratyush: You already have Cal, what more do you want?? :p
