congratulations iamthebist, manrosh!
@iamthebest: What are your stats?

Congratulations to you and your daughter Manrosh! :)

Congrats @manrosh and your daughter! This is a wonderful scholarship!

@p25india - thanks…well my SAT 1 is 2140 and SAT 2 ( P C MII ) is 2400. Okayish ECs.

Don’t patronise yourself Bist! You have amazing ECs :D

I have a question, and it may sound ignorant, but I really need to know. While going through some of the threads on CC, I have come across a number of people applying in the fall of 2013 claiming they have already started working on their essays. But, doesn’t the common app for our batch comes out somewhere in early August and only then can we see the essay topics? I may be completely misinformed, so please help me out? Thanks :)

Commonapp essays have not changed over the past 3-4 years. So you could work on one of them if you wanted. Even if they change, they will still have an open topic which means any essay you write can fit the open topic.

The above also applies to some of the supplements from colleges. In reality, if you write essays about certain topics (think service, research, work experience, your life, something that means a lot to you, your dreams, aspirations, why you want to do engineering, why a college etc.) they will find their way into something.

Oh okay! Thank you :)

Hi .
I needed some advice from my fellow countrymen.(Too flamboyant lol )
I got accepted at U of Minnesota and SUNY Buffalo for Electrical Engineering, and hopefully expecting acceptance at Purdue also .
So, Just wanted to hear out your opinion as to which college is better and why.

Thank you

I haven’t heard of U of M and even though I know the name SUNY Buffalo, I don’t know much about the institution itself.

However, Purdue is a very nice university. It’s quite well known for its strong engineering programs and should provide you with ample research opportunities. If you’re looking for further quirkiness like the weather, student population, STR or other things, you should probably visit Purdue’s forum on CC or its website.

Purdue. Because I have heard its name and I applied there too
No, but seriously, Purdue is reputed in engineering.

Purdue , no doubt is an eminent engineering college but a bit out of my parent’s budget . So I was a bit concerned . Though I have seen my friend’s friends choosing U of Minnesota over purdue . I dont know why . But I suggest or request you to do some research over U of M and let me know . I would be unfathomably thankful .

Btw, Charles Babbage was from U of Minnesota :P

U of minnesota:twin cities is really good for chemical engineering(a lot better than Purdue) but i am not sure about electrical engineering.
Its a great university anyway so chosing U of M over Purdue if it fits ur budget is not a bad idea.

Choose U Minn. Apart from the super cold climate, everything’s great. Affordable tuition costs, great university and quite reputed as well. I don’t know much about Buffalo so I can’t say anything for that…

@tarun2012 I lived on the University of Minnesota campus for a very, very long time, and know the EE/CS department professors very well. I think it’s a wonderful place. The architecture is gorgeous and the campus makes for a great learning environment, I think. Also, Minnesota is a more “education forward” state than most, with the 2nd highest average/median SAT and ACT scores out of all states (there are more statistics as well). That means that the Minnesotan kids who go into the U of M are “smarter” than most state-college-bound kids, so you already have a good peer body that is more likely to form a supportive learning community.

The twin cities themselves are a wonderful place to be; they are a very quaint and supportive set of cities Everyone talks about how cold Minnesota is and all of that, but honestly, everyone in Minnesota loves winter! The sparkly snow and ice festivals, the wonderful feeling you get when you dash into a warm building after a cold evening out, etc etc! It really fosters a sense of community.

U Minn if you plan on staying for 4 years. Buffalo if you plan on transferring. Purdue over both if you get in. My two cents.

@Tarun 2012- Good or bad depends on many factors and you need to research on the internet based on what you are looking for e.g academic programme, campus life, weather etc etc and there is no uniform opinion.finally decide on what your heart says yes to.
remember the movie;3 idiots!!!

Hi guys! So I read the Indian forum regularly and got to learn a lot, and I thought I should get involved in the discussions since I am also a '16er and sort of “pay back”. :P

To start off, a link to an article on fall 2012 application numbers.

Know thy enemy(-ies)! :D

[A Rising Tide of Applications to Harvard Appears to Crest - NYTimes.com](A Rising Tide of Applications to Harvard Appears to Crest - The New York Times)

Lets add to this list (with Indian times). I’m sooo going to stay up every damn night and end up screwing my boards MIT is on Chem-Board day. And I’m pretty sure whichever way it goes Chem is going to feel pretty neglected.

MIT:
15th March, 0030

Harvard:
March 30, 0330

Stanford:
April 2nd, 0430 (scheduled)
but most likely
March 31st,0430

Columbia: March 31, 0330

Princeton: March 31, 0330

UCB: March 29 (Online) (29-ish night;30-early morning for us?)

Duke: March 26/April 2

And ofc, correct. And add.

Usually Ivies try not to be behind Harvard. So I suspect they will come out at the same time and Stanford probably even earlier than 29th.

I have seen a note from Columbia stating they will be sending packages on 29th (or 30th in India).
