felix: your experience was an aberration. Interviewers are explicitly told not to comment on the student’s chances (since we honestly have no idea). If the guy said: “if you weren’t qualified, i wouldn’t be here.” – then he was speaking through his hat.

You know who “qualifies” for a Yale interview? Your materials arrived in Yale’s admissions office and you’re still breathing. That’s it.

oh, lol, i don’t know you besides what you post on the forums. i am a long-time lurker (though i made this account last week). but you seem cool and i am intrigued by your interests. sorry if i seemed like a total creeper : (

@felixfelicis: I’m curious. You said you were totally unprepared for the first question in your interview. Would you mind sharing what that question was?

Chances are it’s up to the interviews to ask whatever questions they want, and thus each interviewer asks different questions… but your request for specific interview questions a little unethical? I mean, I’d find it comparable to asking someone with, say, 1st period AP Chem (when you have 5th period, etc), “What are the questions on the test?”

At any rate I think it would be better to not know exactly what the interviewer is going to ask you so your answers are more genuine and represent who you really are, not some manufactured figment of your imagination that you represent so you can get in.

While I agree that your answers should be genuine and not too rehearsed, it is good to prepare for certain questions. Maybe not pry into the personal questions of this particular interview, but it is still good to practice with some common questions.

I totally understand what you are saying. I was looking at it more as a good way to practice preparing for the interview, for it is highly unlikely that my interviewer (if I get one) will ask the same question.

Felixfelicis, if you’d rather not share the actual question, I’m perfectly ok with that. I was just wondering what kind of question would be so “off-kilter” that it would throw off the beginning of your interview.

Also, if it’s any consolation- my on-campus interview was not the best, either. I’m hoping it won’t detract too much from my application.

I had my interview this evening. I thought it went quite well, the only odd bit was when the interviewer asked what other schools I was looking at - I mentioned Dartmouth, Chicago, & Brandeis. Was that a wrong answer?

@HADC10 no i think that was a good answer. they don’t assume we aren’t applying to any other schools, and it’s good that you didn’t say “harvard princeton stanford mit” so you don’t sound like a name grub :)

I turned in my application on 10/31 and haven’t received an interview yet. I’m live very close to San Francisco. I don’t think when you submitted your application affects when you receive an interview, though.
