The University of Texas Dorms

the honors dorms, and littlefield and kinsolving (all female dorms) are near the natural science classes

what are the chances of me (not in honors) getting into an honors dorm? and i applied in relatively early april: what are the chances of me getting into prathers or so? or will i probably end up in jester?

i hear from everyone that jester is the party dorm, and its fun and sociable but what about the times when you need to study? do you have to go to the library? or is jester not rowdy all the time?

unless you’re rooming with a friend that’s in honors, you probably won’t get in an honors dorm. you probably won’t get prather either since most upperclassmen apply for that dorm as well as brackenridge and roberts. early april is a little late to apply for dorms so you might be placed in Jester. but still put the dorms you want in the order you want them, cause you never know.

jester will definitely be more quiet during finals week, but the reason that Jester is loud is that the walls aren’t so good at keeping noise confined. so if someone living nearby is playing their music loud, it’ll be pretty disruptive if you’re trying to study. When i stayed in Jester during orientation, I could hear people walking past my room and doors closing nearby.

quick question, are the people who live in Moore-hill mostly freshman or upperclassmen?

The people in every dorm are mostly freshmen. Most upperclassmen live off campus.

Will someone please rate the on-campus dorms? I put San Jac (1) and Duren (2) but I applied for housing in mid-December so I don’t know if I have any chance at those two. I’m guessing that I’d probably be placed in my bottom three so I’m picking carefully. I really want San Jac though because it’s really clean, bright, and has private bathrooms.

I want a dorm with those traits, kinda in order: Private/connecting bath, quiet, bright(well-lit/big windows), clean, close to nat sci buildings and gregory or recsports, close to a food location

I really don’t want to live in Jester. I’m not quite sure about an all-girls dorm because I want to meet guys too lol but I won’t rule it out. But with those traits (the first ones are more important), which should be my next 3 choices in order?

well i guess the ones who end up in an off campus dorm (Like Me) they might be better off paying a few more bucks for a nice living room, felicities, and a private bathroom

Nxt, I know you’re upset about not having a dorm… I am too… but for us, its best to be positive. Atleast in an off campus dorm, there are no community bathrooms! And you can get apartment style living.

kaygar, this entire thread is about people rating the dorms. Go ahead and read it and if you still have any specific questions someone will be glad to answer them.

how does UT decide how to arrange the people living in Jester? Does the early people in the housing priority list get placed in the bottom floors and work its way up, or is it completely random?

Yeah I’m wondering that too. Because I wouldn’t mind living in one of the newly remodeled rooms in Jester.

Also, my OA “wing leader” or whatever is staying in Moore-hill next year, so it’s not all freshman.

If i’m going to be in Jester, will i be able to put a mattress topper on the pull out bed? Or will it not have enough space to be pushed back in? The topper i want is 2 inches thick.

There will not be enough space to push the bed into the wall if you try to leave the topper flat on top of the bed.

Maybe you can bend the topper or how about if you slide the topper forward a little, so the mattress itself slides into the wall and the topper sticks out over the edge a bit…

hmm… thanks. i think if i get one i’ll just never push the bed in.

Hey Lone Ranger -
Looking back at this thread it looks like you lived at Carothers. If that is correct, can you tell me how many rooms are on each floor? DS just received room assignment for Carothers and it is hard to tell from the website. Any insight or advice about Carothers would be greatly appreciated!

Other than the fact that it is an all male dorm and its far from alot of the campus, is there any reason not to live there?? I mean atmosphere and room wise… I got assigned there and not sure if I should get reassigned…

No, it’s just far away from a lot of things. I don’t think the quality is any worse than the other dorms. I mean, it’s no San Jac or Duren, but it’s not necessarily worse than Jester.

I know there are plans to tear it down and built a new San-Jac style dorm in its place to hold 500+ people. But this is years and years away; they haven’t even designed it yet.

There are about 40 rooms each on the 2nd and 3rd floors in Carothers, less on the 1st floor and in the basement.

loneranger, so… if my room starts with a 0, and I live in Carothers, I’m in the basement? Uh oh. Is that bad? Are there windows?
