@ bibsub: Hi there!
My understanding is that if your roommate is in Honors (and applied early enough to get her preference) you would be allowed to room with her, just fill out the roommate preference part of your Housing (you will both need to do it and have each other’s UT EID and make sure your hall rankings match all the way through). I also understand that for roommates, the earlier housing application takes precedence, so you can’t drag one another down the list, only up.

Everything I have heard is that housing preference is based solely on time of receipt of the $50 housing application (rather than the big deposit amount – I think it was $300?).

I don’t know much about San Jac except that it is new and very nice, but for quiet studious students, the honors quad would be great.

@soadquake981: I think I would call UTHousing and ask for their best guess. It is late, but you never know.

Could anybody give me current information about Scottish Rite Dorm? The comments I saw were from a couple of years ago. Our daughter will be attending UT in the fall (2010). She is not going through rush. Will she fit in @ SRD? Is it too late to apply? She is verysocial in nature but likes a quiet living environment. We are looking at Dobie. People say it is loud - any comments?
Thanks

TinaMarie, I don’t know about currently, but I wasn’t in a sorority when I lived at SRD in the early 80s, and it was fine. Two girls from SRD that I met the very first week became my best friends. It was kind of interesting being around all those sorority girls - I felt like an anthropologist! I was an engineering student and found it plenty quiet. Ask if there’s still a study hall in the attic - it was always dead silent.

Oh, I liked the dorm so much I lived there all four years. The pool was great! :)

Most of the girls, but certainly not all, will be rushing. It is probably too late for SRD, I’ve heard there is a waitlist at this point, but this is only second hand, I don’t know for sure. Most dorms will be loud, many kids study in the library.

You will not definitely be in Jester. You are likely to be in Jester, but there are other possibilities. You might still get one of your choices; maybe this is not that bad of a time to be applying. Or:

If you sign up to room with someone with a really high priority, who paid the deposit early, you will end up in whatever you and your roommate pick as your first choice. The earliest priority is the one they look at.

If you are a guy, you could be put in Simkins; if not, you could possibly be put in Littlefield. Sometimes these two dorms fill up somewhat later than others.

If you are in honors, you could POSSIBLY be put in honors. Sometimes there is space in honors a little later than expected.

If you sign up for a Residential FIG, you’ll be in Whitis or in another nice area; that’s a way to get a nice room even if you signed up late.

If you are “quite late” so you do not get an assigned room, but not “too late” so they don’t ave a room for you, you will be offered “supplemental housing” - that means you live in a converted lounge for a few weeks (up to a semester) until a room opens up for you. If housing offered you a “real” housing contract, that means they aren’t considering people to be in the “quite late” stage yet.

Tinamarie,
My daughter applied to SRD on March 1st. At that time there were 5 spots available. By the time that they got her contract, 3 days later, she was #13 on the waitlist. We were told that only 10 got off the waitlist last year. We decided to withdraw our contract and put a contract in somewhere eles. They did tell us that about 75% of the residents at SRD are greek but that if you are not greek, you will be okay.

Which dorm would you guys recommend for a freshman in business.
Jester, Moore-hill, Prather, Roberts or Breckenridge?
Also, are random roommates usually a good or bad experience?

sorry if this question has been asked a million times, but i applied as a transfer and paid the $50 housing deposit in november-ish. how do they do housing for transfer students? and is it even likely that i will get housing if i am accepted?

That’s interesting, SWTCAT. I’d forgotten that SRD used to have LONG waiting lists. I signed up for the dorm when I was a HS sophomore! My mom had lived there, so that’s where I knew I wanted to be.

I had a question about roomates when you don’t choose anyone, when it comes time to give you, do they just put them based on their room services??
also how do rate the experince of having a random roomate?
how well does the find a roomate application on the UT website work?

I had one, many years ago. She was a sorority girl, always doing weird things like getting a paddle signed by a lot of girls. She also had a serious boyfriend, so she was never in our room. When she did make an appearance, she’d lecture me about never touching her stuff. Then she tried to make me over, when I didn’t feel like I needed to be made over. So my experience wasn’t really too positive, but it could have been worse. I made a close friend right away, though, and she was my roommate the rest of college.

I really thought she’d get a dorm room because she put her deposit in early, but she didn’t - the freshmen took priority. You might get a room on campus, but I think you need a back up plan. (In the thread below, she says she ended up in Dobie and she loves it.)

So I don’t have to make other people around CC mad by asking questions about dorms in other threads —

Is there any info that can be added about Prather Hall?

I like how it looks through the virtual tour and I’ve walked past it before. Someone told me it’s kind of creepy on the inside because it has narrow hallways that in some parts are so ‘‘narrow’’ you have to go sideways to get through? o_O
