The University of Texas Dorms

Just keep your door locked when you are not there.

@ Y2K: The valuables can be anything from jewelry, an expensive watch, wallet to insurance papers, medical information, and/or extra cash.

Anybody could be stealing these things (e.g.- roommate, friend roommate brings in).

And, yes, they could just take the box, but the lockbox/safe…

 1. acts as a deterrent for would-be thiefs.
 2. can be hidden from plain sight.
 3. provides greater security than leaving expensive items and/or money scattered about.

For these reasons, it makes absolute sense to have some sort of method and means for storing and securing valuables.

Idk, I never felt the need to lock anything down. I don’t carry cash and I always keep my wallet on me. Sometimes my roommate forgot to lock the door when he went to class, and we never felt like somebody was going to steal our things.

I would highly suggesting keeping your stuff/valuables always locked in your room. NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOOR UNLOCKED ! Especially if you live in San Jac/Jester/Kinsolving/ Any dorm with 300+ kids.

This person is worried that his roommate will steal his valuables.

that’s a tough way to start a new friendship. How about giving your roomate the benefit of the doubt?

^ Better safe than sorry.

from personal experience, the people you consider your friends can end up being the most likely culprits :/

generalizing, yes. but i’m just speaking from my own experiences.

why would you bring valuables into dorms in the first place?

xtra are you saying laptops aren’t “valuable”?

PS. Anyone staying in Prather?

I’m in Prather! For the second year. It’s a great dorm. I’m in L147, same room as last year.

so someone who’s from new york shouldnt bring their jewelry, gaming consoles with $60 wireless controllers, their video games/movies, their TV, their nice camera, their expensive calculator because theyre in a science based field, etc. and just be bored all the time?

Nice Why Two Kay im 2 floors above ya. Do you know how the hallways are structured in Prather? I stayed in Moore-Hill last year so I haven’t been inside Prather

Say what? This is the sort of thing everyone has in his or her room.

Almost everyone has a nice laptop. Just lock the door when you are not in the room.

lol, that was in response to xtra’s question about why someone would bring valuables into the dorms :P

I agree that it’s a good idea not to bring valuable jewelry.

The K and L sections are just one hallway connected to each other, from floors 0 to 3. Floor 0 has the lobby at the end of the K section. Floors 1-3 each have 7 rooms on each side, so 14 rooms per floor. There are 2 bathrooms, each with 2 showers and 3 sinks (so, more than enough to never get even close to being crowded).

Floors 2-3 connect to the J section at the end of the K section (floor one does not since the lobby is so tall, and the J section sits above the lobby). So, your floor (floor 3 I guess?) will have the K/L section, then like 1 or 2 steps down is the J section at the end of the K section.

That all sounds kinda confusing, but basically there are way way way way way less rooms per hall than in Moore Hill, which I’ve been in. It’s like 1/5 the size of Moore Hill.

Is it pretty quiet in Prather? How many study lounges?

There’s a study lounge on the zero floor near the lobby. It has a few couches and a dozen or so big chairs. There’s two sets of table/chairs. It’s generally considered to be an entirely no talking room, since you can just go to the lobby 15 feet away if you want to work on a group project (many people do their homework in the evening in the lobby). The study lounge has a surprisingly soundproof door, as there is a piano (or, was, it might have been moved) just outside the door that you can barely hear if you are inside the room. I always used this room when I had to read a chapter from a textbook, but I never did any sort of writing or actual “work” in the room, just reading. Plenty of other people would set up their laptop, papers, etc and have a whole study array around them. I just prefered to do my actual typing work in my room. The room really doesn’t have a lot of table space, generally one person takes up a table or two people who are friends can share it. I never had to do any writing on paper my freshman year (no math classes or anything like that) so I just typed anything I needed in my room. Last year the room never really got crowded, there were always at least half the chairs open and plenty of table space for all, plenty of outlets, etc.

Down the hall is a TV lounge with a pool table that people also often do homework in, although it’s harder because there are no tables to work on.

As far as if it’s a quiet dorm… idk really it depends on your definition and your neighbors. The 4 rooms at the end of the hall that I was in all seemed to go to bed around midnight on weeknights, which was great for me since that’s when I wanted to sleep. So it was very quiet there at night. The only downside to being on the first floor is that my window was right near an entrance to a staircase, and people would stand outside talking before going into the dorm, and I would hear that. It wasn’t too bad and only happened very occasionally, and even then it was usually quiet by midnight or for sure by one. But even the 2nd floor said they couldn’t hear them so you should be perfect on the 3rd floor there.

Because of how few rooms are on each floor in the hallways, it tends to be much quieter than Jester because nobody really has to walk down the hall to get to their room, it’s pretty much go up the stairs and your door is right there. So, less foot traffic.

Not to say it’s a boring dorm, last year I would get groups of people to meet in the lobby about 10:30 or so and we’d go out to parties every Fri/Sat night. I’m quite the party goer frat guy, so I like to keep it fun lol.

Has anyone stayed in a single before here? I have a single in the quad this year (im not a freshman) and I was wondering what it would be like. Do the private baths include a sink, toilet, and shower for sure? And do all of the rooms have an ac/heating unit like my room last year did? Thanks!
