Carl Lewis called US men’s 4x100 relay performance a “clown show” akin to “losing 99-0” in the Super Bowl. Apparently, there was not a lot of practice involved… the thinking was just put 6 guys on a relay, and you will get a medal. His words, not mine.
Walking fast is exercise, not an Olympic sport.
Don’t you remember the movie Walk, Don’t Run with Jim Hutton and Cary Grant, race walking through Toyko during the 1964 Olympics?
Sorry, but I’ve not heard of the film before.
Tell me that walking 45 miles in 3 hours and 25 minutes is not athletic. That is just a tad longer than a marathon… of course there are dudes that can run the distance in slightly over 2 hours, but can they walk it as fast as these race walkers? Takes skill.
(The 50k winner’s time was 3:50:08 per posted results).
I also enjoyed the shot put guys! I stumbled onto them after watching a track event and felt immediately homesick for the States when I saw Ryan Houser throwing in a baseball cap. We live in Tokyo, and we’ve mostly just been dropping in and out of the coverage when we have time. I found some wonderful events I would never have planned to watch. There is drama everywhere in sports! Looking forward to the team equestrian jumping tonight (my time) - the course for the individual jumping was a riot, with samurai and sumo wrestlers, a jump made out of chopsticks, etc. I wish Japan had shown some of that whimsicality in the opening ceremony!
I heard that the sumo wrestler spooked some horses, lol!
The new to Olympics events were quite enjoyable to watch, as well as some old favorites!
OMG The Chinese 14 yo diver is amazing. All 10s three times in a row!
Just saw her! Amazing and I love that her coach team gave her oodles of praise.
And she couldn’t have competed if the Olympics hadn’t been postponed because she would have been too young!
OMG I almost died watching the qualifying 4x400 relay heats. Way to go US ladies. Great relay, strategy, exchanges, and all.
Yes, the Chinese 14 yr old diver is amazing. I hope she will dive at the next Games… as commentators said, Chinese female divers rarely perform in more than one Olympics.
Agreed. Really strong.
Men’s 1500 semifinals! That race requires a lot of strategy and endurance. Bummer. Big bummer for Centrowitz.
Rarely, not never. Shi Tingmao won 2 golds in Tokyo to match her 2 golds from Rio. And she’s the ripe old age of 29. Quan Hongchan will be in Paris in 3 years.
Let’s hope so!
The next summer Olympics may be a scant 3 years away, so folks shouldn’t age as much as usual.
Watching the women’s beach volleyball finals live. I love watching volleyball! Go USA!
I will call it a sport. Maybe not an Olympic sport in the way skateboarding is an Olympic sport.
Watching beach volleyball. 129 on the sand? I don’t see any sort of equipment to help cool the athletes. Is this the usual August conditions inside this stadium? I hope nobody suffers heat injury.
